AIBU to cancel because of nits?

I was planning on taking my toddler to visit some friends this weekend. They have multiple school age children, who are charming, affectionate to the toddler, and huggy. Their mum has just announced on Facebook that they have nits, which are now being treated.

AIBU to cancel? DS has already picked so many bugs up from nursery, and I really want to avoid nits as long as possible. Not least because DS has longish hair and there is no way I could easily treat him without sitting on him.

AIBU?

Yabu because she is treating them.

MrsLeighHalfpenny · 19/08/2015 13:44

Yes. YABU. It's nits for christ's sake, not some deadly disease. Get him to wear a hat, or tie his hair back. The nits will probably be gone by the w/e anyway.

FernsNotAHappyGully · 19/08/2015 13:44

Yes yabu.

Theimpossiblegirl · 19/08/2015 13:48

YABU, be glad you have a friend that lets everyone know and treats.

howabout · 19/08/2015 13:53

YABU but in a completely understandable way.

I do understand as we had a persistent problem and it took a while for me to join the dots to a family the dc used to meet just before each outbreak. They were obviously not treating theirs.
However your friend has announced them so she is definitely treating them. If she does a proper comb through with conditioner a couple of times or uses a treatment and a comb through they will be gone before you arrive. It is only fully grown ones that transfer head to head.
Always obvious when boys have nits as the playground Mums all invest in crewcuts. However I have 3 DD with long hair and can reassure that this is an overreaction and also doesn't work unless they comb out the critters who cling to even the shortest hair. Nitty Gritty comb and conditioner is very effective. Also they don't like Vosene or tea tree products if you wanted a just in case.

flanjabelle · 19/08/2015 13:54

Yanbu I would do the same.

fakenamefornow · 19/08/2015 13:58

YABU

I think this sort of family are the least likely to spread the things. She announced on fb and is treating them. I think your safe.

fakenamefornow · 19/08/2015 13:59

Oh do not comb and conditioner afterwards though.

I'd have had to cancel every single thing this summer then. DD1 brought them home from school a week before the end of term and kindly shared with DD2 and myself all with long hair. I've wet-combed, tea-tree'd, oiled hair, changed pillows etc. Also napalmed them twice now and fingers crossed we got them on the last chemical treatment. Will be wet-combing later to check.

Today I have washed all bedding, washed the car-seat covers, washed all coats etc. Soft toys have been bagged and put away for days. Hairbrushes are washed in scalding hot water daily.

Guests have been offered Hedrin. You could get a bottle of the preventer type products if you are fearful. But really they're just an unpleasant nuisance and not the end of the world.

campervan67 · 19/08/2015 14:11

YABU! If they are being treated now it will ne fine. Also, if he does get them it's not the end of the world, it doesn't take long to treat. Nit treatments these days have come a long way from the foul smelling hideous stuff my mum used to use!

HaydeeofMonteCristo · 19/08/2015 14:18

I cancelled a play date for nits last summer even though the mum was treating them. We had a christening planned on the upcoming weekend and really didn't want to risk giving our guests nits!

CalmYourselfTubbs · 19/08/2015 14:41

YANBU.
only because i catch everything going. except men and money.

i would cancel.

travellinglighter · 19/08/2015 15:21

It’s nits not bubonic plague and being treated. Our kids were forever coming home with them when they were younger. I’ve been treated half a dozen times as well.

happymummyone · 19/08/2015 15:27

To be honest, I wouldn't care if I was BU about this, until she posted on Facebook that her kids were now clear I wouldn't go. I would try to come up with an excuse that didn't hurt her feelings but no, I'd swerve.

MyFriendsCallMeOh · 19/08/2015 16:00

YABU, although I would probably spray my kids with headlice prevention spray before they went, I usually do this when we have a headlice letter home from school, just in case.....

MammaTJ · 19/08/2015 16:46

What an over reaction on your part. You know when your DC goes to school there will be at least on child in the class who will not bother to treat, don't you?

Will you keep your DC home from school every time you get a nit alert letter?

SideOrderofChips · 19/08/2015 17:31

Its nits. Stop being precious. At least shes treating them.

StampyMum · 19/08/2015 17:53

I wouldn't go either - nits freak me out - we've never had them in the house and am hoping to keep it that way.

MyFriendsCallMeOh · 19/08/2015 18:29

And if she's just treated them, they're less likely to pass nits to your kids than any other play date......

Eternalsunshines · 19/08/2015 18:34

I would cancel, nits give me the hebie jeebies

Hairyspiderinyourunderwear · 19/08/2015 19:38

I would cancel. My kids got nits from someone who was treating their kids when they went over for the morning (they didn't tell us). It took several weeks to get fully rid of them and was expensive, messy and a pain in the neck.

Lice aren't the end of the world but neither is rescheduling.

Hairyspiderinyourunderwear · 19/08/2015 19:40

Also when kids are at school they are more mature and it is easier to treat them than a squirrely toddler who won't sit nicely while you comb their hair.

derxa · 19/08/2015 20:21

Get him to wear a hat Smile

Applesplease · 19/08/2015 20:26

All those saying YABU have clearly never spend 21 days straight combing their DD's waist length hair to free her from nits.

YANBU!

Trumpette · 19/08/2015 20:35

YANBU you will not enjoy it as you will be worrying (and watching) their interactions the whole while now you know they have/are being treated for nits!
