We should feel ashamed.

OP posts:

And again (not to ghostys) to reiterate the point that illegal immigrants get NOTHING. Not a sausage. Asylum Seekers get a low level of support whilst their case is heard. If they're refused then they can leave, go 'underground' or hope that they get Exceptional Leave to Remain.

Proving which was the last country they travelled through to the point where that country will accept them is a different problem. If someone claims asylum in Luton, having entered the UK illegally, how do you prove where they arrived from? The French aren't going to accept them. What do you do then?

redbinneo · 02/08/2015 20:46

Ghosty:
These people are swarming over our borders. I suspect that my house is as acceptable to them as yours.

GiddyOnZackHunt · 02/08/2015 20:49

Can't you be more original red? Nowhere have I said, let 'em all in. I will argue against racism and ignorance though. There are without doubt a lot of people claiming asylum who have no grounds whatsoever to do so. I've met them. But there are some who would break your heart with their (true) stories and I am glad to have been able to help them personally.

ghostyslovesheep · 02/08/2015 20:51

Red you need new material

this thread has been rather measured and interesting - maybe read it and join in - nicely

ghostyslovesheep · 02/08/2015 20:52

hard to say which countries you travelled through when you are hauled up in a crate in the dark with little or no air

redbinneo · 02/08/2015 20:53

Giddy: If you want to help the swarm. that is entirely up to you. I don't, and I object to the taxes that are extorted from me being used for this purpose.

Superexcited · 02/08/2015 20:55

I'm sure I have read somewhere (possibly the guardian) that failed asylum seekers with children will still get some financial support, just a reduced amount. The support they will get will be based on the children and the adult element will be cut. I don't understand the hysteria, we will still be ensuring that there is money to feed the children of failed asylum seekers. British citizens who are in poverty are also having their benefits cut significantly, being sanctioned etc.
Once they have failed to gain asylum it has been decided that they did not have the grounds to be here so why should we continue to provide them with money? It would be better to keep them in a detention centre, feed them and deport them ASAP, no need for any cash.

GiddyOnZackHunt · 02/08/2015 20:56

Heigh ho, we live in a democracy so you can't say your taxes are extorted really. Doesn't matter what I want, the elected government will do as it chooses.

redbinneo · 02/08/2015 20:57

Ghosty:
Wow, people are travelling thousands of miles to abuse our benefits system, and you think we should be nice?

ghostyslovesheep · 02/08/2015 20:58

you can always leave Red - become an immigrant

The Guardian link up thread doesn't say 'failed' AS - just AS

redbinneo · 02/08/2015 21:00

Ghosty: do you mean emigrant?

JohnCusacksWife · 02/08/2015 21:00

I don't feel ashamed that we will not support failed asylum seekers. If they have been deemed not to be asylum seekers then I don't see any reason why they should be supported by the UK taxpayers. It would be lovely if we could support every poor person who wants to come here but we can't.

GiddyOnZackHunt · 02/08/2015 21:01

Is there hysteria Super? Really? I'm keen to question statements like 'deport them ASAP' because it just isn't always that simple logistically or emotionally and I find it very frustrating that people keep on repeating the same simplistic statements without stopping to think about how.

There isn't any easy solution to the problems of the have nots wanting the same as the haves.

ghostyslovesheep · 02/08/2015 21:01

really - well they get more in benefits in France so if that was the case why come here

AS don't GET benefits

Illegal Immigrants don't get benefits

I posted a handy list of who gets what further up - might be worth a read Red

you seem very cross but ill infomed

you can turn the internet off you know

ghostyslovesheep · 02/08/2015 21:02

Just again it's not failed AS just asylum seekers

ghostyslovesheep · 02/08/2015 21:04

ps if they 'stay in France' and get a French passport they can come here anyway AND get benefits Grin

JohnCusacksWife · 02/08/2015 21:08

Ghostly, you are wrong. The proposals relate to removing support from those whose asylum claims have been rejected.

redbinneo · 02/08/2015 21:09

Ghosty,
you are presenting a good argument for us leaving the EU. Thanks.

ghostyslovesheep · 02/08/2015 21:10

this makes no mention of 'failed' www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2015/jul/16/asylum-seekers-with-children-to-see-support-payments-cut

people who have exhausted any appeals and HAVE failed are deported - they don't get public funds

Karoleann · 02/08/2015 21:11

I don't think they should get an appeal. You turn up to your hearing and if unsuccessful you are put on a plane home immediately afterwards. We cannot feed and clothe everyone, I would much rather we spent money on British people, kept out of international affairs and let them sort themselves out.

ghostyslovesheep · 02/08/2015 21:13

anyway Odyssey is on so I'm off x night all

Superexcited · 02/08/2015 21:15

Well if they stay in France they might not be granted a French passport so there is no certainty that they could come here and get benefits. They might have their asylum applications rejected and be sent back to their home country.

Marylou2 · 02/08/2015 21:16

The key point is not that their money has been stopped it's that their asylum claim has been refused. It's time for them to go home on a taxpayer funded flight.

GiddyOnZackHunt · 02/08/2015 21:17

Sigh Karol how many direct flights do you think there are from the UK to Syria? To Somalia?

I don't think people whose claims have been rejected and have no further recourse in law, get any support. They leave or disappear.

IWentAwayIStayedAway · 02/08/2015 21:24

why did the OP not come back to this thread?
