to ask you if I'm nuts for trying to drive this far in one day?

So I need to get to Cornwall and back in one day to pick someone up. It's a 3hr drive on a good day so that's 6+ hours plus traffic and breaks whenever I feel knackered/need a coffee and a leg stretch. I plan on leaving very early AM to avoid rush hour traffic (it'll be midweek at least) and coming back either midday or after the evening rush hour traffic (partly just so I can gather myself a bit before doing the return journey too)!

I've driven there one way and it's fine with breaks etc...

I think you'll be fine but two things to note:

You may not be able to sleep well that evening/night
You will probably be shattered the following day!

Ratarse · 23/08/2015 20:53

Manchester to Edinburgh then back again in a day. For a day out.

Manchester to Luxembourg in a day.

GrinAndTonic · 23/08/2015 20:57

I'm driving from current residence to old one on Wednesday. It's 900km and will take about 10 hours or so.

When I lived in England I often drove from London to Frankfurt in one go.

Six hours is nothing. You'll be fine.

Advice noted Smile

It's an old micra but I find it comfortable enough!

That's an easy drive :)

I drove 8hrs in one go on Thursday.

Piffpaffpoff · 23/08/2015 21:06

I'd do that no bother In the winter I often do a 5hr round trip to go skiing at Zcairngorm and, if I'm honest, the journey is part of the fun of the trip because I don't often get time in the car to myself to listen to whatever I want to or just drive in peace.

It is surprising, though, the number of people IRL who wring their hands in concern and say 'do you not mind going that far alone??" Mind? MIND?? I bloody love it!!

D0G · 23/08/2015 21:10

That's a piece of piss. We regularly drive from the bottom up to Plymouth for hospital spots, that's a good 2/2.5 hours each way. Just don't go on a Friday or Monday or traffic will be terrible. Also the motorway finishes in Exeter and then it's A30 all the way down depending on where you're going.

Blu · 23/08/2015 21:14

You'll be fine Smile

Don't stay up late the night before, stop for a coffee, have healthy snacks and don't let your blood sugar get low, drink water, relax and get on with it.

Stretch your legs and have a brisk walk and fresh air before the return journey.

Unless you are a new or inexperienced driver this sort of journey is pretty standard.

TheOrchardKeeper · 23/08/2015 21:17

Thanks dog

Exactly! I love to drive alone but my DM thinks it's crazy. But then I'm not a nervous driver! I'm not stopping overnight if I can help it!

I do that sort of driving hours pretty regularly. We'll drive 3-4 hours, compete all day, then drive home.

I regularly drive Melbourne to Sydney in a day (about 11 hours from my house to where I stay, but that is including quite a few breaks for the dogs to stretch their legs). I do Melbourne to Brisbane (22 hours) over two days. I also used to do a lot of trips that were get in the car at 3am on Saturday morning, drive 9 hours, compete all afternoon and evening, compete all Sunday morning, back in the car at 3pm, drive 9 hours home, then be back at work on Monday morning.

If you're a confident driver, used to driving decent distances, then you should have no problems at all.

LittleLionMansMummy · 23/08/2015 23:34

We live in East Anglia region. Dh has had to go to Durham (3 hours there, 3 back) and Devon (4 hours on a good run) for the day for meetings.

MicrochipsAndMemories · 23/08/2015 23:38

easily doable. We go visit family for the day who are a 2.5 hour drive away.
I once drove from Leeds to Cornwall and back in a day though so I might be slightly crazy.

GrinAndTonic · 24/08/2015 00:57

It always makes me grin a little when I hear people discussing driving a long distance. The trip I am doing on Wednesday (Blackwater to Brisbane for those who live in Australia) will be an inland trip involving postential hazards such as kangaroos, emus, camels, cows, horses, foxes, mar bits, wild dogs, boars and overtaking baby boomers driving caravans 20km under the speed limit and long road trains (trucks/lorries over 53m long).

TheExMotherInLaw · 24/08/2015 02:04

It sounds quite do-able, and lots of people have given good advice.
Can I add to ensure you take a duvet or sleeping bag, pillow & change of clothes, overnight stuff with you. Then if you get a bit tired, you can stop for a power nap, or if there is a major delay, you can cope if you absolutely have to stay overnight somewhere.

NobodyLivesHere · 24/08/2015 02:07

perfectly doable. i once drove to scotland and back in one day (i live in south wales). i was knackered, but i did it!

carrielou2007 · 24/08/2015 07:21

I'll give you a wave, driving from Somerset to Cornwall at lunchtime ????

icklekid · 24/08/2015 07:24

Having just got back from Cornwall avoid the a30 as over 90mins due to roadworks for a section that took us 15 to come back along...nightmare!

SWFARMER · 24/08/2015 07:38

That's nothing. I drive from Bristol to Newcastle and back. It was a 9 hour round trip! You'll be fine. Just stop plenty of times x

differentnameforthis · 24/08/2015 08:35

Easy to do it in one day.

We drove to Melbourne in one day, and that took 10 hours. When I say we, I think I drove for about an hr.

Plenty of breaks, and make sure you aren't tired.

fakenamefornow · 24/08/2015 08:37

It's all getting very competitive isn't it op! I'm just debating whether I can do a 13.5 hour (assuming easy traffic) drive in one day.

When I was a teenager I once drove 800 miles in the wrong direction! Can anyone beat that?

TheOrchardKeeper · 24/08/2015 08:43

Thanks for the tip about the traffic! I'll avoid that route then!

I feel silly now for even asking Grin

OP posts:
fakenamefornow · 24/08/2015 08:43

Oh that 13.5 hour drive will be with three children fighting in the back.

My wrong turn was driving from Kansas to California, I ended up in Texas.

Runningupthathill82 · 24/08/2015 10:24

Totally do-able...Like others, am surprised you're even considering it's not! I

TheReluctantCountess · 24/08/2015 10:27

That's ok, as long as you take breaks when you need to.
I often drive to London and back in a day to see my parents, and it's four hours each way. I enjoy driving by myself. Decent CD, bag of Jelly Babies and a coffee in the car - bliss.

TheOrchardKeeper · 25/08/2015 20:26

I did it Grin Only passed my test two months ago so it was a biggy for me, though I'm not a nervous driver!

Overall 7hrs of driving, mostly on the motorway in the pissing rain and I'm still here (and ready for bed!!! Brew ).

Thanks for the advice Smile
