To feel sick (literally) when I hear the phrase 'meal deal'?

Not for any other reason than there are too many 'ul' sounds together? Anyone else get this? Is it a thing?

I hate the sound of plastic bags or packaging. I thought everyone did but now suddenly realising perhaps others find it annoying rather than mildly painful like I do?

raviolidreams · 11/08/2015 11:15

I enjoy a meal deal, but am another who dislikes the word 'meal'. I also dislike the word 'deal' - Noel Edmonds ruined it for me.

Guitargirl · 11/08/2015 11:15

I hate 'spends' and 'jobs'.

I saw written down the other day 'Am making DD do some jobs to earn holiday spends'. Arrrgghhhhh!!!!!

DeeWe · 11/08/2015 11:30

"ul" sound? In which words. m-ea-l d-ea-l. No can't find it? I can't even think of an accent where you'd say mul dul?

Change it to "A lunch bunch" or "a dinner winner" or "three (items) for tea" or something and see if that makes it better.

MotherOfHens · 11/08/2015 11:41

I didn't have an issue with the word meal... until I started reading this thread and heard it repeated over and over inside my head. Now I totally get it.

WoonerismSpit · 11/08/2015 11:49

I am like this with a few words, they genuinely make me feel ill.

Snack, stink, horny (that's the worst one of all) scrummy, frilly...It's horrible to even type them.

I also detest the phrase 'let me pick your brains'.

BertieBotts · 11/08/2015 11:59

Dee you don't say mul dul, but in some accents you say meeyul deeyul. (It's actually me-al de-al but most of us don't enunciate the A so it becomes schwa which is often written as /u/. In fact I think most accents do? I can't imagine actually saying meel deel because the consonant can't just end after that. Even words like reel become reeyul.

RoboticSealpup · 11/08/2015 12:34

guitar oh, I hate "jobs" too!! I used to have a really annoying colleague who wad always talking about all the jobs she had to do the weekend. She also used to say "of an evening". I hate that phrase, it makes no damn sense!

Tenieht · 11/08/2015 12:39

How can people say they don't like the word "meal"? It's just a word!

Salmotrutta · 11/08/2015 13:10

I don't like "meal" either. Especially "my meal"!

"I was enjoying my meal when X,y or Z happened" makes me squirm.

And I especially hate "I prepared a meal"

Coffeemarkone · 11/08/2015 13:12

my brother actually once dumped a GF when she asked if he would like to go for a 'meal'!

lilacblossomtime · 11/08/2015 13:19

Didn't know so many people hate the word meal. There doesn't seem to be a good alternative though.

Coffeemarkone · 11/08/2015 13:22

" There doesn't seem to be a good alternative though. "

lunch , dinner, supper, tea?

Nightboattocairo · 11/08/2015 13:29

I can't stand the word 'meal' either. And also hate people describing 'steak dinners' or 'fish & chip dinners'.

Nightboattocairo · 11/08/2015 13:31

Argh no, supper is dreadful too! Too much pppppppp sound.

Nightboattocairo · 11/08/2015 13:32

I do have a teeny bit of synthesesia with days of the week & some names, perhaps that explains it.

beachdays · 11/08/2015 13:39

Meal is ok but portion is unbearable. Or worse, a helping of something. No, no, no

RoboticSealpup · 11/08/2015 19:28

Yeah, helping!! Gross. I'm starting to realise I dislike quite a few words. I also don't like "rounds of toast".

CigarsofthePharoahs · 11/08/2015 20:35

Dh occasionally invites friends around for 'a good feed'.
Euuuuuugh! Way worse than meal!
Feed? Feed on what? Bleh! Ach!

MuddhaOfSuburbia · 11/08/2015 20:39

MuddhaOfSuburbia · 11/08/2015 20:40

Breakfast lunch and tea are ok

Dinner is treading a fine line and supper is QUITE beyond the pale

SanityClause · 11/08/2015 20:45

timefortiggy · 11/08/2015 20:45

Nom nom actually makes me feel ill Confused

SylvanianCaracal · 11/08/2015 20:45

Yes I hate "meal" too, even though I find myself using it and then shudder. There is something kind of grabby sounding about it (maybe because it features so much in ads and "deals" bleurgh)

Also rounds of toast, makes me fume! What the hell does it mean? Is a round of toast one piece of toast, or some other secret number (like a brace of pheasants)? It's a bit like the confusion I feel over "troops".

SanityClause · 11/08/2015 20:46

Actually, DH has just reminded me that we know someone who occasionally invites us out for a "light bite".

Are your teeth itching, yet?
