to think this is a ^ridiculous^ list of meals

Suggested guardian healthy week's menu.
I mean, evidently some of the suggestions are perfectly sensible (porridge with banana), and individually, there's nothing daft about any given recipe. But taken as a whole, could anyone design a more cliched guardian-reader-menu . . . Where do you even buy tilapia . . . ?

Completely agree that this is way less than 2,000 a day. I eat way more than this and have been the same weight for ages (not overweight, a bit more than 10 stone at 5'8''). I'd lose weight if I are the menu described. This is actually quite irresponsible - it's just going to make people who are trying to lose weight unrealistic expectations and make them feel bad.

I also thought that was nowhere near 2000 calories. I was eating 1200 a day earlier this year and I'm not sure it even looks like 1200.

Ginslinger: in the case of many processed food you are right. Lots of low fat ready meals, biscuits and flavoured yogurts are full of sugar in place of fat. But in natural unsweetened yogurts and skimmed milk , for example, they just take the fat out and add nothing .

Sounds nice to me, similar to what we eat, though we have porridge and fruit every morning. I do add crisps and wine tho!

I think I'm just too old Grin - it's all just a bit alien to me. But fair play on them, sounds like I'm out of touch.

Now remembering neighbouring allotment holder when I got my first plot in my 20s looking dubiously at my strange newfangled vegetables - I've obviously reached that point myself.

Ironically, I had heard of tilapia before, but only as a 'magic fish to save the world grown in permaculture ponds'. I hadn't realised it had reached the real world! (Maybe I should also confess at this point that I don't actually ever shop in any supermarket other than the little co-op which doesn't run to things like fish counters.)

What I also want to know is if: "2000 calories is a breakfast of toast or cereal, a lunch of a sandwich and zero calorie drink and a dinner of protein, vegetables and a carbohydrate such as boiled potatos"

and looking at various calorie counting sites which reckon I need around 2000 or so cals per day . . . I eat a fuck of a lot more than that and I def. don't gain weight Confused

Looks pretty good to me - not a huge lentil fan and have no idea who could be arsed to slice brazil nuts Confused but otherwise looks doable and tasty.

Particularly like the dinners that double up as the following day's lunch.

Not sure what is so strange about it to most of you?

I'm vegetarian so obviously don't have the fish, meat etc. but otherwise I eat pretty much just like that with most meals based around vegetables and protein.

I mean our as in my, not speaking for other posters! On the whole we aim to cook enough for two nights, rather than using up leftovers as lunch. If we do have leftovers for lunch it's generally something like extra boiled spuds to have fried with an egg and baked beans.

I guess for me I just can't imagine the kind of lifestyle where I drag myself out of bed in the morning and the thing i decide to put together for breakfast involves toasting bread, opening. a packet of smoked salmon, preparing an avocado, and scrambling eggs. That's I-desperately-want-to-impress/shag/impress-AND-shag-this-person levels of breakfasting.

That much lentil and sweet potato will turn you orange.

Def not 2000 cals.

Tilapia is a bit woolly and tasteless imo.

Smoked salmon costs a fortune. Fine as an occasional treat, but I'm sure most people could not afford it on as regular a basis as this menu implies.

Looks disgusting to me, but then I hate both fish and lentils.

They must be full of calories though, as I eat a lot more than that of other things and still weigh 8st...

River cobbler is nicer and dead cheap.

I want to know what they're doing with the REST of their ingredients. The remainder of the packet of parma ham; the lion's share of the tub of creme fraiche, the other half of the banana.

Realhuman spinach cheese omelette and chips and tea is the breakfast you are thinking of and no need to worry about calories Grin
