She doesn't walk to school she is never on her own, plays around the house as has friends living near so in fact has little need for the phone function. I susoect the mother has more need to tell her mates that her DD has one more than anything Hmm

I would if I had the money or if it was a Xmas or birthday present.I bought ds a smart phone.

Carrie5608 · 03/08/2015 15:09

What about an I pod. A lot of 9 year olds have these. They are much cheaper than the I phone but you can still use Whats app, viber, snap chat etc from your home if you have Wifi.

Dd (10) has this plus an old brick type phone with no camera and PAYG for when she gets the bus somewhere.

JacquesHammer · 03/08/2015 15:09

seveneleven it doesn't need to be an either/or though?

This morning DD has watched a nature programme on her ipad, then drawn some of the things she saw. She's currently playing with her Playmobil zoo with music playing from her phone.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 03/08/2015 15:10

If you roll your eyes any more Jackie you'll end up looking like one of those dolls with wonky eyes you see in charity shopsWink

JakieOH · 03/08/2015 15:14

She's not my child (lucky her Wink but I know DP thinks the same as I do. I'd suggest if she wants an I pod or something like that she gives her little sister the I pad, but what do I know Wink other than I'll not be paying for it this time!

You know how I like a tut and huff madam, it's not the same without an eyeroll Hmm

19lottie82 but I didn't mention my choices with regards to giving my 8 year old an iPhone on an Internet forum. The OP did, and I gave my opinion in response to that.

19lottie82 · 03/08/2015 16:00

NickiFury, Yes, I know that. I was talking about posters in this thread, in general.

Twinkie1 · 03/08/2015 16:01

DS 10 has my old 5s in giff gaff as we like him to have a phone when he is out in the village with his friends.

It costs next to nothing so I really don't know nerdy and the dramatic tone of the OP.

Theas18 · 03/08/2015 16:12

my only worry if I saw this ( apart from maybe more money than sense if it was a new one- hand me down 4 or 5 can't see an issue with after all kids have tablets and MP3 players) would be " I do hope the parents have disabled the internet and put decent restrictions on it"...

Be actually for restrictions etc it's probably easier to set up than android.

(and I hope we don't get threads ilke the recent one about a just 13yr old sending indecent images etc at age 9)

UrethraFranklin1 · 03/08/2015 16:13

Nobody needs an iphone.

But if its not your 9 year old or your iphone, what's it to you?

Glitteryarse · 03/08/2015 16:23

pink I can see your point. But you don't need to feel sad Grin

The pram was a silver cross one and expensive. She would have been happy with a cheap plastic one. I don't want her getting used to big expensive gifts for no reason. She is only 2 and gets small treats daily eg, comics, bubbles, stickers .. She doesn't need a wopping great big springy silver cross carrage taking my hall way up

Sallystyle · 03/08/2015 16:27

If I could afford it, I would have no problem with it.

I don't care if other parents want to buy their young child an iPhone.

Mine had iPod touches at that age because they had no need for a phone. I doubt many 9 year olds do, but it isn't something I feel judgy about.

TantrumsAndBalloons · 03/08/2015 16:32

Surely it's irrelevant what the item is.

If you can't afford a £500 item you can't afford.

Some children do have iPhones, some have Samsung phones, some have basic brick Argos phones.

Doesn't matter. If you can't afford it, that's it.

verystressedmum · 03/08/2015 16:41

I've got 2 old iPhone 4s's in the house but I wouldn't give one to ds who is 8 as he doesn't need one-he's got no one to call or text. He got an iPad mini for Christmas so he uses that for games etc he was 7.5 when he got the iPad, I don't see a problem with that.
If you don't want your child to have one don't buy them one.

pinktrufflechoc · 03/08/2015 16:41

Dads do spoil their DDs though Smile

Sorry if I sounded OTT - it brought back some nice memories of my dad!

MadamArcatiAgain · 03/08/2015 16:43

BIL and SIL have a miserable time at Christmas scrimping and saving and worrying about money. Then it's all over in one day. And they boys still act up
They are doing it because they enjoy making their children happy, not to make them behave better Hmm

JakieOH · 03/08/2015 17:01

Because DPs exw wants him to buy his DD one, knowing full well he can't and no doubt expecting that I will, again, be guilted into it. I have explained unthread urethra

I wasn't aware there was a dramatic tone perhaps the explanation mark appears that way but I can assure you, there is no drama. I was just wondering what the consensus was.

Looks like IABU to think 9 is too young for an i phone but NBU to refuse to buy a brand new one.

To put another slant on it - my dad used to buy me expensive gifts at Xmas and birthdays. It was the 70's and divorce was still a big thing . I felt really shit about it but having something really nice that my mates either didn't have or had already made me feel just that bit better iykwim? Let her buy it .

UrethraFranklin1 · 03/08/2015 18:10

If your dp's ex wants him to buy something for his kid that he can neither afford or even want to, there is a handy word for that. NO.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 03/08/2015 18:11

Sorry, I thought SHE wanted to buy the phone . Just say no!

Timetoask · 03/08/2015 18:14

Put it this way, if at 9 this child is getting at iPhone, what on earth will he/she expect at 15?
Let's stop spoiling our kids and get them to appreciate things.
At 9 he/she needs to be out playing sport, in reading books, using their brain.

pinktrufflechoc · 03/08/2015 18:15

Having things isn't synonymous with not appreciating them.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 03/08/2015 18:17

Some years ds gets huge presents like a new BMX or a lap top, last year he had a tennis racket. You don't have to keep buying more and more expensive things as they get older.
