to think that the Calais migrants are economic migrants and should not be given asylum?

All of the Calais migrants are young men. If they were true asylum seekers seeking safety from persecution they could have claimed asylum in a number of safe countries Western countries already, including France which is hardly a dangerous place. Instead they camp out in Calais, causing a nuisance, a mess, costing the UK and France a lot of money, making the lives of lorry drivers and tourists hell and the situation is becoming increasingly dangerous. I sincerely hope these people are not given asylum in the UK and any that have managed to reach the UK should be fast tracked out of the country and given economic assistance whilst they are here.

Christ so now we have to type out 'the UK government' instead of 'we'.

I'd like to hear some solutions too.

JassyRadlett · 30/07/2015 16:12

Doe, if you're up for a discussion, how about responding when posters answer your questions about things? Or were they supposed to be rhetorical?

DoeEyedNear · 30/07/2015 16:13

Sorry jassy I am reading them but others get in first with the responses Grin

sebsmummy1 · 30/07/2015 16:15

I think this issue is extremely likey to sway a Yes vote to leave the EU in the referendum so we can start policing our borders again.

JassyRadlett · 30/07/2015 16:16

No, no one's really responded to my answers to your direct questions, leading me to feel like you're not interested in a real discussion on facts - rather than broadcasting opinions.

TwistInMySobriety · 30/07/2015 16:18

If people are supposed to claim in the first safe country they come to, that means we take none, what with being an island and all. How is that fair?

MrsUltracrepidarian · 30/07/2015 16:20

Sebsmummy I think the problem is that if we left the EU, the French would (even more) just say, sod you and let 'em all get on the trains...
But I agree it will sway the populace.
And those of us in South London who do actually see the impact on schools will be up against those Guardian readers who live in Hay-On-Wye and Wenslyedale and don't see what the problem is...

DoeEyedNear · 30/07/2015 16:20

Sorry I thought they had

I'll go back and have a read

Andante57 · 30/07/2015 16:21

Coffee would you object to the word "swarms" if it was referring to a whole lot of Tories or Bullingdon Club members?

Coffeemarkone · 30/07/2015 16:21

" Christ so now we have to type out 'the UK government' instead of 'we'. "

frankly yes. My O level history teacher pulled us up on it a long time ago.
It is not 'WE' as in you or I or DoeEyed is it?
'WE' really do not have any say in government policy do we?
If you think we do, sorry but you are deluded.

Coffeemarkone · 30/07/2015 16:23

Grin swarms of Hooray Henries buzzing around Calais?
Great image, thanks.

frankieboy23 · 30/07/2015 16:23

We do in a way coffee its called an election

MorrisZapp · 30/07/2015 16:24

I think it's more about typing efficiency than delusion but we can agree to disagree on that.

How about some practical solutions to the current crisis, from a compassionate pov?

Coffeemarkone · 30/07/2015 16:25

really, and you really think that you casting your little vote affects subsequent government policy?
Like I said, deluded.

frankieboy23 · 30/07/2015 16:25

Shit im deluded and naive yay im on a roll

DoeEyedNear · 30/07/2015 16:26

Actually having read through again no one gave me a straight answer to my request for a meaningful figures that match us up to France Germany Italy and the Netherlands. Comparing us to eastern Europe when most of the people entering the UK are from eastern Europe is daft.

Coffeemarkone · 30/07/2015 16:27

yes Zapp of course 'we' is easier to type...v lazy thought!
Surely with a name like yours you are keen to use precise and clear language?

TeenageMutantNinjaTurtle · 30/07/2015 16:28

I don't think any of the people currently camping at Calais are from Eastern Europe.

Eastern Europeans are allowed to come here and work....

DoeEyedNear · 30/07/2015 16:28

Yes our votes do count. As much as labour voters keep on insisting more people didn't vote this government in than did I think the figure was 51% voted right of centre.

Votes also counted in the Scottish referendum

Voting matters.

And if you don't like it you get active and make a stand and argue your case.

JassyRadlett · 30/07/2015 16:29

And those of us in South London who do actually see the impact on schools will be up against those Guardian readers who live in Hay-On-Wye and Wenslyedale and don't see what the problem is...

I do so love these assumptions and stereotypes.

The main problem for schools in my bit of South London is govt policy that prevents the council building schools where they're needed, instead having to go through the free schools farce, who seem to delight in delays and in putting schools where they aren't needed.

DoeEyedNear · 30/07/2015 16:29

Its two separate issues isn't it.

We have the migrants at Calais from Africa, middle east etc and the migrants from eastern Europe. They are all arguably economic migrants and the only difference is one has freedom of movement one doesn't.

Coffeemarkone · 30/07/2015 16:30

yes votes count....but they don't affect policy post election doe they?
Look at Nick Clegg for a perfect example.

JassyRadlett · 30/07/2015 16:30

In what terms, Doe?

DoeEyedNear · 30/07/2015 16:31

Which post are you referring to jassy

JassyRadlett · 30/07/2015 16:33

There is an awful lot people can do in terms of active citizenship between elections. Politicians care about the contents of MPs' post bags, and that helps to influence policy. Petitions, social media activism, joining political parties can all make a difference.
