Aibu to buy lego for myself

As a child I loved lego and played it with my little sister until teenage years (just a box of random pieces, no sets). I've just started playing Duplo with toddler DD and it's reminded me how great it is. However there just isn't the same satisfaction with such a limited number of pieces and currently no baseplate. Should I get myself a box of lego or should I wait until I can fully share the joy with DD? As she is not yet two, it would be a while before we could have it out in the day, but I feel silly getting it just for myself! Anyone else feel unreasonable for having children's toys as an adult?

I got the Lego Death Star for my 40th - epic present, now sits on a display unit next to me. Also have most of the Star Wars fleet built next to me on display, and am hoarding the Back to the Future car and Ghostbusters car for a rainy day to build. Also a smaller collection of LOTR lego.

Lego Star Wars Advent calender bought most years too.

I must have the BBT lego set, I'm also desiring the lego Smaug sighs

LovelyWeatherForDucks · 11/08/2015 11:22

DH loves lego, I often buy him sets for birthday / xmas. DS is only 2 but will benefit from the giant stash when he is older! An investment of sorts, especially as it has high resale value.

Noodledoodledoo · 11/08/2015 12:12

I forgot about the modular buildings - we have most of those!!

Also recommend joining VIP club - you get 5% back in points for each purchase in Lego stores or on Lego website (not at legoland) and the points soon build to be able to buy more!!!

Big Bang Theory might be an idea for DH christmas present.

I also have the never ending calendar and pen pots at work!!

ChwatFeechers · 11/08/2015 12:17

Not unreasonable at all! I took my daughter shopping to spend her birthday money recently and was devastated when she didn't buy a new set, she claims she's 'too old' now to play with lego. (11!)

Shall have to wait until my baby boy is a few years older now.

BlackeyedSusan · 11/08/2015 12:22

that book is great as I picked up 20 quids worth of lego from the charity shop which is definitely several sets, but all mixed up. gives scope to do your own thing. the children buy sets. rarely complete them. use the bits for playing all sorts of games. they are more free builders at the momnet though they could do with following instructions to learn how to make things really interesting with all sorts of twiddly bits before going freestyle.

WeirdCatLady · 11/08/2015 14:16

OP, each year lego do roughly three advent calendars. They do a Star Wars one, a lego City/pirates one and a lego friends one. Prices range from £19-£25. Each day you get a little something to build. You can buy them either online at the lego shop (fatal to start looking on there though) or toy shops/argos sell them. They are a little overpriced for what you get but are a necessity if you love lego Grin

DH has just discovered this guy on the internet making scale model castles www.carneycastles.com and is hooked, he's planning on starting his own asap, he has promised that kragle won't be involved, each castle will be dissassembled and they won't take over the house yeah right

I'm quite looking forward to some sneaky building myself - I'm not allowed to put DS's models back together after he demolishes remodels them, as this would apparently be stifling his creativity.

fawkes182 · 11/08/2015 15:41

BeckerLleytonnever · 11/08/2015 16:34

they've got those adult colouring books out now so why not?

My excuse is that DD loves lego, but I find it very very therapeutic and calming too. we build things together-usually houses-and apart too.

Best invention EVER (apart from denim jeans and toilets!Grin)

elliejjtiny · 11/08/2015 19:06

DH is an AFOL. He's one of these guys (outs self) www.bricktothepast.com/

The dc's aren't allowed to touch his lego and the only time I've ever seen him cry is when DS1 smashed up one of his models and scattered the pieces everywhere.

Personally I hate the stuff.

ArriettyMatilda · 11/08/2015 19:17

Lego for Christmas it is then! Just to build the excitement and to have a toy to play with on Christmas Day! I will be keeping an eye out for deals.

Wow ellie, just wow! That's amazing!

bettyberry · 11/08/2015 20:11

NO! This is where I out myself and confess to having my own ghostbusters lego kit, several of the mixels, star wars kids and many other geeky toys.

There are studies to suggest that adults who play are generally more relaxed - its a great relaxation technique to sit and build with lego, can inspire, fuel creativity and all the other benefits children get from play but in we adults too.

NoraRobertsismyguiltypleasure · 11/08/2015 21:15

This was a bad thread to start reading - I just bought a little beach house set on ebay. I have always loved Lego and was very proud when as a nanny a few years ago the 7 year old I looked after said I was the only adult he allowed to play with his Lego because I was "really good at just making up cool stuff"!
I might get someone to buy my DD Lego for her 3rd birthday this year (I've already bought a playmobil set for her - she loves little stuff).

MrsTerryPratchett · 11/08/2015 21:19

Arrrggghhh, there's a problem in the lab. DD isn't very interested but I pretend it's for her.

David Beckham bought himself the lego taj mahal.

5Foot5 · 11/08/2015 21:20

Lego is great and so is Meccano, though harder to get hold of these days.

For building houses this looks great arckit.com/

MuddlingMackem · 11/08/2015 21:37

DH has spent a fortune in our nearest Lego store. His latest purchases are Slave 1, Ghostbusters and the Big Bang Theory. Grin

I still have all of my and my brother's Lego from our childhood, the 80s versions of the range which is now Lego City. I used to enjoy building the town, he and his friends used to play with it. Everyone happy even though I got the mick taken out of me at school for getting Lego for Christmas when I was 14. Pah, I was ahead of the curve on Lego being for adults. Grin

DH and I have a ton of Star Wars Lego, the early sets, but won't let DS play with it as he mixes all of his sets up. Grr!

Supervet · 11/08/2015 21:48

Our Lego place has adult nights!

SamJohnsonsBoy · 11/08/2015 21:59

Yes. It is totally childish and you should be beyond that sort of thing and I do not have a big box of the stuff down in the cellar.

ArriettyMatilda · 12/08/2015 15:59

bettyberry well if science supports me buying lego then who am I to argue Grin

Which is the best website/shop for deals?
