To go off sick for the rest of my notice period

oldguygirl · 02/08/2015 20:01

I have a new job, I have 2 weeks of my notice left to do.
I am totally sick of the place, I have had ongoing bullying issues which still continue despite me working my notice.
I have had the year from hell and I have had bad anxiety issues, I'm a lot better as I have had cbt and counselling and dealing with things better.
But I am dreading going to work tomorrow

That sounds really tough. At my last employer they didn't do sick pay once you were in notice period so check that before you make any decisions.

Spartans · 02/08/2015 20:02

Could it affect your new job?

Duckdeamon · 02/08/2015 20:02

They might put sick leave details on your reference?

oldguygirl · 02/08/2015 20:10

References are done and sorted. I would get paid, just completely sick of it

Any annual leave left?

Bluecheese22 · 02/08/2015 20:11

Sod them, have a couple of weeks to get your head together and enjoy your fresh start!

oldguygirl · 02/08/2015 20:22

I actually have 3 weeks left , the last week I am taking as leave. I would have to get signed off by my doctor which I guess I could do. Part of me tells me to just get my head down and get on with it and the other is just dreading it. Sunday night blues!

I be inclined to go with the head down and get on with it approach. You have 10 days left and after tomorrow you will be into single figures.

JohnCusacksWife · 02/08/2015 20:27

In order to get signed off work you should be either physically or mentally incapable of doing your job and/or be at risk of infecting your colleagues. If neither of those is true and you just don't want to go to work then YABU.

ImperialBlether · 02/08/2015 20:29

I would think 'fuck them' and go to the doctor for a note and stay off. Don't forget to say nothing on social media.

ThoseAwfulCurtains · 02/08/2015 20:29

Can you negotiate unpaid leave of absence?

Kayden · 02/08/2015 20:39

Can you not negotiate them letting you go sooner?

Moonraker37 · 02/08/2015 20:54

You poor thing, think we've all had a job we hate at various points. BUT if you are really dreading it and feel totally uncomfortable at work then sod it, don't go in, get signed off. You sound as though you need to be anyway due to stress. Congrats on the new job and having the courage to make the change rather than stay put and complain. Hope it goes well for you.

oldguygirl · 02/08/2015 20:56

I will see how I get on tomorrow.thanks

I'd call in sick, you can have a week in the UK without a note, can't you?

If you explained the bullying the doc would write you a note without question.

What do you owe them? They've done nothing to help you sort the problem.

I doubt your new employer would care about your last few weeks in an old job.

Lipstickandlashes · 02/08/2015 21:10

It sounds horribly tough.

But I'd be inclined to get my head down, plan a lovely treat for yourself every evening, and cross off the days.

I was in a similar situation and it was so, so hard but I felt strong enough to take on the world when I toughed out my notice.

oldguygirl · 02/08/2015 21:13

And what do I say to my manager? Totally sick of being negative

OP posts:
WallyBantersJunkBox · 02/08/2015 21:14

You don't say anything. Call in and say you are under the weather and won't make it. You will go to the doctors and update.

Thudercatsrule · 02/08/2015 21:19

Call in sick first thing, then get to the docs and get them to sign you off for the last 2 weeks!

TiredButFine · 02/08/2015 21:20

I've been there- it's really tough.
I think you should go in tomorrow. If you can't face Tuesday, go off sick then.
You can't let this anxiety beat you. You're going- there's nothing they can do. Become very very annoying, see how many times a day you can say "I'm leaving in two weeks!" Actually count it up on a post it!

JohnCusacksWife · 02/08/2015 21:23

If you're worried about what to say to your manager then, to me, that means you know there's no valid reason to stay off. It's 2 weeks. Go in, do a good job and show them what they're going to lose.

LilMissSunshine9 · 02/08/2015 21:45

oh dear I recently went through my role being made redundant - slightly different situation but had to work 1 month notice period. I took myself off the floor and worked in a small meeting room for most of it can you do something like that?

BigChocFrenzy · 02/08/2015 22:41

I'm totally against people throwing sickies to go to interviews, social events etc
However, bullying is unacceptable.
It violates the conditions of employment. It is very stressful, affects your mental well-being and can lead to physical problems too.

Your employer is required to provide a safe and healthy working environment, so they have failed to fulfill their side of the contract.

Go to your GP tomorrow, get signed off for the rest if your notice period
This will allow you to recover and start your new job in a healthy frame of mind, physically rested.
Your new employer is entitled to expect a new employee to be rested and healthy

scarlets · 02/08/2015 23:45

You've been bullied there, which is awful, and you're genuinely stressed. Yanbu. I suggest that you go in tomorrow and see how you feel. If it's horrid, and not just the Monday blues, don't return on Tues.

oldguygirl · 03/08/2015 17:12

thanks for your replies. Well despite a panic attack and tears I got there and got through the day.
I am on leave on Friday so I just need to keep going and try and get on with it. And if its so bad - I can go home!!
Thanks x
