To ask where I can send my 57p?

drspouse · 31/07/2015 20:47

According to the Mirror if all the asylum seekers currently in Calais came into the UK and (highly unlikely) never paid any tax, it would cost each of us 57p.
To save a group of people from some of the most unimaginable horrors in their home countries, I'm more than happy to pay that.
So, where do I sign to pay up (and make it clear I'm happy for them to officially seek asylum and have their claims verified)?

Have you read the thread samsam? I think that's been answered a few times.

swallowed · 01/08/2015 20:26

one big happy.... what? what now?

What? Eh?

Moreshabbythanchic · 01/08/2015 20:30

Too hard for you to understand swallowed?

RichPetunia · 01/08/2015 20:44

I'm of the opinion that the army should be brought in. I won't be donating.

redbinneo · 01/08/2015 20:46

Swallowed: Your post at 19:51 brought a lump to my throat. But what have your lifestyle choices got to do with those people who travel thousands of miles to get to France and then travel through it to claim UK benefits?
The Times had a very interesting article today about the liability of the Kentish County Council for the lives of immigrant children dumped in Kent. The council (i.e. taxpayers) has to pay until they are 25.

swallowed · 01/08/2015 20:55

red I'm not sure why it brought a lump to your throat but, ok!

To answer your question, it doesn't have anything to do with the OP but answered a specific point of element's about skilled migrant workers. Which I felt qualified to answer because I am one.

redbinneo · 01/08/2015 21:00

Swallowed, you migrated FROM the UK, this thread is about people who choose to migrate TO this country. There is a vast difference.

swallowed · 01/08/2015 21:04

Yes red. I get that. Did you read the part where I said I was replying to element?

tarashill · 01/08/2015 21:05

Not a lot of money to help so many, bloody hell the queen gets about that and that's just for her. Give them Buck house as well, she's got loads of others.

Esmum07 · 01/08/2015 21:06

Personally I'd prefer my 57p to go towards number 5 in the link from the DM site...reopening the asylum office at Calais that the British government asked to be closed in 2002. That would solve many problems in one fell swoop.

Those seeking asylum could get help there, fill in the forms, seek asylum. If they pass they come in, if not they are sent back. If they pass I am happy to contribute until they get on their feet. If they don't get asylum at Calais they wouldn't have got in anyway.

As many others have said, having 57p off all existing tax payers, opening the gate and saying 'welcome' to every single person currently sitting in Calais is asking for trouble. Many of them will be asylum seekers, but many will not. Some will come here because they have family, some will come here because they have read that they will get a house (they won't), they will get benefits (not necessarily), so we're putting those people in a position from living on a Calais dockyard to living on a British city street.

If they pass asylum they get help. So we need to reopen the Calais office, get it staff to capacity and sort out claims quickly. It sends the message to anyone currently trying to make the trip to Calais that they will get help if they are genuine - but don't bother coming if they're not because the gates will not open.

By just allowing everyone in you will get more and more camping out at Calais. And do you seriously think that the people who know they will not get asylum will just get to Dover and patiently wait? Really? You're very naïve then. They will disappear. They will be exploited and their lives will be no better than they currently are. Better to be sent back now than be giving more false hope.

NewFlipFlops · 01/08/2015 21:06

Thank goodness for LazyLohan's and IsItMeOrIsItHotInHere's posts.

YABN (naive), OP.

redbinneo · 01/08/2015 21:09

Swallowed, I believe you said
"I'm a qualified teacher. I migrated from the UK to take a job as a teacher in another European country"

So are you an emigrant or an immigrant?

ghostyslovesheep · 01/08/2015 21:09

Red they are not dumped immigrant children Hmm

they are unaccompanied asylum seeking children - there is a difference - it's not a new thing to the UK I have been working with them for years

ghostyslovesheep · 01/08/2015 21:11

it's all so familiar

To ask where I can send my 57p?
swallowed · 01/08/2015 21:12

red I admit, I've had a couple of glasses of wine, but I have no clue what you are getting at.

I think I'll leave my point there for element to respond to, if she/he feels the need....

redbinneo · 01/08/2015 21:13

ghosty:
The article was about children dumped by lorry drivers. Is the 25 year old bit correct?

NewFlipFlops · 01/08/2015 21:14

Godwin shout.

ribbitTheFrog · 01/08/2015 21:20

Yabu. I think you'll find there are a lot more people wanting asylum than those at Calais atm. What do you plan to tell those already on the housing waiting lists? Are you happy to build a house in your garden for them?

Marylou2 · 01/08/2015 21:20

France needs to bring in the army to control the situation in Calais. If necessary with our help. We also need to ensure that Asylum claims are made offshore. Britain is never the 1st country anyone comes to unless they arrive at an airport. We should also refuse to process any claim by those not in possession of valid papers. Harsh perhaps but we are an overpopulated island nation and we cannot continue to admit those who arrive at our borders illegally to claim benefits.

ghostyslovesheep · 01/08/2015 21:20

Yes Red - like all looked after children - the point being at the time the LA takes on their care they are CHILDREN and asylum seeking

I knew some one would lazily shout Godwin - rather predictable - see the post is relevant as it's the Daily Mail banging on about immigrants swarming our country - a good illustration of how a) nothing changes and b) they can be very wrong :)

sometimes you are allowed to mention the the war in relation to the actual debate - that's just history and fact - not really nazi's for the sake of it

but it's easier to shout Godwin than engage the brain

ghostyslovesheep · 01/08/2015 21:23

Young people can leave care at 16 but, if it is in their best interests, should not have to leave before they are 18.

There are special arrangements for young people leaving care. Most young people over school-leaving age are not entitled to benefits and instead are supported by the local authority.

The local authority should plan from the beginning of the placement for what will happen when the young person stops being looked after.

As a young person leaving care you must be consulted about what will happen and should be given information and advice about making choices about your future. You can ask for aftercare support until you are 26.

For Red

NewFlipFlops · 01/08/2015 21:24

My brain is fully engaged, thank you ghostly. To compare today's economic migrants to Jews fleeing National Socialism is staggeringly insulting.

LadyDeadpool · 01/08/2015 21:24

Donated and shared on Facebook with a #Letthemcome tag. We struggle to get by each week on benefits but at least I know we're safe and warm tonight.

NewFlipFlops · 01/08/2015 21:24

*ghosty. Brain engaged but autocorrect isn't.

ghostyslovesheep · 01/08/2015 21:27

you are assuming they are 'economic migrants' how about we use the term desperate human beings - that might help illustrate the parallels

do you know the life history of everyone trying to get here from Calais to say they are all 'economic migrants'?
