I have never been so insulted! Coca-cola enterprises!

A month ago I was sitting in my living room drinking a can of diet coke, I got to the last sips and something slipped out of the can and into my mouth, my immediate reaction was to spit the coke all over my living room floor. I looked down and found a red, inch long splinter laying on my floor within the spat out coke. I've attached a picture so you can see it for yourself.

It was a large wooden splinter which thankfully I managed to feel in my mouth so I could spit it out, I dread to think what could have happened if a child had drank from this particular can as it was sharp!

I contacted the company and told them what I had found, they were apologetic on the phone and sent out a box whereby I would send them the can, the splinter and another can from the multipack I purchased it from. I done exactly that and after a month I called them up to ask what the outcome was from the investigation, they said they had put it in a letter which came today.

This is the insulting part as the letter stated that;

The factory only uses wood based pallets for finished sealed products.
All components come in plastic boxes or plastic pallets.
We have no idea how you have come to find this foreign matter as we are confident that nothing has entered into the soft drink in the factory.
All packaging stations are verified against the companies standard specifications.
There are many preventative measures placed in critical points to stop any kind of foreign object entering or contaminating any of our products.
We have checked site records and this was the only complaint recieved for this particular batch in question.
We regret we cannot offer further enlightenment.
We are pleased to have had the chance to look into your complaint.
We have enclosed vouchers for £8 for goodwill.

I mean how insulting right? They have basically said that I've put it in there myself and that the piece of wood didn't come from them, what bullshit. I am perplexed at there cheek to be honest, I wasn't expecting vouchers or money from them but to know where and how this piece of wood had got into my coke can! There were red marks on the bottom of the can and as the piece of wood was red it crossed my mind that it could have been blood which worried me so to have knowledge about this would have let me rest my mind about something like that but instead I get called a liar and the blame is put on me as a customer who brought up a rather large concern not just for 'maintaining high standards' but for the safety of others who consume cans of coke.

I'll never be purchasing a can of coke again because of it, I think that it's disgusting how they have written the letter and think that it's my fault when this wooden splinter came out of there product!

not really insulting is it?

Loraline · 30/07/2015 17:07

I complained to a restaurant after three people I went with became ill (there was one dish they all tried and I didn't). They undertook an extremely comprehensive investigation - actually handing it over to a regulating authority so it would be done independently.

In the end, they didn't find anything. They couldn't get to the root of what had happened and said so. They acknowledged that this might be frustrating for me and offered us a free meal there, but they weren't going to make something up either.

I never thought that they thought we'd made it up though. Just because that wast the lack of resolution doesn't mean I was insulted.

Many years ago, my Dad found a bit of metal in a toffee and complained to the makers. Shortly after we recieved a huge box with a free pack of every type of sweet the company made. By that time, my Dad had discovered the hole in his tooth where the filling had come out....

When I was saving for my house deposit, I used to email companies telling them how wonderful their products were. Almost without fail, I got sent money off vouchers. Brought the weekly shop down by a few £.

elbowsdontsing2 · 30/07/2015 18:46

i once opened a bag of space invaders crisps and there was only 1 in there, yep just 1 the bag was full of air, i sucked it to make it last longer

bestguess23 · 30/07/2015 18:49

Elbow, that is the worst story of the lot! I would have been heartbroken over my lost 10p and the thought of no lovely space raiders.

YeOldeTrout · 30/07/2015 18:56

the first time I bought a pack of Butchers' cat food, almost all of each can was just jelly, no meat. I thought it was just a sign of very low quality, didn't realise it was a production line fault until long later!

Still happy to buy it, would complain next time.

elbowsdontsing2 · 30/07/2015 19:06

bestguess23 luckily it was out of a multy pack so i had 2 more bags as compensation Grin

LittleGwyneth · 30/07/2015 19:10

If you're really pissed off about it then you'd get a better reaction posting it on their social media (facebook/twitter ideally)- they're much more likely to take you seriously because they'll be worried about the story spreading.

Tanith · 30/07/2015 19:31

Quite frankly, Graysanatomy, I don't care: it's what the LA department is there for.

If more people complained to them, more companies would perhaps take food safety more seriously and not try to fob customers off in the name of profit and what they think they can get away with.

RitaKiaOra · 30/07/2015 21:17

Never been so insulted? You should get out more... Wink

GraysAnalogy · 30/07/2015 22:26

Have you ever worked for a food company, I assume you must have first hand knowledge if you can make allegations as how they deal with such things?

I haven't worked for a food company. However I have worked for a manufacturer. And all complaints are taken seriously and investigated. They HAVE to otherwise we don't comply to regulations and when the audits come in the company is basically frigged.

hashtagwhatever · 30/07/2015 22:30

I like the colour of your flooring. -(Adds nothing to the thread)

Sallyingforth · 30/07/2015 22:44

That piece of wood was probably the least harmful ingredient in the can of diet Coke.

Cabrinha · 30/07/2015 23:00

I don't work for Coke. I have worked for a large food manufacturer.
Honestly, every single product complaint is taken seriously. Hours of investigation will have gone into your splinter.

msgrinch · 30/07/2015 23:00

If you've "never been so insulted" by a perfectly dealt with situation like this then please I'm begging have my life. They did their job, you've been responded to and compensated what more do you want? The ceos first born? yabu, mistakes happen, they investigated and found nothing. let it go.

BoulevardOfBrokenSleep · 30/07/2015 23:05

My most bitter and sarcastic letter of complaint ever was to Sainsburys when, as an impoverished student, they sold me a twin pack of frozen pizzas that only had one pizza in it Sad. Still resentful.

Having said that, I recently bought a Waitrose spinach quiche that had a chunk of wood in it. They were all, like, 'Following our investigation' blah blah, vegetables come from a field and sometimes they have wood/stalks... but the chunk of wood was clearly sanded, varnished and man-made. Not convinced their investigation was that thorough, frankly. Sounds like similar has happened to you.

dougieroseagain · 30/07/2015 23:54

I once found a deep fried earwig in a packet of Kettle Chips. The only time I complained about something was about a packet of Poppet toffee sweets. I can't remember what the issue was, but my EX boyfriend said "What are you complaining about? That they didn't make you fat enough?"

Twat.

Smellyoulateralligator · 31/07/2015 00:05

diddl and hashtag said it already but lovely floor OP. What is it?

Write back and say you aren't satisfied with their response if you are still bothered. Tell them that the splinter did somehow find it's way into your drink and list some worst case scenarios. Tell them you are happy to help improve the safety of their manufacturing process.
They'll send you more vouchers, I bet.

BerylStreep · 31/07/2015 00:16

Agree with others that YABU drinking directly from a can and revolting coke (I know of someone who died from Weils disease after drinking directly from a contaminated can).

I don't think you can expect more. If it had been me, I would have reported it directly to environmental health, rather than sent it to Coke. They could have then done whatever tests were required.

GraysAnalogy · 31/07/2015 10:23

^Tell them you are happy to help improve the safety of their manufacturing process.

Bahahahaha.

That's what the problem is isn't it. If OP had received more vouchers she would be fine.

Why should she get more vouchers? She was compensated for a full pack, not just the can. That's enough.
