to not give a monkey's about "the death of the nightclub"?

Apparently, more than half of the country’s nightclubs have closed in the past 10 years. Reasons cited so far (sensibly) include extended opening hours in pubs, more rigorous application of noise pollution laws, the smoking ban and differing financial circumstances.

Back in the 90's and early 00's, a nightclub was the only place you could get a drink after 11, so like the rest of them I dutifully went out in suit trousers, "casual" shirt and work shoes every Friday night on the off-chance that my friends and I might fancy another beer after last orders and didn't want to be turned away by skinhead Neanderthals after queueing for an hour because of "no jeans" or "no runners". AIBU to thank the gods that those days are long gone, and I can now sit with my mates in our favourite pub, paying reasonable prices for drinks, not sweating and not having to shout over shit house music until 1 am if we so choose?

CalleighDoodle

"Skinhead neanderthals was really rude and very unreasonable."

True though, even now that they have to be licensed some are still just Neanderthals in monkey suits.

I can remember being a regular to clubs and getting turned away because the monkey on the door didn't like the the group that we were in.

I can remember people being killed by the "Doorman" by being thrown down the stairs/pummelled to death.

From memory several clubs near me (where I grew up) closed/changed hands regularly because people had trouble with the door staff.

I always went to Wigan Pier, it was quite a distance for us to travel but we loved it. It was a sticky floored dive but it was all about the music.

They do pop up events now and tour the northwest. It is excellent and has gone from a night out most weekends to a full on experience Grin

Sparklingbrook · 14/08/2015 13:20

I am getting a bit wistful here. Birmingham in the 80s was the place to be.

I went back recently. It has changed, and not in a good way.

Frostycake · 14/08/2015 13:31

If you want clubs, come to Stoke-on-Trent. It's like travelling back to the 90s. They've just opened a new club in the city centre with a 'beach' theme. I think they've got a pool, manned by lifeguards. Death trap if you ask me (when combined with alcohol) but I'm sure the young 'uns will enjoy it.

I agree with Tinder replacing nightclubs for hooking up though.

DrDre · 14/08/2015 13:36

girliefriend snobs was next to Five Ways when I was in Brum (mid 90s)
I think I know the one you mean (near the pagoda) but I can't for the life of me remember the name of it!

DrDre · 14/08/2015 13:40

It's come to me now - does The Dome ring a bell?

girliefriend · 14/08/2015 13:57

Yes The Dome!!

Oh my God, so many memories Grin

Anyone from Southampton here thats been to Lennons?! That could get messy as well!!

LovelyFriend · 14/08/2015 14:09

for me bars and pubs are for drinking and talking.

Nightclubs are for drugs and dancing - not much talking is required. I never went to drinking/pick up type clubs as I found them to be very tedious. So I'm not mourning them. I will still go out to a club/rave/party for a special night once a year of so. The more bass the better.

sandycove · 14/08/2015 14:11

I knew quite a few who went to Wigan Pier, it had a massive following. Special coaches laid on, no alcohol, people danced all night, I think it was mainly soul music, ? then went to work the next day. There are some great youtube videos of Wigan Pier.

TrueBlueYorkshire · 14/08/2015 14:16

The death of nightclubs came when the young realised they could go to their favourite pub with their mates and still pull on Tinder without having to waste money on alcopops and the kind of pretentious people that frequented such joints with the added bonus of avoiding hours of tedious gyrating to electronic or god forbid house music.

God I am old...

SorrelForbes · 14/08/2015 14:28

I spent my early 20s clubbing on Union Street Plymouth (The Tube, Jesters, Boobs, The Street, Avis, Sargent Peppers, Bier Keller). With one exception none of the clubs are still there today. I drove down there at 11pm on a Friday about two weeks ago. Everywhere was shut and I didn't see anyone until I reached the Lloyds pub which had a massive queue waiting to get in.

SorrelForbes · 14/08/2015 14:29

Oops, and the Dance Academy.

ChairOfTheBored · 14/08/2015 14:37

Loving the mentions of Snobs on this thread - I lost many a happy Friday night there in my student days!

But now, give me a comfy sofa, some background music and a chance to chat and I'm happy. Oh, and in bed by 22:30, obviously.

Want2bSupermum · 14/08/2015 14:38

Death of nightclubs is sad because I could dance off a weeks worth of excess and it was a great place for the music industry to test music, especially dance music. Living in northern NJ we go over to UES to the Spanish places for good dancing music for low cost.

No wonder so many younger people are fatter. They are not dancing and quite frankly the UK has been streets ahead with good dance music. I hope they are able to continue that. Many people in the UK don't realize just how much music from the UK is exported. It is a huge factor when you look at the health of the economy.

ChairOfTheBored · 14/08/2015 14:43

And the Dome had become the Dome II ... was still a sticky carpeted hell though.

kali110 · 14/08/2015 14:44

When i lived near brum i used to love going clubbing every weekend. Excells, eddies, subside, subway city.', even the the pubs the gallows and costa. Now when i come back to visit friends there are no clubs i would go to. They've closed any alternative clubs and pubs bar scruffs.
I go to the pub where i live now, but not much as its just a boring country pub!

Hobbes8 · 14/08/2015 14:56

Snobs was mid-90s for me. Wednesdays was student / indie night. We saw Ocean Colour Scene once and my friend told them they were shit. Happy days!

Also rock night at Edwards, and cheesy dance at Dome and Ritzy. I wasn't so into proper clubbing, despite being the right age in the super club hey day. I think I saw Jeremy Healy (was that his name?) at Bakers though, and LTJ Bukem at Ministry of Sound. Some of my friends liked Bobby Browns as well so I used to tag along with them.

It's not my scene anymore but it does seem a shame that today's young uns won't have those experiences. There's something about collectively listening to music that you all love and then having a sneaky snog that isn't replicated by Spotify and tinder.

DrDre · 14/08/2015 15:01

Yes I spent many a Wednesday night at Snobs in the mid 90s.

Pericombobulations · 14/08/2015 15:33

waves at ravenAK The Phono was fab, but spent more time in the sunny Bradford climes in places like Rio's

cressetmama · 14/08/2015 16:09

Back when dinosaurs roamed I was in my twenties and lived in Hoboken NJ, we used to go to rock clubs three or four nights a week.... CBGB, Max's Kansas City, Area, the Ritz, Danceteria, Peppermint Lounge, Mud Club and others long forgotten.... Went late, knew everyone, home for a shower and at work by 8.30. The stamina of youth!!

TinklyLittleLaugh · 14/08/2015 16:10

No alcohol at Wigan Casino but plenty of drugs.

No one has told my eldest two about the death of the nightclub, they are still dancing all night, coming home at five or six in the morning and lying in bed all the next day.

cressetmama · 14/08/2015 16:15

And no mortgage!

SmashingInAthleticWear · 14/08/2015 16:25

BeckerLleytonnever · 14/08/2015 16:37

I give a mionkeys cos people are now having nightclubs in their houses/flats and gardens, and cause a bloody noise nuisance!

NoArmaniNoPunani · 14/08/2015 16:37
