I had monkey when I was little. He's since been adopted by 6yo dd. As he's 30+ he's lost an eye, is a bit baldy and much of his stuffing is missing.
I identified a toy hospital and sent off some photos. The response came back that he was "mass produced in the far east" and basically isn't the same calibre as many of their clientele. So no inpatient stay for a small stuffing procedure :(
Aibu to be shocked and discusted, genuinely slightly upset on behalf of a toy that is quite special to me and dd (ok I know iabu there) and ask whether anyone can recommend a hospital dealing with a lower class of toy?

Have you tried the clinic that did Elton for the fur issue? I expect they take anyone even Wayne Rooney if they can pay.

Hissy · 23/07/2015 23:56

My DS monkey is jellycat discontinued. does that make him special???

He's only about 9yo, but very scruffy loved

cocobean2805 · 23/07/2015 23:59

I feel your pain, DH made fun of my childhood doll the other day (we were clearing the loft. I didnt take it to heart as this was from a man who had a pet cactus.) Find a local tailor/haberdashery type place and see if they have a seamstress that could aid in a fluffy medical intervention? I would also like to see a picture Smile

Idontseeanydragons · 24/07/2015 00:00

Poor monkey Sad who cares where he was made??
Try a haberdashers or fabric shop if you have one near you, ours offers clothing repairs among other things.

MistressMerryWeather · 24/07/2015 00:02

I was having a little google on help for monkeys little hair problem when I came across this site.

Uncle Bearsac

He's an agony aunt for troubled teddies. Perhaps yours could write in about his rejection?

Zebda · 24/07/2015 00:03

OP, he looks nice and clean. I'll say that for him Smile

We have a very thread bare Moo Cow whose insides keep trying to escape from her throat...its distressing but we just keep sewing her up. I think the idea of making a new external layer (knitted jumper) is a good one in your circumstances

HarrietSchulenberg · 24/07/2015 00:17

I hope that whoever repairs Monkey does a better job than my grandma did on Blue Ted. I nodded off for a little nap at her house one day, clutching Blue Ted, and awoke to a Horrorshow. She'd darned his little blue, holey face but ran out of blue wool (wool!) so gave him a v-shaped brown woolly quiff a la Elvis (who'd just died).
Still loved him but it took a while to get used to his mildly horrific new look.
He now sits on a little chair on my dressing table, getting dustier each minute as I daren't clean him in case he disintegrates.
He used to scare ExH, which makes him all the more special Grin.

Breebree · 24/07/2015 00:22

If you have Facebook search laura love at 13 stitches she does a pop up teddy hospital in colchester and I'm sure she'd have a go if you could post him. Good luck.

minkGrundy · 24/07/2015 00:27

Hariet I want a picture!!

HarrietSchulenberg · 24/07/2015 00:38

Happy to oblige. The brown was much, much darker in the 70s and his little blue face was, well, bluer Smile

Primafacie · 24/07/2015 00:54

Harriet, if it makes you feel any better about Blue Ted, I had this doll when I was very little [warning: seriously creepy]

Primafacie · 24/07/2015 00:55

Click on the link for a video of what she did. The stuff of horror flicks, I tell you. :o

HelenMirrensHair · 24/07/2015 00:58

How very fucking dare they.............................

ShockShockShockShockShockShockShockShockShockShock

NoSquirrels · 24/07/2015 01:08

That's MY monkey!! Stealth, how very dare you have the same mass-produced in the Far East much-loved stuffed toy as me!

I banned the DC from adopting him, TBH. I let youngest play gently with him, and I have sewn up a few holes recently. I am still a little bit traumatised from the time when I was about 10 and my "friend" strung him up like a hangman, and I let her because I was too embarrassed to admit how much I cared. Poor monkey.

minkGrundy · 24/07/2015 01:11

Blue ted is gorgeous. He bares the scars of being loved too much. Doll is horrific.

minkGrundy · 24/07/2015 01:15

My somewhat overloved bear. The kids are not allowed anything more than an hard stare from him.

SilverNightFairy · 24/07/2015 01:17

Oh I'm so sorry your lovely little monkey was dissed by bourgeois toy hospital! They would have fits if I inquired about my son's sweet bear bear, won by his nan in one of those claw prize machines. I would say his origins are spotty indeed! He is almost 19 years old, all his fuzz has been loved off and looks as if he has grown mold ( he hasn't! ) We keep him under lock now as the cats have kidnapped him before and he can't survive any rough feline treatment.

retrorobot · 24/07/2015 02:19

Where the hell does the moron at the toy hospital think monkeys come from? Carlisle? It's no surprise that your monkey comes from the far east. Remember the 1970s/80s TV series - monkey? Monkeys have been part of Chinese culture for millenia. Tell the toy hospital that you'd do them for racial/ethnic discrimination if they don't get a lot more enthusiastic about treatment.

Ludoole · 24/07/2015 03:14

Snotty hospital Angry
I have a 33yo rabbit who still sleeps on my bed wears orange cabbage patch kid clothes (to hide her squashed but once gloriously fluffy tail) and a blue dickie bow (to hide what looks llike a tracheotomy).
She is as beautiful and as much loved now as she was when my lovely nanny sent her to me when i was 6 Smile

Toy Hospital Screening Scandal
Monkey refused treatment after hospital sees photograph

That's today's front page news headline. (I'm too lacking in sleep to think of something witty)

But in all honestly why is being mass produced in the Far East a reason for not fixing something. Is it the Monkey's mass production or his Far Easternness that is the cause.

Exactly how many toy patients can they possibly get if toys mass produced in the Far East are excluded.

StealthPolarBear · 24/07/2015 07:25

I love all these replies thank you! Retro I think you're on to something. Ethnic discrimination plus also on the basis of family size. Yes he probably had 8 or 9 brothers or sisters , so if that counts as "mass produced", well so was my grandma.
I'm going to return to this thread, particularly some of the suggestions, in the meantime here's another photo.

monkey looking for love
Male monkey looking for nice lady monkey (or man monkey, he's curious) for romantic swings through the trees.
Hobbies: hanging upside down from door handles by the tail, having birthday tea parties.
Bad habits: breaking wind loudly.
Genuine, own eye, fur, long flexible tail. Come and join me for romantic days snuggled under a carelessly thrown back duvet.

I have just remembered that while I can't sew, DH can. And he's a perfectionist. This monkey will be fully anatomically correct and indistinguishable from a love one by the time he's finished. Dd will also be middle aged, but you can't rush these things.

Littleorangecat · 24/07/2015 07:58

Oh my word! Your monkey, is the same as my blue dog!! However my blue dog is in a much worse state that monkey. He had x2 full knitted suits made by my grandma in the 80's as he was so well loved his stuffing was (is) totally falling out.
He's happily retired, wrapped in a blanket in my drawer, a very elderly well loved blue dog.
'Mass produced in the far east' indeed! I am seething at the insult tbh!

Littleorangecat · 24/07/2015 08:01

Sorry got confused /excited about the pics above, my toy is the same as the blue one! Ps/ still outraged in your behalf over the insult Grin
