I think that women perpetrators attract such notoriety because we are not wired to contemplate them as sex offenders. Similarly when Catholic priests were outed a few years ago, it was hard to contemplate it being anything other than a trickle of aberrant frustrated misfits. Since then we have had the unraveling of Savile and the ongoing political sagas. We sink lower and lower all the time until we are desensitized and cynical.
I am pleased to feel more shocked that women have undertaken this crime as I still embrace the notion that they are wired to be nurturing and protective. Remember that it was said of Hindley and Brady that she was the hook to reel children in with. Desperately sad.
