to suggest we take over border control in Calais!

obviously with the agreement of the French...

From watching the news it seems the French are not very effective and/or are apathetic at border control around Calais and are unable to prevent illegal immigrants from attempting to enter the UK.

So maybe it would make sense and save money in the long run for us to go over there and take charge of the situation both sides of the Channel.

Not reign back from making changes and being prepared to self-sacrifice just because of some fat dictator who leads the worst example. I don't acknowledge or accept or surrender to bullies

Yes but how?

Just waltz into some one elses country and start setting up all this stuff? The arrogant west?
The people in charge, even steal aid of their own starving people how on earth do you propose to give them intellectual property Confused

I think in light of Isis we need to be very fussy to allow people to stay who share our values really and way of life.

No. We don't waltz.

We give it to them. We allow the exploitation of intellectual property. The result is that for the first time in history the exploitation of land (which is currently what all wars are about) falls away.

The internet allows us to do that. In fact it means its inevitable. Its knocking on the door.

BeyondDespairandRepair · 29/07/2015 19:24

Give it to who, do you understand how the governments work? We cannot protect aid going to these places how do you propose protecting anything else thats actually worth something and could liberate the peoples they want to keep repressed?

French politican has suggested a naval blockade in in med across Libya, seems only thing to stop all human traffickers.

woodhill · 29/07/2015 20:01

sounds sensible to me.

MrsUltracrepidarian · 29/07/2015 20:40

Yes, agree.
In fact the Italians and French are probably furious that the British sent a navy ship to the Med to pick up trafficked people form the coast of Libya and ferry them to Italy! Should have dropped them off back in Libya.
Having said that that, the Turkey/Greece route is probably going to be the real problem going forward.

Mistigri · 29/07/2015 21:11

I doubt the Italians are furious at all since they have been undertaking most of the rescue work in the Med themselves, as well as sheltering the migrants once they reach Italy, and processing at least twice as many asylum applications as the UK.

SteamTrainsRealAleandOpenFires · 29/07/2015 21:28

I supose now the our border is now in Calais, we could adopt a siege mentality and begin putting up ramparts/stone walls & digging a very wide, deep mount around the port?

yolofish · 29/07/2015 21:28

A couple of things:

Once they get off the lorry/train they have risked their lives on they wander around the motorway junctions/along the side of the road and Kent police pick them up (having been phoned by passing motorists to alert them to the illegal presence). They get fed, showered, details taken and then shipped to an asylum centre. Probably not a pleasant place, but again food/clothing/roof. They are NOT allowed to work, NOT allowed to claim any form of benefits while their claim is being processed, and I think for 2 years after that. Still costs UK taxpayer though.

I was talking to someone this morning whose daughter works locally in import/export. Quite apart from the hauliers being fined if an illegal gets through on their particular lorry, maybe having crowbarred the padlocks off, once inside the illegals piss/shit all over the contents of the lorry (there are no toilets inside a container, they could be in there for a long time). So the ENTIRE consignment has to be binned. Huge cost to businesses.

SweetCharlotteRose · 29/07/2015 21:30

I don't know what the answer is but I can't see this having a happy ending.

People this desperate will also be desperate when they arrive and people who have nothing to lose can be dangerous. I don't know how you can sort people who are genuinely fleeing from people who mean the uk harm or from people who are criminals.

Also - as an aside - and a personal experience, it took two weeks longer for medication on which I'm life dependent on to get here. I order well in advance fortunately but will we start to see shortages and delays in things we normally take for granted? And in some cases things we cannot do without?

yolofish · 29/07/2015 23:50

was talking to a French friend tonight, she lives in Normandy and has a house-finding business. Well, she did have a house-finding business... but the last couple of months has seriously put off her English clients looking for their little bit of French paradise. So it is costing the French too; and I cannot imagine that Calais/Le Touquet/Pas de Calais etc etc etc are enjoying the lack of restaurant trade/day trippers/big spenders at Cite Europe to mention just a few.

yes sweetcharlotte I agree about desperate people turning to desperate means. Hope your medication continues to arrive safely.

just bumping this for those on the economic migrants thread. there are many comments on here for those who want to know how the current crisis is affecting daily life for those in Kent (not just East Kent, basically anyone who needs to use the M20 or A20 into or out of the county). and those in northern France too.

SteamTrainsRealAleandOpenFires · 31/07/2015 23:21

How about this proposal...

We (the UK) help France, by taking in so many "Refugees" per year, in exchange for all of Normandy and the rest of Western France down to the Med (and all the native French all swear allegiance to the "Duke of Normandy & his/her Descendants")

Or we could go the other route, by appointing some unknown person/ loudest vocalist to hopefully take charge & in theory control him/her.

Does anyone think that's a bad idea.?

GarminGirl · 02/08/2015 19:03

Well yes sweetcharlotte I do wonder what's in those huge lorries heading over here. Whatever it is, it's delayed!
