To feel sick (literally) when I hear the phrase 'meal deal'?

Not for any other reason than there are too many 'ul' sounds together? Anyone else get this? Is it a thing?

That's almost as bad as a "Light Lunch".

Which also makes me want to shriek.

WoonerismSpit · 11/08/2015 20:49

DAMN YOU Sanity!

Salmotrutta · 11/08/2015 20:49

A "good feed" makes me think of sharks in a feeding frenzy.

BleachEverything · 11/08/2015 20:51

I do get what you are saying.

Salmotrutta · 11/08/2015 20:52

The worst sentence ever:-

"I have prepared a meal to return the favour to our friends who invited us round for a light lunch so we should all enjoy a good feed"

Salmotrutta · 11/08/2015 20:53

Oops - should have punctuated!!

Never mind.

I'm off to "plate up" DHs evening meal...

WoonerismSpit · 11/08/2015 20:57

I bet he will enjoy 'chowing down' on that, Salmo...

Chchchchanging · 11/08/2015 21:13

You're pronouncing it incorrectly...
Meal deal = meel deel phonetically!

BertieBotts · 11/08/2015 21:22

No it's not Chchchc. Try pronouncing meal/meel without even a hint of a. Meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeel. It doesn't work, the L sounds all wrong and short.

We do all sorts of weird things we don't notice with pronunciation, honestly. I know /ea/ is taught in reading as being /ee/ but even with ee when the consonant ends the word it sounds different. Compare peel and peeling. You don't say pee-l. You say peeyul or peeyel. (spelling just depends how you want to transcribe the ? sound.) But we do say pee-ling. Not peeyuling. That would sound wrong. Likewise if you say peel a carrot, the L takes the A from "a carrot" and it becomes pee-la-ca-rut. You don't say peeyul a carrot. But we talk about the carrot peeyul...

I don't like it, again because of the word 'meal'. Reminds me of 'dog meal' or 'mealworms'.
