As a couple they are starting to grate.

Is it too early to focus on them?

YABU not to list your reasons as to why you feel this way.

Buxhoeveden · 17/08/2015 07:33

I suppose the question is what is it legitimate to base one's views about the Monarchy ON?

I'd quite like to get off the fence.

Ignore them?

What is it exactly that they have done that is so bad?
I mean, being a rescue pilot for free... How awful of him!

Buxhoeveden · 17/08/2015 07:35

That's quite extreme biscuit deployment Trees Smile

Egotistich...

sleepyhead · 17/08/2015 07:36

The whole point of a monarchy is that you get what you're given and have absolutely no say in the matter.

So yanbu to have realised that the whole thing is completely ridiculous, but yabu if you think the monarchy would be fine if the Wales' would just stop going on so many holidays.

dangerrabbit · 17/08/2015 07:36

Why? I'm no monarchist, but why the Cambridges and not eg Prince Andrew as a legitimate reason for your complaints about the royal family?

milliemanzi · 17/08/2015 07:39

They should all fuck off

londonrach · 17/08/2015 07:39

Im edging the other way. Didnt really care if we had a monarchy when younger but with the cambridges can see its a good tourist attraction and now think its a good thing for the uk. The Cambridges are certainly better than charles who i dont really like. He seems abit strange. Is this a sign of getting older that you still to like the monarchy?

limitedperiodonly · 17/08/2015 07:39

Andrew and his offspring are much worse. They're not even nice to look at.

Buxhoeveden · 17/08/2015 07:40

I don't think he does that job 'for free' Binary.

I just find them irritating and slightly work-adverse and a touch entitled in MN parlance. So, it's quite a mild aversion in the great scheme of things, but they will eventually be Heads of State (Or he will ??)

But that's not really my question. The question is should I let my minor irritation with a couple two steps from the throne influence my feelings about the Monarchy as a whole? Or AIBU? I'm just musing, really.

I agree with pps, what's wrong with the Cambridges? Charles, yes I can see why you'd take against him. Andrew, God yes. But the Cambridges seem entirely inoffensive although the tabloid coverage is somewhat emetic.

mummytime · 17/08/2015 07:44

YABU - they are among the best of the bunch (Anne of Course is fab).

Umm also don't confuse UK (and Ireland's President) as "Head of State" with something like the US President as "Head of State".

EponasWildDaughter · 17/08/2015 07:45

I don't think there's anything wrong or unusual with something or someone becoming a catalyst for your opinions to change.

As i've gone through life my opinions on some things have changed massively. Thank god! It's part of growing up.

YANBU IMO.

Buxhoeveden · 17/08/2015 07:45

Ah but Andrew and his offspring aren't going to be Monarchs. And they won't cost so much. And at least when they aren't holidaying they do work full-time.

Most importantly they don't whinge all the time.

PunkrockerGirl · 17/08/2015 07:47

I've often wondered that, london Smile I was very against them in my youth, but have a certain fondness for them now!

limitedperiodonly · 17/08/2015 07:48

a touch entitled in MN parlance

Of course they're entitled. He's going to King one day and she's going to be Queen and they've done nothing to deserve it...

They don't seem to be as grabby as Charles. But Fergie is still streets ahead of all of them and she's not even royal any more.

God, I hate those stupid words entitled and grabby.

BertrandRussell · 17/08/2015 07:48

"YABU - they are among the best of the bunch (Anne of Course is fab)."

What form does this fabness take?

YouBastardSockBalls · 17/08/2015 07:50

Whinge?? What are the Cambridges 'whinging' about?

If it's about the paparazzi hiding in bushes to photograph Prince George, allowing a mother no private time playing with her own children, then yes, YABVU.

CloserToFiftyThanTwenty · 17/08/2015 07:50

Arf at Andrew et all working full time and not costing us much!

What is the constant whinging you're annoying about?

Buxhoeveden · 17/08/2015 07:52

I meant attitude of entitlement, in the MN sense, of course, Limited. William does seem a touch spoilt.

London and Punk

Maybe I've been through the mid-life softening towards them and am suffering from something post-that.

OP posts:
VirginiaTonic · 17/08/2015 07:52

You need to base your opinions on the 'Monarchy as a principle', no point basing it on any individual personality as they are constantly changing.

And for the record, I think the current Royal Family aren't half bad. The key figures of the queen, and Prince Phillip have been great advocates for Britain. Charles is great in my book, I wish we could give him more power, he has opinions and morals. I don't think William has fully come into his own yet, but by the time he's king he will (as it will probably be years yet).

EponasWildDaughter · 17/08/2015 07:55

I can't put together a clever argument against the monarchy, but as i've got older i've started to really question how much money (from the state) one family needs, just because of who they're descended from.

In the past i don't think i've given much thought to the monarchy or taken much notice of them in the media. The Cambridges have caught my attention and i am now thinking ... basically ... who the heck are they and why do they deserve so much of our cash?

ElkeDagMeisje · 17/08/2015 07:59

Sorry, posted too soon. I meant your phraseology makes you come across as very egotistic.

I think YABU to place such importance on your own rather weakly formed opinions. Its such a multi-faced issue that affects many people and industries.

From one perspective, I've been speaking to someone in China who works for some Chinese board for mediating with foreign companies exploiting Chinese markets. And apparently the British Royal market is massive in China. They are incredibly popular, particularly since Kate and William revitalised it. Apparently the other European Royals don't do it for them at all as they are seen as boring/elitist. Furthermore, the Chinese mediator has met several of the Royal family on trade visits to China. China is a massive market and she tells me Royal related merchandise is incredibly popular and a great export market for British companies. It also offers the British markets a pathway into China that companies from other countries simply don't have.
