To see pics of Mariah Carey's new necklace all over media and think that life is just un-fucking-fair

I don't like Mariah Carey to start with. I possibly hate James Packer even more.

Their alliance, played all over the media, makes me feel sick.

I just hate the inequality in life. A bauble to MC could save so many lives if it were converted to something good.

Birdsgottafly · 25/07/2015 22:58

I get my Yellow "diamonds" from QVC, they sparkle just as much as MC and are guilt free.

What I spend on skin care etc could vaccinate a village, as said, in the Western World, we all spend money on things we don't need and should be a lot more grateful for were we have been born.

Keeptrudging · 25/07/2015 23:11

Fine, let's 'redistribute' all the assets of wealthy people. Then there is zero incentive for people to work hard to get an education, set up companies which employ people or do anything which creates wealth. Everyone could then work in a 'normal' job on average earnings, and not pay the 40% tax on their earnings. In fact, remove high earners and then everyone pays an equal amount in tax, but at least it would be 'fair'. Confused

kali110 · 26/07/2015 01:56

No she can spend her money on whatever she wants ( even though her bf bought it, so he can spend it on whatever he wants!)
I was on benefits for 2 years after being really ill and was skint.
Should all wealthy people give me money?
Let them buy what they like.
I would.(lots of cats).

Now will someone please post a pic or link and show me this necklace!!

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 26/07/2015 02:03

I will attempt to google, I am intrigued too!

whitecandles · 26/07/2015 02:04

What TTWK said. If you eat three meals a day, drive a car, sleep in a comfortable bed, you are doing a lot better than most. The gap between you and the poorest is far wider than the gap between you and Mariah Carey.

The problem is not individuals spending their own money, the problem is structural. MC could donate every penny she earns to charity and it would make no difference. The problems are deeper than that.

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 26/07/2015 02:04

Ta-daaaaaaaaah!

the necklace

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 26/07/2015 02:06

It's an 18 carat heart-shaped yellow diamond.

I don't really like coloured diamonds to be honest, nor MC herself and certainly not her music, but the necklace is pretty and I have ALWAYS been jealous of her cleavage and gorgeous unblemished caramel skin...

WaggleBee · 26/07/2015 02:17

Oooo shiny!

It's beautiful. No problem whatsoever with people spending money they've earned on whatever they like.

Jealousy is an ugly emotion, best not to let it take hold or there's no stopping it. I'm a great believer in being happy for the good things in your own life rather than staring with envy at others.

SilverNightFairy · 26/07/2015 02:35

Today is my 7th wedding anniversary. My dh gave me a lovely Kate Spade necklace I have been eyeing for a long while but putting off as we have other things that need our money. I am thrilled to bits with my gift. I don't think I could love it more than Mariah loves her diamond. Someone wise once said "Comparison is the thief of Joy" I believe it.

BadLad · 26/07/2015 05:33

Here is what I assume is the candle thread.

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/2433236-to-take-back-my-used-Jo-Malone-candles-as-the-quality-has-been-declining-for-years

Hardly a flaming - just a couple of posters saying what a ridiculous comment

JoyceDivision · 26/07/2015 06:34

It reminds me of the little glass heart necklaces we used to buy on holiday... cut glass with a sheen on it to make it look 'jewelled'

To be fair I'm not sure what cost more, the necklace or her face Grin

but if she chucks a fair amount of cash to charity then good on her.

PtolemysNeedle · 26/07/2015 09:09

It seems silly to me to be jealous over something like this. I can understand feelings of jealousy towards people who have things that actually matter from people who don't have them, things like a family, health, children, but even then it's a pointless emotion.

The world has never been fair or equal, I don't understand why anyone lives with the belief that it should be. Especially if they live in the western world, if you're in a position to know that some singer has been given some expensive bling then you're already in a much better financial position than most people in the world and it irrelevant to you. It makes no difference to you or your life if someone else is wearing a diamond unless you choose to get angry and jealous about it.

BalloonSlayer · 26/07/2015 09:20

Salmotrutta The Jesus story is different, in that the woman used the expensive ointment to anoint his feet - ie as an act of worship of him as the Son of God. She was scolded (by Judas?) for "wasting" it, but Jesus didn't agree. Basically I think what Jesus was saying is that it's OK to spend money on acts of worship.

FyreFly · 26/07/2015 09:35

Looks a bit small for 18 karats to me.

Anyway, 500k is cheap in the fine jewellery world. If you have a quick Google you'll see that in recent years a number of stones have gone for multiple millions - 7, 8 and even 9 figure sums. They make 500k look like chump change...

I'm not a massive fan of Maria Carey, but I really don't get the outrage Confused

LazyLouLou · 26/07/2015 09:43

Balloon, he really wasn't. That would have been anathema at that point of the bible, it being the New Testament and all. Expensive acts of worship are Old Testamant ways, revived once The Church became centralised and greedy.

The meaning rally was as Salmo said, you do not have to do without everything in life to be a good person. Sadly, whatever any individual does the poor will always exist. Such inequity is the way of the world, we can only do our best to 'not look away'. This is one of the trials of life/tests of faith.

It seems that MC does donate a goodly % of her riches, so she is on the side of the angels, even if I can't stand the sound of her voice Smile

lokole · 26/07/2015 09:46

YABU she or her her bf can spend their money on what they like (including necklaces).

Vagabond · 26/07/2015 10:50

Eerrr, hello you big meanies! I didn't say I was jealous. I'm not jealous.

I am just having an existential hand-wringing moment about the injustices in life.

Mumsnetters do have a way of pointing out the bleeding obvious. I know, rationally, that she earned it. I know all that. It isn't about what I know, it's about how I feel.

And I feel that there is no justice in the world when there is so much inequality. And I'm not even a socialist!

I just don't get how a woman can wear a half million dollar bauble on her neck when that bauble could …….

ah, forget it. Y'all don't understand.

OP posts:
BadLad · 26/07/2015 10:57

I really don't get the outrage

Lots of mumsnetters don't have any spare cash. Therefore Mariah Carey isn't allowed any either.

Mrsjayy · 26/07/2015 10:59

So mariah carey new boyfriend has bought her a necklace and she is to blame for everything meh Im not sure why you are worked up about this

PtolemysNeedle · 26/07/2015 11:01

People do understand, but you could apply the logic you are using to so many things.

Why does anyone eat Heinz beans when they could eat own brand and put the savings in a charity tin? Why does anyone live in a three bedroomed house when they could manage in a two and give the money they save to a homeless person?

Or is it only things that you deem to be superfluous used by rich and successful people that invokes that feeling in you?

cashewnutty · 26/07/2015 11:02

vagabond I think people do understand but also understand that this is all very well in some utopian world but in reality this doesn't happen.

People can spend what they want on whatever they want. It seems MC already gives to charity. Possibly JP does too.

Loads of rich people spend so much more on things. 300 million pound flats in London. Private jets. Whatever.

There is little point in getting angsty about one pop diva's necklace.

Vagabond · 26/07/2015 11:02

Badlad…..i don't get your point.

There is no outrage.

OP posts:
Mrsjayy · 26/07/2015 11:03

But life is unequal she sings songs gets paid a shit load of money and has shiny things she may donate some of her millions and still wear baubles round herneck.

Vagabond · 26/07/2015 11:04

Yes, I KNOW all that……

There is no rationale for how I feel. So, I guess IABU. :(
