To think the wasps this Summer are out of control!

We've had lovely sunny weather the past few days and so we have bee making the most of it and attempting picnics, BBQs and just general meals in the garden. Every time we seem to be plagued by wasps! I really don't remember them being so bad the last few years. I hate them! I don't know how to repel them and it's ruining some otherwise lovely meals! Is anyone else experiencing this or do they just single me out?!

Barely seen any all summer, been cold here though (West Yorks).
Lots of bees though.
It was the same last year, until September, then they seemed to be everywhere.

pinksummer · 08/08/2015 21:53

I'm South East and they are everywhere. I can't open my front door without one coming in. Every friends garden I've been in recently is the same.

Hulababy · 08/08/2015 21:55

Noticed them only since Wednesday. Sat outside pub lunchtime Wednesday and wasps abundant. And this evening sat outside friend's campervan with drinks - wasps again. First time this year.

BumpTheElephant · 08/08/2015 22:50

I've seen hardly any wasps this year. Plenty of bees in our garden though which I'm very pleased about.

DeeWe · 08/08/2015 22:53

None here in the south east

FFSletmechangemyname · 08/08/2015 23:04

I hadn't see any until today, wee entry a BBQ and there were loads and I got stung Angry. The fucker went up my trouser leg and stung me I had to pull it out of my knee.

I'm laying here and it's still hurting. Next time I see one I'm running Grin

FFSletmechangemyname · 08/08/2015 23:04

We went to

Parrish · 08/08/2015 23:06

No wasps here.

suzanneyeswecan · 08/08/2015 23:07

Also south east, I've seen a few extra bee's this year, bumble bee's especially but I've not seen a wasp for years

JohnCusacksWife · 08/08/2015 23:12

Nary a wasp here. Buts that prob because it's barely got about 11 degrees all summer!

Noseypoke · 08/08/2015 23:13

I'm in Scotland and I have not seen a single wasp this summer. The weather has been hideous!

Pumpkinette · 08/08/2015 23:21

I have seen 1 bee and not a single wasp this 'summer'. The weather has been really bad where I live this year. I suppose the lack of wasps has been the highlight of the non stop rain summer.

Pedestriana · 08/08/2015 23:26

I'm in the South (ish) and we've a nest very near us. The wasps come and go in the garden and haven't bothered us at all though. No need for traps, etc.
They're actually very useful as they eat lots of destructive bugs, though they will nibble at wooden fences to help build their nests.

ShadowsCollideCantLogInToMN · 08/08/2015 23:45

Oh, I remember wasps being really bad when I was a child (that is, there were loads of wasps, not that wasps were hovering around taking drugs and mugging people). We used to go to a holiday centre every summer (Mosney), and in the amusement park area, there were massive swarms of wasps around every rubbish bin (hankering after the abundance of candyfloss in every bin, no doubt). Putting something in the bin was more frightening than going on the Space Roundup. (Any Irish MNers will know of what I speak Grin) It was one of those Gravitron style rides where you're spun around and the centrifugal force holds you in place. Anyway, that was a tangent.

I actually haven't seen a single wasp this summer. Which is really weird, come to think of it.

StrumpersPlunkett · 08/08/2015 23:49

Loads here. East Anglia
Had my very first sting today really hurt!?!?!

DancingDinosaur · 08/08/2015 23:53

South east. Not seen any.

YeOldeTrout · 09/08/2015 07:00

funny, I saw my first of the summer yesterday too.

WitchofScots · 09/08/2015 07:08

We haven't seen any in deepest Cornwall. Long may it continue, horrible things.

Koalafications · 09/08/2015 07:18

They are such pests and do seem to be everywhere at the minute.

Can we not just get rid of wasps entirely and just give bumblebees? The wasp's cuter, fluffier and friendlier cousin?

Koalafications · 09/08/2015 07:19

*have bumblebees

GallopingFoxley · 09/08/2015 07:20

In the SE and not seen one

sebsmummy1 · 09/08/2015 07:24

In the south and only saw them when we are our lunch outside - no coincidence there I don't think! Otherwise we've had tons of bees this year but hardly any wasps.

I'm going to sound irritatingly sensible but I think the key is to be organised. If you're going to be eating al fresco then have a plan in place for how your going to deal with wasps. There are lots of products available, you just have to plan better.

patterkiller · 09/08/2015 07:28

No wasps here, north east England, lots of happy bees in the garden though.

Lonecatwithkitten · 09/08/2015 07:31

No wasps here in Berkshire, but lots of bees. I deliberately plant to encourage the bees as I understood wasps and bees do not like to coexist. So have budlea, lavender and many other flowers to encourage the bees.

ihatethecold · 09/08/2015 08:12

We are inundated with them.
They have made 1cm holes in the sleepers. The drilled out wood sits in piles on the patio every morning.
The dogs keep trying to catch them and eat them!
Loads come into the house all the time.
It's driving me insane.
