To think the wasps this Summer are out of control!

We've had lovely sunny weather the past few days and so we have bee making the most of it and attempting picnics, BBQs and just general meals in the garden. Every time we seem to be plagued by wasps! I really don't remember them being so bad the last few years. I hate them! I don't know how to repel them and it's ruining some otherwise lovely meals! Is anyone else experiencing this or do they just single me out?!

They're right bastards this year.

I got stung yesterday, and I didn't even move for it to sting me. My arms still tingling this morning from it.

Useless bastards. Probably getting me back from saving bees Hmm

Phoenix0x0 · 09/08/2015 08:25

Our garden is inundated (we live in the SE).

This isn't helped by the fact the NDN have a wasps nest cannot fathom why they are not doing anything about it and we have a plum tree....AKA wasp heaven.

This means that the bastard wasps, eat the fruit and wiz past the front of our garden to return to their nest (which is in their loft)...making it pointless to use the garden at the moment!

Yesterday, we were eating at a restaurant(inside) and then the wasps came, which resulted in lots of arms flaps/moving plates and moving tables. Cannot stand the damn things...arghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

LooseSeal · 09/08/2015 08:27

I'm in the SE and have encountered plenty of the stripy bastards, but I don't think it's any worse than usual, although a poor child at DDs holiday club got stung on the lip by one Shock. If the weather stays mild they'll hang around until October here.

I'm off to northern France next week, so not that far from me as the crow flies, and I'm thinking of getting one of those traps to hang outside the caravan.

UsedToBeAPaxmanFan · 09/08/2015 08:30

We have wasps aplenty here (East Anglia). Eating outside over the last few weeks has been a right pain.

Wasps eat wood in order to build nests, and then switch to sweet stuff. I think the whole process has been later than usual this year - our beer traps usually are effective from July onwards but the buggers are still trying to chomp their way through our garden table and refuse to be distracted. No stings so far though.

TheTravellingLemon · 09/08/2015 08:33

I was saying this just the other day. We had to abandon a picnic in the park because there were so many. Not just one or two lazily buzzing over to look at the sandwiches, but loads and loads. There was no way we could eat outside because I bloody hate them.

frostyfingers · 09/08/2015 08:34

We have a fruit cage and have to dodge the wasps to pick the blackberries. I got stung on the finger a couple of days ago and boy does it hurt. Definitely didn't have them last year & can't find a nest so will wear gloves next time.

dementedma · 09/08/2015 08:34

Not a single wasp here in central Scotland. At last, a benefit for the truly shite summer we have endured. No butterflies either thoughSad. Praying that the "summer" will also impact on the usal influx of massive autumn spiders...

Bakeoffcake · 09/08/2015 08:40

They always come out in August, I'm allergic to them so observe them very closely.

They are nasty little fuckers and I don't understand why they even exist.

Bakeoffcake · 09/08/2015 08:41

I'm on the south coast by the way.

Iagreewithmrsdevere · 09/08/2015 08:42

We are inundated, one of the stripy cunts stung me while I was minding my own business sitting on the sofa the other day, could have been worse I had DS and DD either side of me and the fallout would have been horrendous if it had got one of them, we would never hear the end of it. What do the fuckers contribute exactly? Even mosquitoes are needed (I think they fertilise cocoa plants but I could be wrong) What do wasps DO???? Stripy bollocked bastards.

Skeppers · 09/08/2015 08:48

Yep, South Coast here too. Have had to abandon pub gardens on warm days. Normally they don't bother me, as long as they mind their own business, but they seem particularly aggro this year; flying right into my face/eyes, rather than idly buzzing around. I HATE HATE HATE them!

ObiWanCannoli · 09/08/2015 08:52

I'm allergic to wasps and the dc stood in a nest last summer, we had to get the council extiminator for three nests in the roof. Loads of nests in the undergrowth and wooded areas.

We are North East Scotland and this year I may have seen one. I'm happy about that but the ticks and midges have been terrible.

I'm praying for a hard frost in May to make sure everything annoying is limited in number and I'm also praying for a hot summer or a warm one. It's been cold and dreich summer this year.

Crosbybeach · 09/08/2015 08:53

Lots of bees here, finally, it's been a cold summer here so there have only been a few about before. Wasps, saw my first one yesterday.

fourtothedozen · 09/08/2015 08:53

I haven't seen a single wasp this summer. One of the few advantages living in SCotland and having crap weather.

BuggerLumpsAnnoyed · 09/08/2015 09:00

And they don't piss of when you shoo them away!

DS left a narrow cup with a bit of Orange juice in the garden. About 20 wasps were dead in it the next day. Best wasp killer ever. (We can kill wasps right...I've not just said something taboo? Can never keep up with what it's ok to hate)

Iggly · 09/08/2015 09:02

They all come out at this time of year as their natural food sources diminish. Happens every year.... I do think last year was a quiet year for wasps

FluffyPersian · 09/08/2015 09:05

There seem to be absolutely LOADS in Hampshire / Berkshire...

I've been out and about doing stuff (on garden leave) .. Went to National Trust places in Wiltshire with my Mother - Loads of wasps in the cafe and outside the cafe..

Went to a pub with my friend in Berkshire... LOADS of the buggers... I even mentioned it to the waiter when we settled up the bill and he said 'Yeah, sorry about that (not his fault) 'We've already had 8 nests removed this year.. we don't know where they're coming from.. we now think it's underground'...

Went to a Farm Shop in Hampshire... I walked in to see 3-4 of them flying round the shop and one seemed to aim straight for my head... I freaked out and ran out the shop Confused.

I hate them.. buzzy little bastards... There seem to be so many around at the moment... I'd kill them all, but I believe they release a pheromone that calls for help to other wasps?

WeAllHaveWings · 09/08/2015 09:06

The Only silver lining on the crap scottish summer this year is I haven't seen a single wasp. Although i have seen a lot of large bumble bees, but don't mind them.

WeAllHaveWings · 09/08/2015 09:08

Maybe all the scottish wasps have holidayed down south this year?

prettybird · 09/08/2015 10:22

Not seen any wasps either - also in Scotland Wink

Having said that, the plums haven't ripened yet and the gazillion pears haven't fallen yet from our giant tree. They're usually wasp magnets.

TheCatsMother99 · 09/08/2015 10:24

I haven't seen any.... And I don't want to (hope I haven't jinxed myself now).

They're evil, pointless things... Grrr

nineathena · 09/08/2015 10:41

Flipping shedloads of the vile things. It started the moment it started getting warmer. We have so many.

SideOrderofChips · 09/08/2015 11:04

Saw a wasp for the first time in the garden yesterday (channel islands) but theres been loads up round the ponies :( my niece got stung

MogTheForgetfulCat · 09/08/2015 11:15

We went to Longleat yesterday, swarms of the buggers everywhere - they had traps at various places that were absolutely stuffed with wasps - ugh. But we had been about 2 weeks ago (annual passes) and hadn't seen any, so it must just be that time of year. Hate them Confused - I know they're useful but I had a traumatic childhood experience with wasps and can't be rational about them as a result. Tried hypnosis but it didn't work Confused.

throckenholt · 09/08/2015 14:05

We usually have lots. Last year we had hardly any (it was lovely). This year they are back with a vengeance - they have eaten most of the ripening plums on our tree - we can't get near it Angry. We are in Norfolk.

For the first time ever I saw a wasp nest recently - one the verge of a field - a small whole in the ground with lots of wasps going in and out.
