Just that! I think it waaaaay too young but AIBU?

You can still play sport, be out side AND have an iPhone btw.

DD started with an old brick phone at 10 - she calls her grandparents and her father (we are not together).

However, her phone had signal issues and the quality of the calls were poor as it would cut out or be crackly.

I got her an iPhone 5c (not the latest) for her 11th birthday with several responsibilities tied to it. She knows she will lose it for any unsavoury behaviour. She is off to high school in September so it will be useful as she intends to join activity clubs so can let me know when she's expected to be home. Plus it is insured for everything, but she's warned if it is lost or damaged through silly behaviour the replacement will be sold to pay off her contract.

We are intending to be incredibly strict with it, but it is her opportunity to show us that she is mature enough to handle the responsibility. I think she's ready, but I know if she was like some of her friends, I would be more hesitant to get one.

Depends on the maturity of the child.

2 of mine have iPhones (10 & 12). When I looked at getting them phones there was no difference in price whether it was an iPhone or not (contract), so we went for iPhones. We can keep an eye on them as they have been synced with my phone and also on laptop. If they had an android or other smart phone I wouldn't be able to monitor them.
