To be worried about dd having the Cervical cancer jab after the fuss about it on here the other day

Supervet · 01/08/2015 03:07

DD is due to have it shortly in school.
I had not heard anything about it and presumed she would have it because cervical cancer is horrid.

Now I am really worried because there was lots of fuss over it the other day on here with many comments about serious side effects. I have now read it has been banned in Japan and there are worries elsewhere.

Can anyone point me in the right direction of accurate none scare mongering information or does anyone have any medical experience in relation to this?

That scaremongering report which was published in the Independent was thoroughly taken to pieces on Radio 4's More or Less. So make sure you're making a decision based on fact rather than scaremongering

mamadoc · 01/08/2015 07:58

I'll tell you what too many people (women) are dying of: cervical cancer

Young women dying and having surgery that increases the risk of premature birth causing damage to their children too.

I will never understand how people can believe that a hypothetical, completely unproven risk from a vaccine outweighs the very real risk from the disease it is made to prevent

CarlaJones · 01/08/2015 07:59

sebsmummy Is LLETZ the same as laser treatment? I had that in my 20s for abnormal cells and had 2dcs in my 30s after 3 first tri mcs. (Which were for a different known reason not related to the laser treatment. )

tvlover1234 · 01/08/2015 07:59

I was one of the first lot of people to have it at school. 2008 and I was year 7 or 8. No side effects. None of my friends had side effects. Except a sore arm lol.

AngieBolen · 01/08/2015 08:21

Sebsmummy I had a LLETZ treatment twice before DC 2&3 and no problems with my cervix during pregnancy. Smile

The horror of cervical cancer is the reason my DD will be having the vaccination. It's not cheep to obtain privately, so I can't imagine the government would be dishing it out if they weren't completely confident it's the right thing to do.

There are those who argue boys should also be offered the vaccination.

Edenviolet · 01/08/2015 08:24

My dd1 (13) will never be having it, she already has health problems (EDS, scoliosis, pectus excavatum and pots) so we don't feel it's a good idea for her

Fluffycloudland77 · 01/08/2015 08:29

I have every vaccination going, never had a side effect from any of them.

I'm a hcp so I have regular Hep vaccs etc and they usually look at my card and say ooh you're due a dip booster and I think well I'm here I may as well have it.

YeOldeTrout · 01/08/2015 08:31

yeah, day of the jab DD went around hugging & mothering her mates. They almost all adopted hysterics & tears in anticipation, honestly the drama. I'm surprised nobody had a panic attack & passed out from the hysterics, field day for Tabloid media!!

DD was fine but said her arm was still sore 2 days later, so be ready for that. I've no regrets, anyway.

Fluffycloudland77 · 01/08/2015 08:34

Oh lord I remember that from our tb vacc.

Supervet · 01/08/2015 08:35

Thank you.

I think itsbloodyraining is referring to this story. www.theguardian.com/uk/2009/sep/28/hpv-cervical-cancer-vaccine-death (Not sure if link will work on phone)

I am normally extremely rational. Dd had her mmr in the middle of the huge fuss about that.

Part of my concern is fertility issues, I was in menopause at 23 and my Mum also had issues so I worry about anything that will increase that risk.

I've also read school only needs child permission not parents although government said permission is preferable but not needed. Some school nurses have been trying to persuade girls to have it when parents have said no. Dd has sn and would be persuaded.

OP posts:
Edenviolet · 01/08/2015 08:39

When we declined it the school referred us to the local school nurse and I had to explain why we didn't want dad to have the vaccination

Edenviolet · 01/08/2015 08:39

Dd even

AngieBolen · 01/08/2015 08:41

I do have a huge issue with children being vaccinated without parental consent though.

I just know DD will have mild hysterics over being injected. I'm glad the drama will be at school and I won't have to deal with it. Wink

SweetCharityBeginsAtHome · 01/08/2015 08:41

Itsbloodyraining can't have been referring to that case super et because that girl had a huge tumour in her chest which tragically but coincidentally killed her immediately after her HPV.

lljkk · 01/08/2015 08:42

@Supervet: she died of a tumour, the jab was coincidence.

SweetCharityBeginsAtHome · 01/08/2015 08:42

Link to report of inquest.

Ikeameatballs · 01/08/2015 08:43

Natalie Morton, the girl in the guardian link had a malignant tumour in her chest infiltrating her heart and lung. Sadly that's what killed her, not the vaccine.

Mrsjayy · 01/08/2015 08:43

Both my dds have had it no side affects at all but there is a chance with every chemical that goes into your body i suppose there is a slim chance of a side effect Iasked my dds if they wanted it we spoke about it they wanted it.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 01/08/2015 08:47

I have a feeling the girl in that story died from an unrelated condition. She had a large, undiagnosed tumour in her chest and could have collapsed and died at any point.

There is a paper which looks at the medical records of children before and after introduction of the hpv vaccine and the diagnosis rates of a large number of conditions. I think there are 1 or 2 conditions where there is a small increase in diagnosis rates after introduction of the vaccine but everything else is unchanged.

angstyaunty · 01/08/2015 08:48

Beaky, the idea that the scientists involved in the Danish study are not aware of statistical analysis is unlikely. Did you read the study, and watch the film? It's only 38 minutes long.
Several vaccines have been withdrawn/ formulation changed over the years, due to safety concerns which only emerged once the vaccines had been in general use for some time. It's possible Gardasil will be one of these. Time will tell.

Supervet · 01/08/2015 08:51

Thank you. Useful to know it wasn't related to the girls death after all. Poor parents either way.

OP posts:
Micah · 01/08/2015 08:53

Natalie Morton, the girl who died in the link above, had an undiagnosed cardiac tumour which was the cause of death, iirc.

happymummyone · 01/08/2015 08:56

I've had it myself, no reaction at all, I'll let my daughter have it.

SisterMoonshine · 01/08/2015 09:02

Didn't Japan ban the MMR?
I don't know if that helps
....or not.

lljkk · 01/08/2015 09:04

I looked at the Danish study before, there were things that bothered me.
There is no statistical analysis in that paper. Confused
There's no statement about competing interests.
They state that the funding is not relevant, it's never not relevant!!
No statement about consent for the patient data to be used in this analysis.
maybe the statements are elsewhere in the journal? Else suggests poor research governance and undermines my confidence in how the data were managed. We all know about Wakeman's cherry-picking and exaggerations, right??
It isn't a 'systematic review' Confused

Yes I write medical papers for a living!
Hey wait, I've got a really basic service evaluation I want to get published somewhere, maybe this is the place.

Does anyone think it's weird that 5 of the 53 pts were competing at national or international level in their sport? Is that typical for teen girls (isn't among the highly sporty 12-13yr olds we know).
