To see pics of Mariah Carey's new necklace all over media and think that life is just un-fucking-fair

I don't like Mariah Carey to start with. I possibly hate James Packer even more.

Their alliance, played all over the media, makes me feel sick.

I just hate the inequality in life. A bauble to MC could save so many lives if it were converted to something good.

I agree with you but would only admit as much to my socialist-inclined friends and occasionally the internet.

It isn't about the fact that she's earned it (though you could definitely argue against that cause all she's done is write/sing a handful of songs), it's about the fact that the mega-rich have way too much money to even get rid of spend, so they spend it on ridiculous shit like a $500,000 trinket.

If the rich (especially those rich for arbitrary reasons like MC) accepted their responsibilities to others, there would be less inequality in the world.

cleanmyhouse · 25/07/2015 18:20

Yes it is unfair. Why the hell should someone who just happens to have a big wobbly voice earn more than anyone else. We live in a fucked up world with fucked up values.

AuntyMag10 · 25/07/2015 18:43

Yabu, jealousy is so ugly. It's unfair but there is zero you can do about it just like countless other things. So it's pointless wasting any emotions being jealous.

Sallyingforth · 25/07/2015 18:51

That kitten necklace must really sparkle - think of all those cats' eyes in the road.
But what do they do with the rest of the cats?

ilovechristmas1 · 25/07/2015 19:06

good luck to them

i would no way want to be Mariah, imo her life is a goldfish bowl amd always will be

just because the necklace is expensive probably means very little to her as her life is one of wealth and excess

in relation its probably the same as me recieving a necklace worth £100

emotionsecho · 25/07/2015 19:06

Mariah Carey is rich because people buy what she is selling so she has 'earnt' it.

When Michael Jackson made his mega millions in the 80's, everyone said he'd never spend it in his lifetime but he was trying to stave off bankruptcy before he died.

clean it may seem like fucked up values but the general public are the ones who propel these people into stratospheric stardom and hence mega money.

No-one ever promised life would be fair unfortunately.

Tinkypoooooooo · 25/07/2015 19:08

Her boyfriend is a billionaire so 500k to him is nothing but yes there is more they could do with the money in regards to charity but then its their money.
Ifi ever became a millionaire or billionaire i would defiantly help others and not spend 500k on jewels but not everyone is the same

ouryve · 25/07/2015 19:12

I've not seen it. It's a necklace. Why should I give a shit about a piece of metal unless there's something I'm missing here?

pigsDOfly · 25/07/2015 19:15

Yes OP, and I expect her house is bigger than yours as well.

Are you saying that by not living in a bigger house than yours and having more things than you she could solve world poverty?

I suppose if we all lived in small mud huts - not that I'm implying you live in a mud hut - and rode bicycles life would be more equal, but I fail to see what it's got to do with anyone else what these people spend their money on.

If you don't like reading about these people don't buy newspapers and magazines that print this sort of rubbish. I'm sure it's not all over all the media, only certain sections of it.

Stripeysocksarecool · 25/07/2015 19:18

Cigars

What responsibilities do the rich have to others? I don't get why just because someone is rich they are somehow responsible for other people. Celebs like Mariah have become wealthy because enough people have paid to listen to her singing, bought CDs etc. She didn't make her money by forcing people to work in salt mines for a penny a day, so how come she has these special responsibilities?

Panzee · 25/07/2015 19:21

They paid half a mil for a necklace? There's truly one born every minute. OP console yourself with the thought that you can't be as thick as that. :o

cigarsofthepharaoh · 25/07/2015 19:21

Everyone has responsibilities to others. It's called being a decent human being. It's why we have a welfare state.

Those with a ridiculous amount of money have extra responsibilities.

MrsTerryPratchett · 25/07/2015 19:23

Mariah Carey grew up in poverty, with a split family, alienated from one of her parents. Racism featured a lot. Her sister was in prostitution and is HIV positive. She also gives a lot to charity and seems like a pretty good egg.

Also, it's a very pretty necklace and it seems to bring her joy. It was massively expensive so less likely to be a conflict diamond.

Unless you give every spare penny to charity and never eat a chocolate bar or indulge in any way, leave her to it. I sort of agreed about the 175 quid candles being a waste.

Blu · 25/07/2015 19:24

How much richer than you is unfair?

How much richer than a woman who has to walk 8 miles to a well for water and whose children are starving is unfair?

Is it only people richer than any one individual (you!) who are viewed as being the ones who need their wealth re-distributing?

In the big global levelling we wouldn't have the wildly wealthy, but many of us ordinary UK folk might find our own standards drop.

Enjoyingthepeace · 25/07/2015 19:33

yabu. As long as she lays all her taxes, then what she does with her money is her business.

I am jealous of just one thing when it comes to people spending money. Plush cars, fancy houses, amazing holidays, stunning jewellery? I honestly and truly don't give a damn.

Those that send their children to really good private school? I'm green with jealously. I want it so badly for my children I could scream.

LadyFairfaxSake · 25/07/2015 19:42

She has a new necklace. However she also has to go through life being Mariah Carey which, having met her, isn't good.

SurlyCue · 25/07/2015 19:45

Please OP could you explain what exactly you find unfair about MC having this necklace?

Stripeysocksarecool · 25/07/2015 19:46

Cigars, provided MC has paid her taxes she's met her responsibilities. I don't know anything about her, so no idea if she pays UK tax, but if she did I'm sure the amount she would have to contribute would be substantial, and would make a significant contribution to state coffers. Not sure what responsibilities you think she has beyond that.

Bambambini · 25/07/2015 19:47

Yes, life is hugely unfair and it's all fucked up. I'm not selfless enough though to give away my worldly goods to make it fairer.

TripTrapTripTrapOverTheBridge · 25/07/2015 19:56

Tinky just because someone buys something for themselves doesn't mean they don't help others. High earners, millionaires etc ALL have to stump up more than the rest of us, all of which goes to support the rest of us. Yet people still whinge and wants even those low down on that list to pay more and more 'because the have it' and always without any gratefulness. Then some begrudge them buying something themselves with money they have earned?! Seriously. I'm all for distribution and helping others, but at a low level remember that every 40% tax payer is working 40% of their hours to pay for everyone else in the country...

TTWK · 25/07/2015 22:15

Blu hits the nail on the head. The average annual income worldwide is about £6200 a year. But lots of people earn millions so the modal income (the most common) is about £900 a year. Less than £100/month.

So OP, I'm guessing that you are probably very rich by comparison. I bet as a minimum you have 4 taps in your house, probably a lot more. How can you justify such ridiculous extravagance when millions of people don't even have a standpipe within 30 miles of their village, and are forced to drink unclean water.

Becauseicannes · 25/07/2015 22:29

I just can't bring myself to get worked up about Mariah Carey's love life.

WoonerismSpit · 25/07/2015 22:39

He looks like a slimmer version of that fella from The Chase

Salmotrutta · 25/07/2015 22:45

Actually I feel rather guilty.

Our mortgage is paid off.

We go on furrin holidays.

Tell me what I have to do OP.

emotionsecho · 25/07/2015 22:55

I'm guessing by the lack of input by the OP on this thread that any answer to that will be a long time coming Salmo. Obviously the OP didn't start this thread for a discussion/sharing of views quite what it was started for I have no idea.
