Personally I'd prefer my 57p to go towards number 5 in the link from the DM site...reopening the asylum office at Calais that the British government asked to be closed in 2002. That would solve many problems in one fell swoop.
Those seeking asylum could get help there, fill in the forms, seek asylum. If they pass they come in, if not they are sent back. If they pass I am happy to contribute until they get on their feet. If they don't get asylum at Calais they wouldn't have got in anyway.
As many others have said, having 57p off all existing tax payers, opening the gate and saying 'welcome' to every single person currently sitting in Calais is asking for trouble. Many of them will be asylum seekers, but many will not. Some will come here because they have family, some will come here because they have read that they will get a house (they won't), they will get benefits (not necessarily), so we're putting those people in a position from living on a Calais dockyard to living on a British city street.
If they pass asylum they get help. So we need to reopen the Calais office, get it staff to capacity and sort out claims quickly. It sends the message to anyone currently trying to make the trip to Calais that they will get help if they are genuine - but don't bother coming if they're not because the gates will not open.
By just allowing everyone in you will get more and more camping out at Calais. And do you seriously think that the people who know they will not get asylum will just get to Dover and patiently wait? Really? You're very naïve then. They will disappear. They will be exploited and their lives will be no better than they currently are. Better to be sent back now than be giving more false hope.
