To book a short break at a holiday camp 5 miles away?

Sun holiday thing.

Friday to Monday, 2 adults, 1 child and a dog £80. I think it is genius - if we need anything I can just pop home and get it, and I can sort the cat out each day.

Dh has reacted as if I've bought a short break to Grays Beach or something. Says we can't do it because everyone will laugh at us Ie his best mate Prick

And I can drop dd off at school Monday morning and get the full three nights (it is term time)

So, Aibu to think this is a very good idea, or is it, as dh says, just a bit weird?

Brian that's exactly my thinking. If we went further afield we would need to have Friday off work, and leave Sunday afternoon.

One of the holidays our DC remember and talk about most was two nights six miles from home. We camped, they played in the paddling pool, we ate chips and ice cream, and went to a toy shop.

If it feels like a holiday it doesn't matter if it's halfway round the world or just down the road.

AsTimeGoesBy · 28/08/2015 22:14

We go camping to a site less than 10 miles away purely because we love camping and it means you can get a weekend away even if a DC has a party to go to or you can't get anyone to feed the cat at short notice etc. Go for it.

Obviously it's great if everyone loves the idea but your DH doesn't and I don't blame him. It's nice to get away and see new places but if I'm near home I would rather stay in my house than in a shabby static caravan.

BrianButterfield · 28/08/2015 23:12

I know the entertainment is shite but DH and we don't have family nearby and nobody really to babysit so we don't get many nights out - just to be able to take the kids out and have a couple of drinks in a family friendly environment is fun for us, it's cheesy but it's still out at least. Walk back with sleepy kids in the dark and sling them in bed...it's all good.

Summerisle1 · 28/08/2015 23:28

Makes complete sense to me! Your DH's friend needs his head read (as my grandmother used to say).

Last year, ds2, ddil and the dgds had a Sun holiday at a camp a few miles down the coast from us. Camp wasn't exactly 5* but they didn't care because they hadn't travelled halfway across country or taken time off work. So they had 3 days of lounging on the beach, enjoying the various activities on hand and taking in the cheesy entertainment at night. ds2 said it was one of the best holidays they'd had!

we went on a barge holiday about 2 miles away from home, and saw a totally different side of our local area. It was well worth it.

Fatmomma99 · 29/08/2015 01:15

Another one here saying "go for it" CatThiefKeith F

p.s. is your DH's friend otherwise known as "prick", because if so, even more reason to do it!

Louise43210 · 29/08/2015 01:32

Good thing about being away from home is getting away from all those house repairs. If you stay at home you rarely relax.

CarlaJones · 29/08/2015 01:50

Sounds like a great idea!

SilverNightFairy · 29/08/2015 01:51

We did a spur of the moment camping thing with friends just 15 minutes away. We had a lovely time. We were all sat around the campfire with beer and wine by 6 pm Friday. The children were off chasing fireflies and playing hide and seek. It was a relaxed, blissful weekend..and when the skies opened Sunday afternoon, we piled into the car for a very short trip home.

CatThiefKeith · 29/08/2015 19:34

Oh Ffs. I posted something on FB about booking this last night, and now mil has booked it, and so has my NDN! I really need to stop over sharing. Sad

Have you actually booked then or will you not bother now?

The only thing that I would find odd would be having to go home everyday.

Spilose · 29/08/2015 19:50

Go. My mum took me to a bnb for a little holiday at our local seasidey town. Only about 9-10 miles away and I loved it! We couldn't afford anything more and never went to the seaside otherwise

gamerwidow · 29/08/2015 19:55

We did the same last year. Cheap sun break to All Hallows' 20 mins down the a2. We all loved it Smile

PaulAnkaTheDog · 29/08/2015 19:57

Our caravan storage is 30 minutes away, ajoined to a campsite. We frequently go through for the weekend. A 'holiday' to ds and a breather from city life for us. Go for it! Grin

partialderivative · 29/08/2015 19:58

Sounds great to me, go for it

Iamaslummymummy · 29/08/2015 20:01

All hallows? We are going to do the same!

Rachel0Greep · 29/08/2015 20:10

I'd do it. I've sometimes considered just booking the two of us into a fairly local hotel, for a night away. It's less than 20 miles away, but is really nice.

CatThiefKeith · 29/08/2015 20:15

Blimey looks like it's a mn meet up then!

Yeah all booked. 6th May, who's in? Grin

CatThiefKeith · 29/08/2015 20:16

Yes to Allhallows btw :)

I took the kids camping to a site 20 minutes away. I came home midweek for a decent shower and to shove some clothes in the washing machine.

RockerMummy184 · 29/08/2015 20:23

Our family used to go camping to a site about 10 mins drive from our house when we were little. We loved it!
My dad would sometimes take a detour or drive a longer route there so we thought we were going somewhere more exotic. Grin
