To cut a long story short, my best friend is having to re-home her cat due to her new tenancy not allowing for pets.
So me being an animal lover (already have a dog & 2 rats) i thought it would save heartbreak and be nice to take the cat in myself.

Anyway upon hearing my ideas, my Dm has got the arse and keeps banging on about her allergies and how i am selfish as she won't be able to visit my home anymore.
Saying that "am i joking" "you will put me in hospital" etc.
Tbf she has just got over phneumonia.
She is going to go mad when she finds out the reality the cat is being sent to me tomorrow evening!

Thing is i love my dm, and i enjoy her visits (daily, except from weekends) but it is my house and i believe if i want a cat then i shall have one.

Dm lives a block away and i can visit her if i wish, just as much.
So aib, to be pissed of that she has the arse over something that is my decision?

I have decided against having the cat afterall as it just wouldn't be fair on anyone.
It is a shame the cat must go to rescue though, but i guess all in all eventually she will find a nice new home.

I guess i didn't think about how severe an allergy may be, and upon reading up on here and on the internet, it seems even contact with someone that has a cat can be detremental to people with severe cat allergies.

Good call pumpkin. It's not just about the medical details, it's about the message it would send in an otherwise good relationship.

lunar1 · 13/08/2015 17:31

Good on you op.

MythicalKings · 13/08/2015 17:42

Good decision, OP.

ToadsJustFellFromTheSky · 13/08/2015 21:30

Ah well that's sad if the cat has to go to a rescue now but I'm sure he'll/she'll find a good home sooner or later.

almondcakes · 13/08/2015 21:35

That's good OP.

And maybe you starting this thread will make people more aware that allergies can be life threatening.

CassieBearRawr · 13/08/2015 22:20

Madness. I'm sure if her mum's allergies were life threatening she'd know about it by now and not be attempting to kill her mum with cat hair. Absolutely no evidence her mum will keel over at the mere sniff of a cat.

Your choice though OP you obviously love your mum a lot I hope she at least appreciates what you've done for her.

My f-mil is getting a puppy - totally fine with that - it's her decision/life/home and it will be fab company now she has retired and we live over an hour away and both work full time so we aren't there every week so I wouldn't expect her to not get a puppy but I have had to tell her I can't visit her home once the puppy is there (even if she puts it outside for me to visit) - she doesn't seem to believe this though. I certainly can't spend Christmas Eve at her house as we have been doing since ds was born and she will have to accept that this choice does exclude me from visiting her as I have asthma and am v allergic to dogs.

It is a hard choice but it isn't a case of her being awkward to point out what the cat would mean for her visiting your house so you have made the right decision if you want her to continue visiting your home.

Binky well I would class asthma, wheezing, itching, sneezing etc as pretty allergic Hmm

Fluffycloudland77 · 13/08/2015 22:53

I'd have taken the cat and visited her. Adults arent going to get rehomed while the rescues are in full kitten season.

patienceisvirtuous · 13/08/2015 22:55

Oh and streaming eyes.

Re being worried re long term effects of Benadryl... I am also allergic to pollen/dust/aerosols etc - Benadryl with acrivastine is the only thing that works despite years of trying other things including natural remedies...
