Hull trains cancelled, 3 trains' worth of passengers on one train

xavierfondue · 21/08/2015 17:02

DD (age 17) and her boyfriend (also 17) are trying to get to Edinburgh today to go to the festival. I dropped them off at the station with pre-booked tickets and she is sending me all these messages that:

a) the train is packed
b) they only just managed to get on
c) the passengers already on the train tried to stop them getting on [but fortunately they (surprisingly, where did this come from? I always thought they were so polite) threw a complete strop and barged their way on, probably rudely and aggressively but I'm actually quite proud of them]
d) No reservations on the train, so they were split up and had to stand in different places - the seats I'd booked were completely invalid
e) Only got seats (not together) at York
f) Apparently, as the title states, there are three trains' worth of passengers on one train.

HTF did this happen?

The kids were talking last night about going to Japan for a month next summer, after leaving school. I was all for saying no, you're too young, but after this I think I should let them go.

AIBU to think Virgin Trains are completely useless after they took over East Coast Trains? There are always delays (DH uses it everyday) and this is a bloody joke.

And to cap it all, Mumsnet only sent me my email on WEDNESDAY to say my account had been hacked. I only picked it up today.

Gin. Where is the bloody emocion for gin? Stuff the Wine

Is it just salt with colouring in it? I'm yet to be swayed.

What's wrong with just salt and malt vinegar?

BoffinMum · 21/08/2015 21:04

Do not, repeat do not mess wiv da Boff. Grin

Moln · 21/08/2015 21:06

How are the Japanese restaurants in Hull? Anyone know?

LemonPied · 21/08/2015 21:12

There's a decent Thai place. Maybe op's daughter should try the trains in Thailand.

VivaLeBeaver · 21/08/2015 21:32

Chip spice isn't coloured salt. It's spicey, kind of tomato and paprika.

ouryve · 21/08/2015 21:39

This sort of thing has happened for decades when trains are cancelled. Have not fond memories of anything goes bank holidays when half the trains were cancelled due to line works and the rest were delayed. You found a gap and squeezed into it. Bob help you if you needed the loo.

ouryve · 21/08/2015 21:44

Despite spending half my childhood in Hull, I've never had chip spice. I had such a sheltered childhood.

Penfold007 · 21/08/2015 21:51

All hail the mighty Boff Wine

LoveVintage · 21/08/2015 21:52

DH and I have a saying 'been to Hull and back' after we were driving down south years ago and inexplicably ended up in the middle of Hull and could not find our way out.

FireflyGirl · 21/08/2015 23:04

That's impressive Love - there's pretty much only one way in and out! It's also at the end of the motorway, so pretty hard to hit by accident. You must share my sense of direction!

As far as I know, there are no Japanese restaurants in Hull. Or Scottish ones.

I was born and raised in Hull and was mystified when I got takeaway in Manchester and the chips were plain. Why would you eat them like that?!? Confused

CanadianJohn · 21/08/2015 23:22

I went to Hull once visiting Brian.

xavierfondue · 21/08/2015 23:23

Hello, OP here.

I've been to Nice and the Isles of Greece and I've sipped champagne on a yacht. I moved like Harlow in Monte Carlow and showed 'em what I've got. I've been undressed by Kings and seen some things that a woman won't call dull.

I've been to paradise. But I've never been to Hull.

BoffinMum · 21/08/2015 23:25

Ahem

My grandmother was born in Hull.

I am therefore part Hull (the mighty part, presumably).

Now where are these chips of which you speak?

xavierfondue · 21/08/2015 23:26

In case yo u were worried, i've had a lovey time.

Oh good you got to Hull after all.

Starlingsintheslipstream · 21/08/2015 23:29

I visited Hull earlier in the year and quite liked it. Home of The Housemartins of course, going to be City of Culture in 2017. We ate at The Deep, was fab! Also seemed to have shedloads of pubs but sadly we had 3 kids in tow so didn't partake.

G1veMeStrength · 21/08/2015 23:36

What a hullabaloo! But a crappy train ride isn't the end of the world, why japanic?

Happy Anniversary Wine

YouTheCat · 21/08/2015 23:39

I was going to be travelling either this weekend or next on the East Coast mainline. So glad I decided not to because they were talking about strikes on other networks a few weeks ago and I had an inkling it would be chaos.

xavierfondue · 21/08/2015 23:40

Thank you.44

About Japan. Last night DD#s boyfriend said he was going to Japan next summer after his a levels. i said who with/ he said hopefuly (daught'ers name). im' suprised she hasn't mentioned it he said.

i'm surprised too. they've never been to bognor together .et alone hull. but today they are going to edinburgh and had to fight onto the train. enayway enuough of that.

so tey'll only be 1 8 next summer and japan is a very long way away but i spoke to dh about it ton ight and he said it was a great idea which i'm suprised about as how is she going to pay for it? she's been saving up so has some money in the bank but she want to s go to uni in london so she'll wizz through the money then on rent etc. anuway, that's wahy japan.

am a bit pissed.

I find it very hard to get upset that two 17 year olds had to stand for a while on a train.

xavierfondue · 22/08/2015 00:38

you've missed the point midnite. i'm upset that people TRIED TO PREVENT THEM FROM GETTING ON THE TRAIN, despite having valid tickets for that train.

I'll repeat this.

PEOPLE WHO CRASHED ONTO THIS TRAIN WERE TRYING TO STOP THEM GETTING ON THE TRAIN EVEN THOUGH THEY HAD TICKETS FOR THIS TRAIN.

MidniteScribbler · 22/08/2015 00:55

Oh stop screaming. You sound hysterical. They are not children. Some people were arseholes, they dealt with it. They got on the bloody train! Get over it.

elfycat · 22/08/2015 01:01

Didn't Brian come from Hull?

I'd go to Hull if I were you OP A yoni massage might be just the thing to calm you.

Sunsoo · 22/08/2015 01:03

How are the Hull restaurants in Japan?

ftangftangolebiscuitbarrel · 22/08/2015 01:05

Go to bed Midnite. You sound uptight and sneery. Get over yourself.
