To miss the days when people were just 'thirsty'?!

What's all this shit with, 'hydrating'? It's called drinking fucking water!

Whenever I hear someone claiming to be 'dehydrated', I want to reach for my revolver. No, dear, you're not dehydrated, you're just thirsty. It won't hurt you to wait twenty minutes for a drink.

Advanced capitalism, combined with nanny-statism seems to have fostered a nation of adult-babies who can't got five minutes without a snack, needing a piss, or a plastic bottle to suck on. It truly does my head in.

I can't remember the last time I sat through a film or a play without multiple audience members nipping out at least once during the show. Yes, I do appreciate that SOME people suffer incontinence, or might have needed a shot of insulin but, come on, not on this scale!

Babycham

I think the rot set in with the "must drink 8 glasses of water a day" myth.

It's just moved up a notch from the 80s when Cosmo was unable to resist whacking it in every single one of their "ten things you must do if you want clear skin/big boobs/a man/a job" features.

GummyBunting · 12/08/2015 15:48

Sweet balls, having a healthy lifestyle is 'rot'?

I find it infuriating that (mainly older people) think that because they didn't die by eating processed foods and mainlining rollups, anyone who cares for themselves is pampered or precious.

AskingForAPal · 12/08/2015 15:50

Yes Thursday, that's bollocks about outdoor/physical workers not drinking during the day. My brother is outdoors clambering all over machinery all day and he's the biggest buyer of water I know. Most of the gardeners/builders I know bring a flask of tea or coffee with them on jobs.

And for those who work indoors, aircon in offices can make the air incredibly dry.

Babycham1979 · 12/08/2015 15:51

Gummy, there's no compelling medical evidence that drinking water can 'help fight obesity', other than the spurious argument that it may stop people feeling as hungry and therefore eat less junk. The same applies to attention span; according to both the BMJ and the US National Library of Medicine
National Institutes of Health, it MAY aid concentration.

To suggest that it CAN address both these issues is to either be deliberately disingenuous, or to unthinkingly recite more industry propaganda. Which proves my initial point somewhat.

The thing is the whole 'you need 2 litres of water a day' or whatever quantity is actually NOT meant to be 2 litres of water to drink but 2 litres of water in your diet, ie including water from fruits and veg, the soup you had at lunch time, the milk in your cereals etc etc. We've never been told that we all need to drink that much.

And of course, it's water that is important. Drinking a can of coke probably doesn't help (well it is more likelty to be detrimental as it also has a duiretic effect therefore cancelling sopme of its' hydrating' properties).

More generally, it IS true that we all seem to be unable to go wo something to eat/drink for any length of time now.
I have been wondering if the thing at school re you have to have a water bottle and then you can go to the loo whenever you want etc... that you find in schools now means that actually children and then teenagers/adults have never learnt to plan around their body needs/learn how they work.
I mean, yes you can need the loo in the middle of a film but why not going to the loo before the film? That's what I ask my dcs to do so they don't disrupt other people next to them....

BitOutOfPractice · 12/08/2015 15:56

I truly cannot understand how you can be so FURIOUS about this

GummyBunting · 12/08/2015 15:57

Baby That's why I said 'can' help, and not 'does' help. I'm of the opinion, due to my own experience, that it aids weight loss/ hunger management.

ThursdayLast · 12/08/2015 15:58

But sometimes I need the loo during the film even though I went before

Feline9 · 12/08/2015 15:59

but why not going to the loo before the film?

Because maybe they didn't need it then?!

Babycham1979 · 12/08/2015 15:59

Bitoutofpractice, the funny thing is, I have absolutely no problem with people smoking in public, swearing in pub gardens, parking in parent-and-child spaces OR visiting prostitutes.

Hmmm.....maybe I'm in the wrong place....?!

Medical reasons aside, how did we ever make it to adulthood?! There were no water bottles on our desks when I was at school in the 70s and 80s. We had a drink of water at lunchtime and that was about it. My drinking habits changed when I started working in an office at 16 and got introduced to the tea run. Wink

BitOutOfPractice · 12/08/2015 16:00

Do you need a soothing arm stroke?

ppeatfruit · 12/08/2015 16:01

YABU they're probably popping out for a fag anyway and come back stinking now that IS objectionable.

As is the continual drinking of fizzy drinks.

I fill a small plastic bottle with filtered water when I go out, which is so much more tasty than tap or normal salty bottled water and if it upsets you then tough titty Grin

IKnowIAmButWhatAreYou · 12/08/2015 16:05

YANBU OP.

It's bollocks on the whole. I drink water during the day if I remember, but know for a fact that I'm getting it from other sources. It's the latest in a long line of fads that are

If I go for a run I don't bother taking water unless it's over 8-10 miles, I can go 80 minutes without a drink, even when running. The kids in my D0fE group don't carry as much water for a days trekking as some people in my office seem to slurp down.....

I was surprised by the amount of people that got up to go to the loo the last time I went to the cinema too...

Loving your description of the Adult Babies - perfect!! Grin

getbusyliving · 12/08/2015 16:11

Aren't you thirsty only when dehydrated?

I think a lot of ppl carry water round as you're told it will make you beautiful and your skin all plumped up as opposed to shrivelled and old Wink

Babycham1979 · 12/08/2015 16:13

Indeed, getbuysliving. Lots of people also used to spread margarine all over everything because they'd been convinced that trans-fats were somehow better for you than butter.

Twas ever thus. There's nothing new under the sun.

Now I understand why I overheard a Mum tell her 3 year old DS to stay hydrated lol!
Mentally backtracking the number of conversations I may have used thirsty inadvertantly

YANBU

I get headaches when I inadvertently drink too many cups of tea to ward off the freezing Scottish summer. I suspect overhydration.

Mrscog · 12/08/2015 16:18

Ha ha ha at the thought of a farmer going all day without a drink! They're the worst for constant refuelling/drinks/tea/coffee. Even when sat in a combine cab for 16 hours a day like at the moment, my Dad takes about 2l of squaush with him!

ppeatfruit · 12/08/2015 16:20

No that's too much caffeine howabout

IKnowIAmButWhatAreYou · 12/08/2015 16:22

Even when sat in a combine cab for 16 hours a day like at the moment, my Dad takes about 2l of squaush with him!

And that proves the OPs point nicely - if a farmer (who won't just be sat in the cab) only needs 2l all day, why does some tippex monger need a jerrycan full??

ThursdayLast · 12/08/2015 16:25

Why does anyone have to justify their thirst???

Feline9 · 12/08/2015 16:26

IKnow because they want to and it's none of your business.

suzannefollowmyvan · 12/08/2015 16:29

I also think that the dangers of not constantly maintaining optimal fluid balance have been vastly overstated.

However, I tend to take a small bottle of water with me much of the time because I sometimes have a dry mouth and it's just nice to have a mouthful or two of water :)

JeanSeberg · 12/08/2015 16:30

tippexmonger

New word of the week, fabulous IKnow.

Queeltie · 12/08/2015 16:46

I think it is simply part of the instant gratification culture. The idea that we shouldn't feel thirsty or hungry without immediately gratifying it. This general culture does have negative impacts.
