to feel quite sorry for Walter Palmer?

TwistInMySobriety · 29/07/2015 08:40

Not very sorry what with him being a humungous twat for liking big game hunting, obviously. But seriously, worldwide opprobium and trial by media for partaking in a legal activity (he claims his permits were legit) that is a significant income stream for an impoverished third world country?

Also, while I'm at it, the death of a lion makes headlines? When did you last see a headline about the deaths of six million people in the civil war in the DRC?

Rachel, I was speaking in regards to the use and treatment of animals and people in undeveloped countries.

There was a thread asking people to eat less meat and think about their shopping habits, it was treated as an inconvenience and joke by many.

A lot of wildlife is poisoned illegally by the boardering Landowners/Farmers. A lot of the environmental damage done is done on the UKs behalf, as such.

This includes the killing of native species.

The sentence for poaching can be death.

This is not a new issue and there has been a lot of work going on for this to come out.

squoosh · 29/07/2015 10:24

Absolutely no sympathy for the vile man. Long may the social media shit storm continue.

Branleuse · 29/07/2015 10:32

I dont feel sorry for him. Hes one of the utter shits of the world. Anything bad that happens to him as a result of this, he deserves

OttiliaVonBCup · 29/07/2015 10:33

In fact I am kind of hoping that if good old Walter gets his arse handed to him then it might cause some of the other gun toting wankers to think twice.

I hope that too, but I do seem to recall another stupid rich twat last year, who posted a photo of herself with shot wild animals, got her arse handed to her by the social media and now here we go again.

No sure it works. Sadly.

DayLillie · 29/07/2015 10:37

Didn't someone in Spain (Juan something or other) do something similar (maybe not a lion?), that they tried to sweep under the carpet, quickly?

DamnBamboo · 29/07/2015 10:37

YABVU for defending this low-life pond scum!
WTF is wrong with you?

The other woman took part in a legal hunt.

Now whilst many do not like legal hunts, it brings in revenue for the local population and the money goes towards conservation programmes that do work.

"Poaching", is accepted across Africa, it's taken the Government and local law enforcement a long time to address this, because it was an accepted part of culture and made people money.

The legal hunts will continue and its complex why they need to.

I hope that it isn't just the local people that are charged, there are obviously go betweens further up that need prosecuting.

The only way for that to happen is long prison sentences to be handed to Westeners taking part and not giving the information as to how they set this up, before they got out there.

It's a shame that they can't carry out their sentence in Africa, I think that would help them think twice.

MaxieMouse · 29/07/2015 10:45

The only thing I'm sorry about is that he's probably going to get away with it. Very happy that he's in the media spotlight, at least that's one tiny bit of punishment he's going to get for being a massive cunt.

OttiliaVonBCup · 29/07/2015 10:47

Still a cunt.

Samcro · 29/07/2015 10:57

yabu
he is a vile excuse for a human being

SuburbanRhonda · 29/07/2015 11:11

DayLillie

I believe it's King Juan Carlos of Spain you're referring to, who hunted and killed an elephant on holiday, while his country was in the grips of its worst-ever recession. He did make an unprecedented apology but that's small consolation to the elephant.

I was going to post the picture but it's too upsetting Sad

DayLillie · 29/07/2015 11:26

Indeed it was. In spite of all we know about elephants now Sad

SheHasAWildHeart · 29/07/2015 12:32

I think to shoot anyone/anything and watch it die (over 40 hours) means you have psychopathic tendencies. And to do it repeatedly speaks volumes.

yolofish · 29/07/2015 13:44

Although I quite like the idea of someone removing this chap's teeth without anaesthetic over a 40 hour period I would not want to do it myself or suggest that someone else do it.

As that is unlikely to happen I'd settle for him losing his business and his lifestyle which entitles him to shoot animals totally unnecessarily. (And I say that as meat-eating, leather-wearing, pro-vermin killing, pro-culling where proven necessity individual). But NOT beautiful (or even ugly), wild endangered creatures just so you can hang their head on your wall or let your children roll on their skin on the floor... just because your prick isnt quite as big as you thought it was.

SheHasAWildHeart · 29/07/2015 13:55

Thumbs up yolofish

FundamentalistQuaker · 29/07/2015 13:58

This dentist and his 'hobby' gives me the creeps.

That said, I do actually feel sorry for him and anyone who gets caught up in one of these internet outrage events. When the whole world is being told how terrible you are. You can't go to work (and may lose everything as a result). You can't stay in your own home and don't know when it will be safe to return. You are getting constant abuse and death threats and have no idea if it will ever stop.

I think that is disgusting. And the more people who say he deserves it or they don't feel sorry for him, or equivocate in other ways, the more by tiny increments we lend legitimacy to this kind of cowardly mass oppression. The next person who faces this type of campaign may well be someone we do feel sympathy for. This happens to everyone from football referees to parents who put a seemingly unkind video on Youtube to criminals to police officers-you name it. It is wrong and it is making our world a much more cruel and unsafe place.

CatMilkMan · 29/07/2015 14:00

I honestly don't give a fuck if his entire life is ruined because of this and I'm relatively pro hunting.

CassieBearRawr · 29/07/2015 14:02

YABU. He's a twat.

So is everyone else involved in game hunting.

HawthornLantern · 29/07/2015 14:06

I am probably disproportionately angry about this man and what he did and am quite happy for him to be on the receiving end of the flack given that he was so happy to take advantage of an extremely poor country to go and get his kicks. Where was he planning to go next - the DRC and claim a gorilla? I'm sure he could find plenty of impoverished and desperate guides to help him out.

I know he is protesting he thought his kill was legal but even if he has enough written proof of permits or whatever, I think all he was interested in was making sure he had a few shreds of credible deniability. He would have known Cecil was known and loved - it was exactly this that was part of the thrill for him. I am sure it would be impossible to prove but I'm equally sure of my belief that he knew it was illegal. And now the circus has caught up with him and it might be a bit harder to shake off than when he shot a bear out of hunting season.

But probably the best outcome we can hope for is that his business is so damaged he can never afford to go globe hopping for his trophies again.

Mimigolightly · 29/07/2015 14:09

REALLY?? The man is scum.

TwistInMySobriety · 29/07/2015 14:11

Thank god fundamentalistquaker, I was beginning to think I was really on my own there!

browneyedgirl86 · 29/07/2015 14:19

YABU!!

This man is scum. He deserves everything he gets. I want to put him in with a pride of lions without a weapon and see how he fairs.

He's a disgusting, vile bastard.

WaggleBee · 29/07/2015 14:32

YABVU

He's a massive cunt. A truly low vile person. I'd be really ashamed to know someone like that. The lowest of the low.

WaggleBee · 29/07/2015 14:33

And yy, throw him to the lions. Literally.
