To have spent yesterday afternoon at the pub with DCs?

We got the train to our nearest seaside town. Not posh and certainly some of the pubs are not places you'd want to take kids, but after a long walk along the seafront we stopped at a standard chain pub with a pleasant garden, for a drink.

DCs had a refillable soft drink and DH & I had a pint of beer each. Dc's thought all their Christmases had come at once with unlimited fizzy drinks and we passed a very pleasant afternoon while the adults had another beer...and then another and DCs were back and forward to the drinks machine..

DCs weren't running wild, in fact they sat (in the shade) chatting and laughing with us for nearly 3 hours.

I know they had too much sugar and we were drinking alcohol in front of them Shock but AIBU to think this was a very civilised way to spend a sunny Sunday afternoon?

why do you need other peoples approval ?
Its up to you what your dc eat drink etc
but for what its worth sounds lovely afternoon , and frankly if Dc have a one afternoon of fizzy drinks the world doesn't end :)

sebsmummy1 · 10/08/2015 13:42

The only thing I might judge is the bit about one beer after another. Was it two beers each or more? Were you, a woman, drinking beer out of a pint glass (that might get you judged). Did you post photos on Facebook?

usualsuspect333 · 10/08/2015 13:43

Your sister judged you for the fizzy pop?

Lol at kids drinking water in a pub garden.

thornrose · 10/08/2015 13:45

I thought the sister objected to the fizzy drinks, not the afternoon in the pub!

Littlecaf · 10/08/2015 13:47

There are plenty of people who would sneer at you but I'm sure if most people dig into there family lives they will find at some point we have done something similar.

My DM has stories about sitting outside the pub while her parents were in it. Only once or twice a year though. We used to go almost every Saturday after my DF had played cricket. I have some lovely memories of being in pub beer gardens playing with friends while our DParents were inside. No one was ever irresponsible or drunk, just enjoying being sociable. You go for it.

GlitzAndGigglesx · 10/08/2015 13:48

Sounds like fun was had! I spent many hours in beer gardens as a child and loved it because some of the drunk people would give us pound coins to go and waste on those gambling machines Grin

shovetheholly · 10/08/2015 13:52

I am confused. How is being in the pub relevant? It seems like the real question is: 'Am I unreasonable to give my kids pints of fizzy drinks one afternoon?'

If so, my answer would be, I am sure that no lasting damage was done. I was actually put off fizzy drinks for life after an unfortunate binge drinking episode on Panda pops at a school disco age 7. The first - and thankfully only - time I have vommed all over a 'date'.

DurhamDurham · 10/08/2015 13:52

Sounds like a lovely one-off fun family day....if you had them in the pub on a daily basis I might judge but it sounds like you all had a great time, sitting and having a laugh together. Some people just like to moan whatever the reason Smile

mumeeee · 10/08/2015 13:55

YANBU. Sounds like you all had a lovely afternoon. We were quite srtict with sugury drinks when our girls were children. We didn't have them in the house but we would always let them have them when we were on a day out.

AuntieDee · 10/08/2015 13:55

I go to the pub to get away from children.

FanOfHermione · 10/08/2015 13:56

Well as you are asking .... no that sounds a hell way to me to spend a perfectly nice afternoon.
You wouldn't have found me drinking 3 or 4 pints of beers in front of the dcs. And you wouldn't have seen me happy to have my dcs having so much fizzy drinks in one go.
And I've never done anything like this, nor has DH as a child, as adults or whatever else you can think about)

I'm not sure why you are asking. For me both the drinking to excess in front of the dcs and the excess sugary drinks for the dcs woud be a No-No.

Now that I've judged you as you wanted to as per your OP, care to explain why you actually asked the question?

Or is it that you are hoping to be able to judge people who will tell yu that they would never do that??? ConfusedConfused

TenForward82 · 10/08/2015 13:59

Fanof, she said her sister judged her. RTFT.

OP, as long as you didn't give the kids beer, I think you're good Wink

fanof is it boring being so perfect?

usualsuspect333 · 10/08/2015 14:02

Some people like to traipse around NT properties, drinking organic water and elderflower cordial.

Some people like to sit in pub gardens drinking beer and fizzy pop.

Different strokes. I know which one I'd prefer though. Grin

TheoriginalLEM · 10/08/2015 14:05

I like both usual, i love a bit of elderflower and have tried and failed to replace my evening glass of plonk with elderflower fizz! Love an English Heritage house and if i get to call in the pub on the way home, that is a result!

I assume you were outside? No pubs I know allow children in. For obvious reasons

usualsuspect333 · 10/08/2015 14:08

Most seaside pub gardens are very child friendly, would seem a bit odd if there were no children in them.

ProcrastinatorGeneral · 10/08/2015 14:09

I'm a bit jealous. Out of my three children one refuses to drink fizzy and another would turn into a hyperbouncyooooohshinylooooooookit monster after more than half a glass of fizzy pop so that plan wouldn't have worked.

Glad you had a nice time :o

Littlecaf · 10/08/2015 18:20

We went to National Trust properties too and were not allowed to watch ITV so a few hours in a pub over a summer evened it out. Grin

youarekiddingme · 10/08/2015 18:31

YANBU. Sounds lovely. I remember days out in the new forest as a child in beer gardens. Back then before the health and safety police we played on slippery moss covered wooden constructions, threw ourselves around bouncy castles and flung our selfs across trampolines and drunk panda pops that usually were things like blue raspberry cola!
