AIBU for washing fruit with washing up liquid?

So to wash fruit I put washing up liquid on it, swish it around a bit in water, and then carefully rinse it all off.

This seemed perfectly normal until today when a bunch of people stared at me in horror saying WTAF are you DOING!?!?

Apparently it's irredeemably weird and my fruit must taste of washing up liquid (it doesn't, that would be rank, I rinse it completely).

I also only do it to fruit with a skin, not stuff like strawberries and raspberries. They just get water.

So? Am I a total fruit-washing freak? Grin

I think that's a bit weird (sorry!)
Just rinse it under the tap!

SecretNutellaFix · 23/07/2015 18:34

The water on it's own is enough to get rid of any chemical traces on the skin of the fruit which is why you wash them. So why are you putting more chemicals on to it? It defeats the whole object of the exercise, surely?

maras2 · 23/07/2015 18:34

Very odd.Are you germ phobic?Even so if that's what you like doing then do it.No one else's business.

PyjamasLlamas · 23/07/2015 18:35

What like Apples?? This is beyond weird, though I'm sure a whole horde of Mnetters will now descend to say they do it too just like they did in the no washing hands after nappy changes thread but in the total opposite direction!

FirstWeTakeManhattan · 23/07/2015 18:35

Why do you do it OP? It is a bit weird, yup.

Salmotrutta · 23/07/2015 18:37

I bet you rinse your mince too don't you?

Wink
Sirzy · 23/07/2015 18:37

That's odd and must leave a taste?

thatstoast · 23/07/2015 18:37

Yabu. Do you bleach your chicken?

Notso · 23/07/2015 18:37

It is odd. If you don't have enough washing up to do feel free to come round here and do mine.

Lagoonablue · 23/07/2015 18:38

Actually you can buy a special fruit washing liquid.

AlisonBlunderland · 23/07/2015 18:41

"Do you bleach your chicken?"

Is that a euphemism?

TheWildRumpyPumpus · 23/07/2015 18:41

Oooh give us a list of fruits please.

This is fascinating.

Sgtmajormummy · 23/07/2015 18:42

Half a teaspoon of bicarb in a bowl of water is not poisonous but disinfects. Rinse well. Good for getting rid of "unwanted guests" like slugs on your lettuce, too.

CrohnicallyAspie · 23/07/2015 18:42

lagoona are you sure that's for fruit, and it doesn't mean fruit scented?

toffeeboffin · 23/07/2015 18:42

You are a bit of a freak.

Better than not washing though (that's me)

BolshierAyraStark · 23/07/2015 18:42

Very strange, why would you do that?

PatriciaHolm · 23/07/2015 18:43

What an odd thing to do.

Plus - if you are peeling them anyway, like a banana, why are you washing them anyway?

DoItTooJulia · 23/07/2015 18:43

Why were you washing fruit in front of a 'bunch' of people?? Smile Wink

toffeeboffin · 23/07/2015 18:43

(that's me) is supposed to be crossed out, obviously.

Where the bloody hell is the strike through button on this computer...

toffeeboffin · 23/07/2015 18:44

Good one, Julia : )

GingerFoxInAT0phat · 23/07/2015 18:44

Fruits lucky to get a kick of water in this house.

Whipnaenae · 23/07/2015 18:44

Most fruit will have already been washed with chemicals, so why would you want to wash off the chemicals with more chemicals? I use either lemon juice or white vinegar (diluted) if I can be bothered, but usually just a cursory rinse under the tap.

GingerFoxInAT0phat · 23/07/2015 18:44

Lick that should be Hmm

FurtherSupport · 23/07/2015 18:44

I think it probably is odd, but fruit washing has always puzzled me.

You woudln't think anything else is properly clean (enough to out in your mouth!) after a quick rinse under the tap, but that's the way we wash fruit, that's been fertilised and treated with god knows what.

emotionsecho · 23/07/2015 18:45

Yes, odd.
