to ask you if I'm nuts for trying to drive this far in one day?

So I need to get to Cornwall and back in one day to pick someone up. It's a 3hr drive on a good day so that's 6+ hours plus traffic and breaks whenever I feel knackered/need a coffee and a leg stretch. I plan on leaving very early AM to avoid rush hour traffic (it'll be midweek at least) and coming back either midday or after the evening rush hour traffic (partly just so I can gather myself a bit before doing the return journey too)!

I've driven there one way and it's fine with breaks etc...

Grin. Fantastic! What a confidence boost for a new driver!

TheOrchardKeeper · 25/08/2015 21:01

It has made me feel even more confident. Not over confident though! Grin makes town/local driving look easy peasy!

Ach no. I've done central Scotland-London many a time, including with twin babies in the back and once in a Transit containing all my worldly goods! The only thing that will break you is London if that's where you're returning to Grin

Well done op Smile

You did brilliantly ! 7 hours in rain is tiring. And having only passed your test 2 months ago is quite a drip feed Grin.

Long drives are not my favourite : London to Cumbria stretches my limit.

TheOrchardKeeper · 26/08/2015 06:50

Thank you. I spent a year learning to drive though and made sure I drove everywhere the first few weeks just to make it feel really automatic. So it doesn't count Wink

Slept for England though! Everytime I shut my eyes all I saw was a motorway haha.

No problem, I regulatly drive 6-7 hours a day with work, and that's a short day! Take a pillow & blanket, in case your tired, you can stop in a service station and take a 20-30 minute nap if needs be, works wonders. Regular breaks, every 2 hours, BEFORE you start feeling tired, for at least 15 minutes, get out of the car, walk about, get fresh air.

Take a min 2 hour break at your destination before heading back.

I like to take an audio book on my phone and listen to it in the car, makes the hours whizz by!

You'll be fine!

Well I'm now off to drive to Reading Festival in the rain which will seem like a total doddle compared to yesterday Smile

(And considering the weather IABU to go at all Grin ).

Easily done - just make sure you do have breaks when you need them. I've done Portsmouth to Macclesfield via Northampton and back in a day. Regularly used to go from Portsmouth to Cardiagan and back in a day.

ShortandSweeter · 26/08/2015 12:32

I used to average 50,000 miles a year and would do this kind of thing quite regularly but if you're not sure, then do it in 2 days.

My grandparents lived in the middle of france and we always drove there in one day, about 8 hours driving from london broken up by the half hour euro tunnel. Its fine, boting but fine.

FrenchJunebug · 26/08/2015 13:54

I drove from London to the East of France (14h) with a toddler. It's fine. Take regular breaks.
