to not give a monkey's about "the death of the nightclub"?

Apparently, more than half of the country’s nightclubs have closed in the past 10 years. Reasons cited so far (sensibly) include extended opening hours in pubs, more rigorous application of noise pollution laws, the smoking ban and differing financial circumstances.

Back in the 90's and early 00's, a nightclub was the only place you could get a drink after 11, so like the rest of them I dutifully went out in suit trousers, "casual" shirt and work shoes every Friday night on the off-chance that my friends and I might fancy another beer after last orders and didn't want to be turned away by skinhead Neanderthals after queueing for an hour because of "no jeans" or "no runners". AIBU to thank the gods that those days are long gone, and I can now sit with my mates in our favourite pub, paying reasonable prices for drinks, not sweating and not having to shout over shit house music until 1 am if we so choose?

i won't miss "nightclubs" as such.
i might miss clubs where you danced all night to hard techno and took shed loads of drugs.
i'm too old now so it doesn't really affect me either way.

RedToothBrush · 14/08/2015 16:56

I couldn't give a toss. They were really quite anti-social. You couldn't have a conversation in them.

Don't you think its funny how the rise in internet dating and the decline of nightclubs are pretty much at the same time? So no I don't mourn their loss for that reason.

There are a lot more restaurants and family pubs serving food instead. Which I can only think is a good thing. Together with the fact that todays teenagers drink a lot less than we did 20 years ago.

I don't really look back with too many rose tinted specs. It was a meat market most of the time and I'm glad we've progressed a little from that.

What I do mourn is the loss of gig venues for live music. That's much more of a shame. Digital sharing and online videos are just not the same.

Samwelly · 14/08/2015 16:59

Do any of you Brummies remember Maximillions night club? If I remember correctly, it was off Broad Street.

OrangeFluff · 14/08/2015 17:05

I'm another who spent many a night dancing away in Snobs! Although it was from the year 2000 onwards for me. I've even been once since it moved last year! Blush Grin

ravenAK · 14/08/2015 17:59

Bradford Rio's Pericombobulations - that was the one with the fish ponds in the bogs wasn't it? Poor fish...

Also liked Planet X in Liverpool, Jilly's in Manchester.

Want2bSupermum · 14/08/2015 18:03

cress I live in Hoboken and Maxwells shut a couple of years ago. DH and I used to go there all the time. Rogos was bought out and the new owner has some great bands playing every so often. Apart from that it's bloody puppet mania at the symposium store if you want some good music!

Sparklingbrook · 14/08/2015 18:05

Oh god I feel ancient. I was at Snobs mid-late eighties. Blush

Want2bSupermum · 14/08/2015 18:06

Oh and the gay bar which was hendersons I think is now a Cuban bar and restaurant. The previous owner used to convert it back to hendersons over gay pride weekend. New owner doesn't do that so we don't patronize the place. La Isla is still open so we go there instead.

Pericombobulations · 14/08/2015 18:17

ravenAK - Rio's with fishtanks in the loo OMG no, you are thinking of Maestros in town. Rio's made the Phono look posh!

Starburst123 · 14/08/2015 18:26

DP says we should organise our own Mumsnet nightclub, and call it Cockwombles!!
My best clubbing years were spent on the rock / goth scene in Brighton in the late 90's. The nearest I've come to it these days (I'm pushing 40, living just outside London) is a couple of DJ's who play in our local pub occasionally. They only play vinyl, and swing between the Pointer Sisters, Queen, Toy Dolls, Captain Sensible, Bad Manners, and all sorts of sillyness. They are playing our wedding next year.
My friends have all graduated from the school of cool to the school of "wear flat shoes, leave your dignity at the door, and dance like no-one's watching".

Fauchelevent · 14/08/2015 18:31

waves at Brummie nightclubbers can you believe I spent my entire life from 0-19 in Brum and never ONCE stepped foot in snobs?

I'm still of an age where nightclubbing is done by friends and as I don't drink or do drugs, I usually can't think of anything worse than a "night out partying". I've enjoyed a few nights with music more up my street than the deep house shit that's popular now, but I can't wait until it's more acceptable to stay in.

Although I hate clubbing, a lot of the London gay clubs, drag clubs and so on are closing and that does make me sad. A lot of them had a lot of history and were great nights out with good music, they felt safe and didn't have hoardes of leery men trying to pull the straight girls who had gone with their friends. They were really accepting, loving places, complete breath of fresh air on the london scene but now lots of them are closing and to me, that's really sad.

Pepperpot99 · 14/08/2015 18:38

I used to club loads in the 80s (I'm an old gimmer now). Being a Norf Lahndan gel I hung out at Le Beate Route, the Wag, Gossips, Camden Palace, Limelight and Heaven. Rubbed shoulders with loads of celebs and snogged a few! In the mid to late 80s I was well into the gay scene - Traffic, the Bell, Scala nite, Heads and best of all the Stallions tea dances on a Sunday night which cost the princely sum of £4 to get in. Later still upstairs at Ronnie Scotts and the 100 club. By that stage I was fresh out of university and earning a small wage but it was entirely possible to have a great time clubbing without spending a fortune. Those days are gone I fear Sad. I feel lucky to have experienced London at its best. And because of where I lived I could get the night bus all the way home at 3am from central London!!

Sparklingbrook · 14/08/2015 18:38

Fauch Shock Where were you?

Christinayanglah · 14/08/2015 18:41

Ahhhhh it's been a while since I danced around my handbag or lurched about to a slow dance

sharonthewaspandthewineywall · 14/08/2015 18:46

Another brummie clubber here but 90's so: Snobs, Exile, Pulse (then Zanzibar), Central Park, Stoodi Bakers and Bakers, Dome II, DNA, The Steering Wheel, Q Club and loads more ive forgotten about!

Fauchelevent · 14/08/2015 18:47

sparkling Avoiding the sticky floors and seats that everyone was so fond of! Apparently the new Snobs isn't so dirty and now it's lost its charm Grin

Sparklingbrook · 14/08/2015 18:48

Ooh yes Christina the lurching. Then the awful moment when the lights go on at the end of the night. Sad

Christinayanglah · 14/08/2015 18:51

Oh god I know, I always looked like aunt Sally as with every lager and lime I decided I needed more blusher and red lipstick

Eastpoint · 14/08/2015 18:54

Pepperpot I used to go to Le Beatroute, the Wag, the Astoria, 151, L'Equipe Anglaise, etc. I went to the opening night of Limelight & it was the first time I'd been to a club where the bass made my stomach bounce. I think some of those clubs started to close when the Ministry of Sound first opened and e was really popular. Going to clubs gave me my aerobic exercise, I'd go and dance two or three times a week and have so much fun.

Sparklingbrook · 14/08/2015 18:57

YY in the loos plastering it on Christina. I dread to think what I looked like but I thought I looked bloody amazing. Grin

Never ever took a coat, as couldn't be arsed with the raffle ticket malarkey in the cloakroom and i would have lost it anyway. So always half dressed and freezing. Hmm

Christinayanglah · 14/08/2015 19:03

Let's just say i was very into Dynasty at the time, shoulder pads were everything......

Want2bSupermum · 14/08/2015 19:10

Haha my dad was shocked that I knew my way around Digbeth so well. Remember all those places. What was the name of the club on broad street by the canal? I never paid to get in after I offered to help behind the bar one night when they were packed. They were shocked I could make mixed drinks quickly and was faster than the register with prices.

Sparklingbrook · 14/08/2015 19:12

Bobby Browns Want? I loved that place.

HelpMeObiWanYouAreMyOnlyHope · 14/08/2015 19:13

And this one too ...
