to think Peacocks (the shop) is underrated?

I don't know if this applies everywhere, but round these 'ere parts it's considered to be just about ahead of bon marché in the fashion stakes.

Yet every year I pick up the most amazing, flattering dresses in their sales. They always fit me like a glove and look lovely.

Last night I finally got a chance to wear the dress I picked up in their sale a few weeks back, and I got non-stop compliments all night. Nobody believed it was from Peacocks. It was £7!

AIBU in thinking they don't deserve the bad rep they seem to have?

P.S I don't work for them, honest.

I like peacocks. Have a few dresses from there and they've lasted well for years! I was wearing one yesterday that I'd bought before I had my first child. It isn't a maternity dress but a floaty summer dress I wear with leggings. I wore it through most of my pregnancies with both of my kids and am still wearing it now! Think I've had it about four or five years!

LovelySpread · 03/08/2015 09:45

Love them! I'm very tall and their maxi dresses are proper long. Nice patterns too.

KitKat1985 · 03/08/2015 09:54

YANBU OP. I also think a lot of Primark and George clothes have been really nice recently. The only thing is the quality of them isn't always great and so they don't always last that long, but on the positive side then you get to go clothes shopping again. Grin Also if you are buying kids clothes they will inevitably get stained or grown out of so quickly you don't really need longevity.

On a side point (sorry OP - not trying to thread hijack) but does anyone else think that Next has been awful this year? I have some vouchers for them which I'm struggling to spend as I can't find anything I like there.

Mrsjayy · 03/08/2015 10:12

I hate next clothes their tops/blouses squash me so i look like i have 1 boob Hmm the pettite trousers are often to tight and too long although I really like their shoes im only a 2 and their girls lace ups are really comfy

TheHormonalHooker · 03/08/2015 10:15

YANBU.

They're online and very often their delivery is free or 99p. Sign up for their newsletters and you'll get frequent offers too.

The one in Newton Abbot is horrifying but perhaps it's regional.

FurtherSupport · 03/08/2015 11:31

I have a very high flying, cash rich, time short friend. She's lovely but has plenty of cash and likes to spend it on expensive clothes and posh labels.

She and her mum share a love of shopping but friend has less time for it. Before a holiday with friends from work (equally high flying and well dressed) friend charged her mum with buying her a whole new holiday wardrobe, she got loads of beautiful swim suits and dresses. Friends were very impressed and kept asking about the clothes.

Friend told them her mum had found them in a little boutique "boutique de peaco" (say it out loud!)

It was only after the holiday that her mother came clean and friend has been a convert ever since. Previously she wouldn't have crossed the threshold.

zukiecat · 03/08/2015 11:35

We don't have a Peacocks here, we did for a year or two but it closed down.

I do have, however a beautiful maxi dress that I ordered online.

I love wearing it and have had lots of compliments on it.

ALittleFaith · 03/08/2015 11:37

My DD is on the small side (25% centile) and they're clothes fit her brilliantly. She's been living in shorts from Peacocks lately. Tried some H&M ones and they just fall down!

I've had a few nice 'basics' from there recently too - a hat, leggings, trousers.

I agree Next has really gone off the boil. It was my favourite shop for a long time but not these days!

BolshierAyraStark · 03/08/2015 11:40

YANBU, got a gorgeous top from there last week for a tenner.

GooodMythicalMorning · 03/08/2015 11:41

Love it. Yes dresses are great and their leggings are good too. Nice length for the long of leg. Belts are a bit rubbish but easy to swap so not a problem. Kids clothes are a bit hit n miss though.

BeautifulBatman · 03/08/2015 11:42

Yanbu. It's definitely worth a scrummage through. I bought a pair of aviator style sunglasses from there last year - £3!! And they were lovely Smile

DadfromUncle · 03/08/2015 11:47

YANBU I took DD (7) in there for an emergency sunhat and sunglasses.

ExDp (her Mum) was very complimentary about both items which is astounding for anything I do/buy. She gets all DDs stuff from John Lewis or M&S - I don't think she knows that any other shops exist.

The sunhat is fab BTW.

Szeli · 03/08/2015 11:48

Adult stuff is majorly overpriced except the swimwear and the mens stuff washes really badly.

kids stuff tho is fab. really well priced, washes great, great designs just a little small

stripytees · 03/08/2015 11:51

The whole shop smells a bit plasticky from all the horrible materials and the staff is usually rude. No thanks.

OstentatiousBreastfeeder · 03/08/2015 12:45

I have their sunglasses too! You couldn't pick them out of a crowd of more expensive ones. £3 - bargain.

I use them more than the £200 pair of Ray Bans dh bought me that I'm too scared to wear incase I break them Hmm

Poutintrout · 03/08/2015 12:49

I bought a pair of jeans there and was happy with the fit etc. A few weeks later they were having an online 25% off promotion so I decided to buy another two pairs of the same jeans because they were such a bargain. Said jeans arrived and not one of the three pairs of jeans (from in store or online) were the same size though apparently they were all a size 12. I couldn't fit into one pair at all and could only just fit into another pair.

I had stupidly just assumed that they would fit and had lazily stashed them into my wardrobe. It was weeks later that I discovered the various "sizes". I have to say though that I took them into my local store not expecting a good outcome because it had been so long since my purchase and I had no paper work (just the jeans with the tags still on) and the manager let me swap them for some jeans that did fit. I was really surprised and can't fault the customer service, though perhaps the quality control of the clothes leaves a bit to be desired!

GuiltyAsAGirlCanBe · 03/08/2015 12:50

I bought the perfect pair of skinny jeans there recently. Liked them so much I went back and got them in black as well. Really flattering and just the right amount of stretch.

noeffingidea · 03/08/2015 12:51

I like peacocks. I've bought quite a bit for myself from there. I agree about the children's clothes fitting slimmer children, I've bought quite a few things for my younger 2 over the years.

DownWithThisTypeOfThing · 03/08/2015 13:01

I've had a few bits from there. They look nice, but quality isn't great - the only things I've had which have lasted have been things I've handwashed - chiffon type material. I bought a pair of jeans once and they shrunk when washed and were an inch above my ankles.

I know it's cheap, but cost per wear tends to be quite high. Some people would be fine with that.

MrsMummyPig · 03/08/2015 13:38

I think the stock in stores varies. The one in our nearest small town is rubbish. Never seem to have anything nice and looks like a bomb has hit it but the bigger one in a nearby city has some nice stuff and the shop itself looks nicer and more inviting.

Birdsgottafly · 03/08/2015 13:44

It's a shame that they don't do a "premium" range, so their T-Shirts last longer, they do some lovely prints.

I've had maxi dresses and accessories from there and people (including my DDs) are always surprised when I tell them were they're from.

DownWithThisTypeOfThing · 03/08/2015 14:03

Bird they did a Pearl Lowe range for a while that looked lovely in the magazines but no idea what the quality was like as it was always sold out!

scatterthenuns · 03/08/2015 14:07

Knickers at Peacocks are great. I have some teeny, tiny thongs that DH loves!
