Its a footballers and cheerleaders theme, shes a toddler, it just makes me feel yeuch.
I was thinking of sending her as a footballer, but really not sure if I want her to go at all...its just so not girl power.
But then is she missing out due to her mums weird ideologies?
any thoughts?

Cheerleading is massively athletic! I went to school in the U.S. I absolutely loved the pep assemblies when the cheerleaders and male yell leaders used to do their fantastic acrobatics and brilliant dancing.

That said our women's football team are bloody fantastic, I'd probably send her as one of them!

ToadsJustFellFromTheSky · 24/07/2015 18:33

Also if you think that cheerleading is all about standing on the side and shaking your "tushies in appreciation" then you don't know what cheerleading is.

CaptainHolt · 24/07/2015 18:33

yes I dont know why it cant just be a footballer party for boys and girls

Because that's not what the kid whose party it is wants. Maybe s/he likes cheerleading but her Mum, rightly, thought that other parents might find a football costume easier.

Cheerleading is not to my tastes but it's an amazing sport. It's a shame people dismiss it as tushie waving. You could argue that they should just have a cheerleader party because it takes real skill, strength, discipline and teamwork and football is kicking a ball around a field.

Groovee · 24/07/2015 18:34

How old is the birthday child?

CaptainHolt · 24/07/2015 18:36

Tell me they are shitter than footballers. I dare you.

MadamArcatiAgain · 24/07/2015 18:37

Cheerleaders do not lead cheering for sports teams in this country. It is gymnastics discipline

MrsTerryPratchett · 24/07/2015 18:38

Most dangerous sport in the US. The football players should be cheering them.

Athenaviolet · 24/07/2015 18:38

I wouldn't send did to a party like that.

Lots of primary schools have an after school cheer club you know.

SantanaLopez · 24/07/2015 18:43

I think it sounds cute.

TinklyLittleLaugh · 24/07/2015 18:44

Cheerleading needs rebranding and another name I think.

DS was invited to a pirates and princesses party. I begged him to go in drag, (he is cool enough to carry it off) but he couldn't resist a bit of swashbuckling. There were lots of girl pirates there though.

DinosaursRoar · 24/07/2015 18:44

Who the fuck does fancy dress themed parties for 1 year olds?!? Seriously, the 1 year olds don't care, it's just forcing parents to buy additional clothes for one specific party rather than send them in their normal 'party' clothes.

It's not like it's halloween and you might well be able to pick up a cheap costume in the supermarket, or a theme where you might have something in the wardrobe already.

Avoid this family, they are clearly loons. It's only going to get worse as the DCs get older.

DinosaursRoar · 24/07/2015 18:44

or send her in a normal party dress.

DinosaursRoar · 24/07/2015 18:46

or shorts and t-shirt and trainers carrying a football.

Your DD won't care or notice. The party child won't care or notice. I bet most of the other parents will have completely ignored the theme for 1 year olds.

starlight2007 · 24/07/2015 18:46

A one year old will neither be affected or care what she wears.

UrethraFranklin1 · 24/07/2015 18:51

You get male cheerleaders and female footballers, so I wouldn't think it was gender specific

You're not actually serious with this point, are you?

morelikeguidelines · 24/07/2015 18:52

I agree with all the pps that you can just send her as a footballer, and men can be cheerleaders etc

However also think the weirdest thing is having a fancy dress party for one year old!

skrumle · 24/07/2015 18:54

i totally accept that cheerleaders are skilled and hard working and athletic and it is a (dangerous) sport. but seriously, google "cheerleaders" and click on images and then google "footballers" and click on images - in the real world the image of cheerleaders is attractive women who shake their tushies in appreciation of men playing sport...

PrimalLass · 24/07/2015 18:55

Did no one else read the Cheerleaders books? They were like Sweet Valley High but less shit much better.

formerbabe · 24/07/2015 18:57

I reckon lots of girls there will be dressed as footballers...mainly because it's easier as many parents will already have some type of football kit knocking around the house somewhere.

I agree it's a weird theme.

emotionsecho · 24/07/2015 19:09

There are a surprising number of male Hollywood actors who were cheerleaders, but it is stereotyped as girls with pom poms.

PrimalLass - I loved those. I wanted to be Mary Ellen. Preston Tilford would be my boyfriend lol (although Patrick the bin man was supposed to be cute).

LilyMayViolet · 24/07/2015 20:40

One of the male cheerleaders at my school was the actor Paul Rudd, the one who married Phoebe in friends. He was brilliant.
