To think that it's ok to use the basket only tills if you only have a few things in your trolley?

I'm talking less than 10 items here.

In M&S today with 2yo DD and 1yo DS, using a small trolley so DS would have the seat in it. I picked up a few bits, 7 items now I think of it. The cashier on the basket only told me I couldn't use that till. I said I only had a basket's worth of items but she repeated that I couldn't use the till. Fine. I walked to queue at the other tills feeling grumpy. I've done this many times at Tesco and never been stopped, I kind of expected m&s to be more customer focused.

At the time as I say I was feeling quite annoyed doesn't she know how tricky it is to negotiate a supermarket with two small DCs?! Grin but now I can accept that maybe stupid rules are rules. What do you think?

I get irrationally ragey if someone has eleven items in the ten items or less line.

I get irrationally ragey if someone says less when they should say fewer.

I would have just put everything in to a basket, can't refuse you then as you are following the rules

I have to get a trolley if I don't have my walker with me so that I have something to lean on and also because I wouldn't be able to carry a basket once it had stuff in, I have seen people with baskets that are overflowing while I may only have a few items in trolley. Trolley doesn't always mean a big shop and basket doesn't always mean few bits

emwithme · 29/07/2015 20:17

I had giant amounts of rage in a Sainsbury's once when the cashier refused to serve me my three items in a trolley, which I'd used because it's impossible to shop with a basket when you're using two walking sticks (which were sitting in the trolley), even though she'd served the elderly lady ahead of me with her items in a trolley.

I abandoned the shopping and went somewhere else for my bread, milk and potatoes (and have spent considerably less in Sainsbury's since).

ForalltheSaints · 29/07/2015 20:18

It should be so many items or less. You may have a back problem that means you cannot carry a basket.

ProcrastinatorGeneral · 29/07/2015 20:20

I put a basket in the trolley these days. Been caught out before!

limitedperiodonly · 29/07/2015 20:24

It's fewer, not less FFS.

(Game of Thrones clip - spoiler alert!)

I got screamed at in a supermarket when I went to a till with 3 bottles of wine plus bags of bedding which I had bought from the store next door, I put the bedding into a trolley as it was too heavy to carry, so thought I'd nip to buy wine and then wheel the lot to the car. The woman was really loud saying basket only till, it wasn't, it was 10 items or less, I had 3. Asked to see the manager who put the wine through at no charge and apologised. Some stores really need to send their staff on a customer care course.

GarminGirl · 29/07/2015 21:35

Why? When staff have no choice but to follow store policy

SeenSheen · 29/07/2015 21:48

Definitely basket in the trolley. Perhaps you should have picked up an empty basket today and transferred your shopping, Ridiculous attitude for M&S.

I'm with the pp on "fewer" although we use the incorrect signs for a bit of grammatical practice.

Garmin- I went to a self service till with 3 items, didn't expect a member of staff to scream like a fishwife. She could see what I had in my trolley.

ILiveOnABuildsite · 30/07/2015 08:02

limitedperiodonly you have made my day! Thank you.

With regard to the thread, my opinion is if there was space for the trolley without obstructing the way for other customers than in your case op it seems the trolley served more as a pushchair than a shopping trolley. Having said this, I've used trolleys in this way before and I've always steered clear of the 'basket only' tills because I felt I shouldn't use them with a trolley despite only having a few items. I am a rules are rules kind of person when it comes to making my own decisions though, I don't critises those who chose to act differently as long as it doesn't affect me or others.

PlateGirl · 30/07/2015 08:20

He he, I love GoT, thanks for that limited I'll remember that rule now!

Also, thanks to all who've suggested the basket in the trolley, perfect solution!

I got told off in Tesco because someone ELSE had abandoned a trolley by the basket only till.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 30/07/2015 09:25

What Worra said ^^

I'm getting over a bout of vertigo and use a trolley for my handbag and maybe 2 or 3 items. '10 items or FEWER' should be the Frothometer limit.

limitedperiodonly · 30/07/2015 09:46

SORRY FOR A GoT SPOILER.

That Stannis clip reveals a major plot point at the end if you haven't seen the last season. I didn't notice it last night because I clicked off before the end.

Thanks. I love Stannis and GoT. Miserable bastard that he is.

limitedperiodonly · 30/07/2015 09:56

And you were right about your trolley OP if it only had a few items in it.

My nephew was working in Sainsbury's on a basket-only till. An elderly woman pushed a trolley which had about three items in it - probably cat food, tea, gin.

Someone told her to get out of the queue. My nephew said she could stay. He was going to add that the woman didn't look strong enough to carry a basket but didn't want to embarrass her even more.

The customer complained about him. The manager said he'd deal with it and she left, probably beside herself with joy that he was going to get sacked. The manager came over and congratulated my nephew on his sense.

PrincessOfChina · 30/07/2015 10:03

YABU.

Fewer.

BeyondTheWall · 30/07/2015 10:34

When I use a basket, it goes on my lap as i'm in my wheelchair. I'd love to visit these stores where the gap isnt big enough for a trolley Grin

MumoftheBoyandtheGirl · 30/07/2015 11:11

The trolly is for your shopping, not for transporting your child HTH.

BikketBikketBikket · 30/07/2015 11:44

I've been directed to the 'basket-only' tills recently in my local M&S when I had a trolley. As I'd only got about 6 items, and it was the store manager asking me if I'd like to use this till, I didn't argue. Grin

Oh, and the trolley fitted through with no problems...

RufusTheReindeer · 30/07/2015 12:44

Yanbu

Used to do this when the children were small with no problems

Angelika321 · 30/07/2015 13:10

I often do this when I have a couple of kids with me. It's much easier to contain them using a trolley. I have been called up on it at the checkout, but usually pointing out I only have a couple of items seems to do the trick. That said, yesterday I had a basket and managed to fill it with around 30 items! I still used the basket checkout, but was considerate enough to let the person behind me with only 1 item jump ahead.

Dumdedumdedum · 30/07/2015 13:24

"10 items or fewer" is a different thing from "baskets only". As has been pointed out, you can fit many more than 10 items into a basket, and can put fewer than 10 items into a trolley. I always use a trolley in the supermarket as I am old and decrepit and infirm overweight with bad back, knees and ankles and find it easier and less painful than carrying a basket round with me. So, OP, YANBU Grin
