To be edging towards an anti-Monarchy position purely because of the Cambridges?

As a couple they are starting to grate.

Is it too early to focus on them?

Please forgive my ignorance but last night I watched a documentary on queen Victoria and Prince Albert. It said about how much they did to help housing, Working conditions and so on. Does the royal family not have as much power anymore?

I have nothing against the royal family and know they do lots of charity work and visits but what else do they do? I don't mean William working and that its just apart from cutting a few ribbons and bringing tourists to the UK what do they do?

Ubik1 · 17/08/2015 08:04

I thought the paparazzi complaints were ridiculous. They've positioned them in a certain way, mainly to win the approval of the public, they've offered the child up fit photoshoots and Hello magazine, create a market around them and are then concerned when the world's media are interested.

What is the monarchy for? In the Cambridge world it appears to be living in luxury and going the occasional photoshoot. Paparazzi intrusion is the downside of choosing to live that way.

god op, your turn of phrase is annoying

you're not an up your own arse journo, are you? Hmm

Buxhoeveden · 17/08/2015 08:05

Elke Grin

This is AIBU not a policy document or a market analysis Grin

I was really pondering my personal preference, but thinking more broadly, I'd be more concerned about value and service to the British taxpayer rather than Chinese concerns.

Lolly I believe the Wales brothers main philanthropic concerns are protecting African wildlife.

I believe that William donates his post-tax salary to charity?

BertrandRussell · 17/08/2015 08:10

One does rather hope his salary is pro rata.........

The whole concept is ridiculous in this day and age. Generation after generation after generation of unelected elitisim when there are children living in poverty. Makes me a bit sick. Bloody duchy and duchess, lords and ladies, princes and princesses. Whixh is why I have become a member of Republic.org.uk. lots of mythbusting there if you think that the 'royals' bring lots of money into the country or whatever bulls**t people may belive with regards to the biggest bunch of in plain sight benefit scroungers.

Buxhoeveden · 17/08/2015 08:16

Virginia is quite right;

You need to base your opinions on the 'Monarchy as a principle', no point basing it on any individual personality as they are constantly changing.

But it doesn't feel like that.

I quite like HMQ and Charles.

StitchingMoss · 17/08/2015 08:21

But the principle of hereditary power and privilege is a nonsense OP. Whether you like the individuals or not is irrelevant - no one should be handed that life on an accident of birth. It's outdated crap.

And the tourist argument is clever PR from the RF - if you look at the top 10 UK tourist attractions I think only one is related to rhe royals from memory.

Whether you like the Cambridges or not W has a long wait before he becomes king - his dad's next.

Ubik1 · 17/08/2015 08:25

And Kate treated like a sort of brood mare. Ugh.

'An heir and a spare...'

limitedperiodonly · 17/08/2015 08:29

I went to a trade fair in Florence and Andrew was there - they'd probably just opened a luxury golf course nearby.

People were thrilled to see him. I'd never have believed the British Monarchy had such cachet abroad unless I'd seen it. Even the fat, jowly one with hyperthyroidal eyes.

AvonleaAnne · 17/08/2015 08:34

Averse not adverse OP. I wouldn't normally post like this but I was worried you might actually be saying "work adverse" in real life. Grin

Griphook · 17/08/2015 08:35

Op I'm going go to jump in and completely agree with you, there is somthing about the Cambridges that really put me off the whole royal family.

They feel they need to modernise the royal family, which seems to involve going on holiday and working far less then complaining, they do seem to whinge a bit.

Honestly if thet don't like it leave, let someone else take over.

Add to that the middletons and their absolute desire to be rich and famous I think adds to my opinion that the Cambridges might be the downfall of the royal family.

Buxhoeveden · 17/08/2015 08:38

Exactly that Grip.

(Thanks Avon, thankfully I managed 'aversion' in the next line so i'll put it down to a typo rather than marble-loss Smile )

You do realise that they give about 2 pound per month for free. They give a load of money from their land rents and their personal salary that they are gifted by the government is LESS than what we get by their land rents. They also bring in MILLIONS in tourism.

Costacoffeeplease · 17/08/2015 08:43

I agree too, actually, watching their wedding did it for me - why on earth were all those people camping out to see a rather ordinary girl from Berkshire? Bonkers

The Queen, yes, even Charles I don't mind, but William and Kate Hmm

LumpySpacedPrincess · 17/08/2015 08:44

I can't get over the fact that Charles was bezzy mate with Jimmy Saville.

Liquid the tourists would still come, just we would see a higher profit margin as we wouldn't be funding sitting tenants.

FreudiansSlipper · 17/08/2015 08:45

I think once the queen dies there will changes and more support for us to become a republic

She has gained respect for her dedication to her role that can't be said of others things will change

They are lazy and their pr spin of we live normal lives hasn't fooled anyone such waste they cools both use their role to such an advantage but choose not to

FarFromAnyRoad · 17/08/2015 08:47

I agree with ssd and elke. You sound like you're coming at this from the point of view of someone whose sandwiches have been pissed on.
I'm also not sure that the Middletons demonstrate a desire to be famous - as far as I can see they do not flaunt themselves and their connection at all. The fact that they are photographed wherever they go or whatever they wear is not, I think, what they are after. Their absolute desire to be rich? Oh how silly! Who doesn't want to be rich ffs! Silly thread, silly premise.

Costacoffeeplease · 17/08/2015 08:47

Yes, the middletons have got what they wanted - although her dad always looks a bit of a spare part
