I have never been so insulted! Coca-cola enterprises!

A month ago I was sitting in my living room drinking a can of diet coke, I got to the last sips and something slipped out of the can and into my mouth, my immediate reaction was to spit the coke all over my living room floor. I looked down and found a red, inch long splinter laying on my floor within the spat out coke. I've attached a picture so you can see it for yourself.

It was a large wooden splinter which thankfully I managed to feel in my mouth so I could spit it out, I dread to think what could have happened if a child had drank from this particular can as it was sharp!

I contacted the company and told them what I had found, they were apologetic on the phone and sent out a box whereby I would send them the can, the splinter and another can from the multipack I purchased it from. I done exactly that and after a month I called them up to ask what the outcome was from the investigation, they said they had put it in a letter which came today.

This is the insulting part as the letter stated that;

The factory only uses wood based pallets for finished sealed products.
All components come in plastic boxes or plastic pallets.
We have no idea how you have come to find this foreign matter as we are confident that nothing has entered into the soft drink in the factory.
All packaging stations are verified against the companies standard specifications.
There are many preventative measures placed in critical points to stop any kind of foreign object entering or contaminating any of our products.
We have checked site records and this was the only complaint recieved for this particular batch in question.
We regret we cannot offer further enlightenment.
We are pleased to have had the chance to look into your complaint.
We have enclosed vouchers for £8 for goodwill.

I mean how insulting right? They have basically said that I've put it in there myself and that the piece of wood didn't come from them, what bullshit. I am perplexed at there cheek to be honest, I wasn't expecting vouchers or money from them but to know where and how this piece of wood had got into my coke can! There were red marks on the bottom of the can and as the piece of wood was red it crossed my mind that it could have been blood which worried me so to have knowledge about this would have let me rest my mind about something like that but instead I get called a liar and the blame is put on me as a customer who brought up a rather large concern not just for 'maintaining high standards' but for the safety of others who consume cans of coke.

I'll never be purchasing a can of coke again because of it, I think that it's disgusting how they have written the letter and think that it's my fault when this wooden splinter came out of there product!

Mmmm fruit polos - do they still make them?

GraysAnalogy · 30/07/2015 15:23

Unreasonable for drinking out of a can. I've heard it all now

Tanith · 30/07/2015 15:28

This is why I report them to the Local Authority. Takes the personality out of the situation and I know the manufacturers are obliged to satisfy them that there's nothing wrong with their processes.

The last time was to report a railway station bought baguette that was filled with bits of dead flies. The lady at who took my complaint really investigated thoroughly, kept me informed and compelled the sandwich bar to make significant changes to their business.

GraysAnalogy · 30/07/2015 15:34

If the LA received every complaint that could be directed straight to the company they'd be up shit creek ha

Tinkfromlovejoy · 30/07/2015 15:58

I was being lighthearted grays, but personally I cannot drink straight from the can. I've dropped far too many of them stacking shelves as a teen to imagine many of them are clean. I know a lot of people don't care but when you've dropped a basket of cans in a puddle round the back of a pub, then stacked them in a fridge for fear of having to explain to your boss you might have the same hang up! (IMD I was very young and scared of my boss). They also kept dogs in that yard. Confused

Theycallmemellowjello · 30/07/2015 16:02

The thing is... corporations' only purpose is to make money for their shareholders (and pay the board). They look after their customers only so far as they need to in order to pursue this goal. They've clearly decided that you can't pin any fault on them (probably true) and have of course worded their letter carefully so as not to admit any fault. 8 quid is the amount they think will make you go away and stop wasting their time. If it looks to you like they don't give a shit about you, then that's because it's true, they don't! Of course they don't. It might seem jarring because like most companies Coke tries to project a caring, friendly image - but obviously this is just advertising, trying to make you buy their product. Chalk it up to experience.

GraysAnalogy · 30/07/2015 16:03

You sounded a bit judgey to me Tink so I'm sorry if I took it the wrong way!

DJThreeDog · 30/07/2015 16:08

My mum once fired off an angry letter to Sainsburys as an own brand cornetto pack had a missing one. Just the cone. They gave her a replacement and a refund.

Turns out, actually there was an extra cone on one of the ice creams, my dad lazy beggar just left it on the counter with no explanation!

GraysAnalogy · 30/07/2015 16:13

I'm going to admit to being a complete nobhead here and part of the reason why companies don't trust folk

I once complained my crunchy nut clusters didn't have enough clusters in

It was years ago, me and my friend were having a few glasses of wine and watching some programme about people complaining and getting good deals etc. I had the bright idea of complaining about my cereal because I was thoroughly disappointed about the amount of clusters.

Anyway they sent me a £25 voucher

DJThreeDog · 30/07/2015 16:14

jello - this annoys me a bit. I totally get this perception (and it probably is true in a lot of cases) but having worked in a complaints department for a high street bank, I can categorically say the people that make the decisions on your complaints work hard to fix the issue and to compensate adequately.

It's horrible to just get the 'you don't give a shit' back when you've worked hard to get an answer to the problem, fix it, AND compensate! Sometimes the answer is, we have no answer. The company can't throw shedloads of money at something they have no proof was a problem at their end.

GraysAnalogy · 30/07/2015 16:18

Part of my role when I worked in CS was returns. I'd send the items off to get tested, and it really was rigorous testing, and then report back. The customers just would NOT have it that there was nothing wrong with the product or it's production, but how it had been used. I'd even arrange to send one of our representatives out to look at how its being used to see if that's have an effect on the integrity and to advise them on how to properly use it. They'd go apeshite. So you can't win.

Murfles · 30/07/2015 16:27

YABU OP. I never drink straight out of a can. Goodness knows where the cans are stored before we buy them. A friend whose DH works in a warehouse once told me on occasion rats run over tinned food and drink containers in some warehouses. Bleugh. I use a glass or a straw.

LastOneDancing · 30/07/2015 16:29

My friend once complained there were no mice shapes in her noodle doodles (remember them?). She got a letter of apology from Mr Noodledoodle himself.

So its always worth raising these things I think.

DJThreeDog · 30/07/2015 16:29

I agree Grays (even though you're clearly part of the problem WinkGrin)

I sound really po-faced with my above post, but sometimes it is hard when you've bent over backwards to help a customer and then either found out they lied, or they have 'taken it further' (in my case would be FOS)!

It didn't bother me that much (despite all evidence to the contrary Grin) but it did mean we would have a few rants!

DJThreeDog · 30/07/2015 16:31

You know what, I've never even considered the shit that might be on top of a can. Gross.

I shall henceforth start using a straw or glass!

GraysAnalogy · 30/07/2015 16:33

I was deeply ashamed when I received the vouchers, I'd actually forgot that'd I'd contacted them Blush

Oh I love it when they used to threaten us with Trading Standards or something.

VivaLeBeaver · 30/07/2015 16:38

I had some raspberries from Tesco the other day, sealed in a punnet. I noticed when I bought them one box had a dead bluebottle in it so avoided that box.

I popped the first raspberry in my mouth and thought what the hell is that crunchy texture in my mouth. Spat it all out. There was a dead, dried up bluebottle which must have been stuck to the raspberry.

Had a debate with my colleague whether to eat the rest or not and decided not to waste them and carried on. Never crossed my mind to complain to tesco to be honest.

DJThreeDog · 30/07/2015 16:41

My favourite was "I'm a personal friend of " Grin

INickedAName · 30/07/2015 16:44

I never drink from bottles or cans ever since I dog pissing on a lot of crates with cans of pop on.

Used to live on golf course and the owner would store cans of lager for his bar in an in used barn, lots of rats around. He was lazy with his property maintained and cut a lot of corners so I really donut they were washed before selling to customers. Yuck yuck.

GraysAnalogy · 30/07/2015 16:45

Oh jesus Viva that would have knocked me sick.

That reminded me of the time I complained on behalf of my friend. I say complained I didn't really complain just made them aware of it. It was a few years ago when we were at uni having something to eat. Got a salad and there was a big juicy caterpillar in hers. Things like that happen though, we didn't kick up a fuss just asked for a refund and job done.

Theycallmemellowjello · 30/07/2015 16:48

DJ - I am definitely not talking about employees - I am talking about corporations and their policies. Sorry if that was not clearer.

This-
The company can't throw shedloads of money at something they have no proof was a problem at their end.

is precisely what I mean - consumer-facing companies present themselves as friendly - consumers expect them to act in a 'friendly' way - giving them the benefit of the doubt, being generous and so on. But companies aren't your friend - they have shareholders to answer to and have to look to their own profits first of all. This is my point - that no one should be surprised their corporate policy is geared towards helping the consumer only insofar as it helps the company.

Adarajames · 30/07/2015 16:57

You expect a company that causes droughts by drilling so deep as to remove all accessible ground waters in dry countries, thereby killing crops and cattle and causing deprivation and starvation to locals; and has used death squads to stop workers in Columbia from unionising to get decent pay, to care about one customer who finds something in 1 can if their evil drink?! Y are definitely BU!

HexU2 · 30/07/2015 16:58

Okay - I try and avoid cans anyway - prefer bottles that can be reused - but after this thread will not be drinking straight from cans at all.

I worked in a food factory as a summer jobs - lots or rules to follow. However the floor management wasn't as good as it could have been an did see long term employees ignoring procedures.

Worried me when it can to the nut free ranges - team leader instead it was fine for that range to re-use the Greece paper from previous nut covered range which had a few nuts stuck on. Us summer interns who had the rules explained to us all looked unhappy with that - one of us nipped out and mentioned it to floor manager had bigger boss coincidentally next to them. They came running in but whole batch had to be thrown - fuck knows how many times they'd done that.

Random person not following procedures one time - how can they track that down to the point in time it happened?

Add in customers doing the damage intentionally or not - and you can understand their stance.

TiedUpWithString · 30/07/2015 17:02

If you're in the UK, speak to the FSA. Coca Cola could be fined a significant amount and have fobbed you off.

GraysAnalogy · 30/07/2015 17:03

How have they fobbed her off?
