To just not approve of alcohol served on flights?

I just don't see why it's necessary to serve alcohol on flights. Why? People who smoke can't do that....and fair enough...alcohol makes many people act like twats.

Serial I think maybe because I get drunk VERY easily, I might have a skewed idea of what it does. If I'd had 3 wines I'd be absolutely steaming....I can have one sip and I literally feel it altering me....one glass and I'm silly.

There are many very irritating things on flights, and to be honest, I've never found drunk people to be one of them. I've not once been on a flight and had any noticeably drunk people being loud or annoying.

Where exactly are you flying to? Ibiza?

On the long haul flights I've been on they do indeed just give you wine if you ask for it when they are doing the rounds. I think I've had four or five bottles (the mini ones obviously) over the course of a long haul flight before. This is on a long flight, with plenty of water and food around it, so not exactly enough to get wasted. It makes sitting in a hunk of metal marginally more entertaining, and helps with sleeping.

Comparing it to smoking is pretty idiotic. Smoking actively harms those around you in a confined environment. Drinking doesn't. There is no way to prevent smoking from harming others around you, whilst the vast majority of people who drink on flights don't cause any fuss.

GraysAnalogy · 11/08/2015 15:10

Whereas I need two bottles to get to that level, so there's a huge disparity

PanGalaticGargleBlaster · 11/08/2015 15:10

'alcohol makes many some people act like twats.'

Fixed that for you.

AIBU to just not approve of sanctimonious judgmental whinging cunts to be allowed on to flights where they disturb my gin and tonic with their rolling eyes, crossed arms and tutting.

SerialBox · 11/08/2015 15:11

Wow that is a low tolerance to alcohol. I had one in the airport, two on board. As did the others I was travelling with and we were all fine. The young lads on that flight had a lot more and aside from a wee sing song (which I'm pretty sure DD started) I would doubt anyone heard a peep out of them.

AuntyMag10 · 11/08/2015 15:12

Pan yanbu Grin

Comparing cigarettes to alcohol really?

TheHouseOnBellSt · 11/08/2015 15:12

Pan who mentioned cunts? Not me....you sound very self defensive.

What 'limit' would you set for this breathalysing, OP? Because I'm fairly certain I can sit and snooze without being a dick on considerably more than the legal limit for driving!
I like a G and T and a glass of wine on a flight. It's a pleasant start to the holiday. I've flown a lot, including long haul, and never had a problem with drunk passengers. The measures are controlled and you just can't get a steward to your seat often enough to get bladdered.

TheHouseOnBellSt · 11/08/2015 15:14

Serial it is low yes...I had to learn as a teen that I just couldn't drink much at all. Now at gatherings I have one glass over a few hours.

OP posts:
ThroughThickAndThin01 · 11/08/2015 15:14

Just because you can't take your drink you want it stopped for everyone else.......Rightio.

GraysAnalogy · 11/08/2015 15:15

Not many people can drink much as a teen, you build a tolerance as you get older as you drink.

CloserToFiftyThanTwenty · 11/08/2015 15:16

Yes, the mini bottles! The ones that barely constitute a glass in most pubs these days

I think if you know you can't handle alcohol to the extent that one sip makes you a bit squiffy, you should politely decline the offer of alcohol, but leave the rest of us who enjoy a drink alone unless we really are so pie eyed that it is unpleasant for everyone (in which case the crew have procedures to follow to deal with it)

cardibach · 11/08/2015 15:17

So you have learned your limit and stick to it, but the rest of us can't be trusted to do that and need it banning. Great.

SerialBox · 11/08/2015 15:18

But not everyone has that low tolerance. I think YABU if I'm honest. I can't see how anyone even being tipsy would disturb you on a flight.

To not approve of someone getting bladdered on a flight, being aggression fair enough but I think you'll find that alot of people are just twats. It's not alcohol that makes them like that, it's the way they are.

SerialBox · 11/08/2015 15:19

or being aggressive that should have read.

Spartans · 11/08/2015 15:19

Virgin Atlantic give it away.

I hate when people start wanting to ban something because some people act like dicks.

People act like dicks in town centres all the time. Would you ban it there too?

How about just deal with the knobbers

capricalia · 11/08/2015 15:19

I'm a very nervous flyer and have a few drinks to settle me down. I'd be a more awful passenger without it as I have ended up panicking and crying once before in-flight, luckily a quite empty plane.

Theimpossiblegirl · 11/08/2015 15:22

I'm a bit of a nervous flyer so the extra G&T when we hit turbulence was very much appreciated last week I can tell you.

I wouldn't drink on a flight if I was driving at the other end but it does help me to relax (while DH and the kids laugh at me). There's a big difference for most people between a couple of small drinks and getting hammered.

TheHouseOnBellSt · 11/08/2015 15:28

Spartan yes but I'm not forced to sit feet away from people in town centres for hours on end.

BitOutOfPractice · 11/08/2015 15:28

I fly very regularly including, very frequently, to Amsterdam. There are very often large groups of lads / girls going away together. Often they've had a few drinks.

So what? They have never done me any harm. In fact they often make me smile. They are only ever a bit loud, not rowdy or offensive.

I personally like a dink on a flight. If it's a holiday it is the start of the holiday. If it's a return from business, it's a wind down.

I think you need to unclench OP

MrsTerryPratchett · 11/08/2015 15:29

I think some people like others being told what to do and some people like to make the rules as a society as we rub along. The alcohol and seat reclining thing makes me think you are one of the former, OP.

I hated Singapore. You'd probably love it. Takes all sorts.

I used to take Valium when I flew. Now I don't but I will have a glass of wine. I'm not (on flights) a twat.

Fairygodfucker · 11/08/2015 15:30

I hate flying. I really hate flying. I booked flights for October this morning which I'm dreading already. I will be having a few a medicinal whiskey. It's only an hours flight but it banks a lot. I'm a fully grown up adult perfectly capable consuming alcohol in a responsible manner.

I really hate sweeping bans imposed because a tiny minority either act like idiots or take offence to such idiocy.

patterkiller · 11/08/2015 15:39

Yabu. I've flown regularly and have never seen anything involving alcohol that has made me question it been served. Seat reclining arguments, yes. The twats are probably that with or without a drink. Ban the twats not the g&t.
