AIBU for washing fruit with washing up liquid?

So to wash fruit I put washing up liquid on it, swish it around a bit in water, and then carefully rinse it all off.

This seemed perfectly normal until today when a bunch of people stared at me in horror saying WTAF are you DOING!?!?

Apparently it's irredeemably weird and my fruit must taste of washing up liquid (it doesn't, that would be rank, I rinse it completely).

I also only do it to fruit with a skin, not stuff like strawberries and raspberries. They just get water.

So? Am I a total fruit-washing freak? Grin

As long as you don't wash raw chicken you go right ahead. I wouldn't wash fruit in that way, but I'm sure you aren't force feeding it to anyone then it's up to you.

The5DayChicken · 23/07/2015 18:46

You are effectively sanitising your fruit. How very strange.

Yes, you are weird. HTH Smile

Sleepybeanbump · 23/07/2015 18:50

Believe it or not I'm completely not a germ phobe. I'm very slatternly in most things. Generally in the 'a bit of dirt is good for you' camp.

I think I do it because I think that's just what you do to clean stuff. You wouldn't wash your hands with just water. And my mother does it. It just seemed normal. Clearly not!!!! Grin

I think it's ok. I just wash with water. I have seen fruit wash in a health food store though but don't know if it's like washing up liquid. Makes perfect sense to me to get the chemicals off and germs from shops and packing plants especially if you buy them loose. I would think as long as it's rinsed well it'll do you no harm, after all we wash our crockery and cutlery in it!

PyjamasLlamas · 23/07/2015 18:53

But it's obviously pointless when you know you can't apply the rule to all fruit like strawberries. Do you think the apple is now more hygienic to eat than a strawberry?

Happfeet2911 · 23/07/2015 18:56

Definitely odd, sorry!

zombiesheep · 23/07/2015 19:01

Yes OP! I do this too.

I find fruit HAS to be washed with washing up liquid, washing it with just plain water doesn't get rid of the foul pesticide taste that causes my tongue and lips to swell and become itchy.

Completely normal IMO, everyone else must just have more hardcore mouths than mine.

The thought of not washing fruit in washing up liquid makes me gag a bit Hmm.

However this is only true for apples, plums, even grapes but not so for strawberries, blueberries etc.

MistyMeena · 23/07/2015 19:02

OP I do this with apples...my reasoning is they often feel a bit sticky or waxy and plain water doesn't seem to help.

I don't rinse mince or chicken btw :-D

ovumahead · 23/07/2015 19:05

Not weird. Sensible! Washing up liquid lifts dirt and chemicals off surfaces and then washes away completely. Water alone isn't enough to get rid of the awful chemicals that are used on fruit and veg these days. You're not mad! Mind you half the time I can't be arsed but hey ho.

Dynomite · 23/07/2015 19:08

YANBU! Especially with fruit that you choose yourself and put in a bag. Imagine how many people before you have touched it, sneezed on it etc. You can't wash that away with a bit of water.

I do it with most fruit. And most people I know do too.

mrsdavidbowie · 23/07/2015 19:10

I don't wash fruit. Or salad stuff. Ever.

EllieFAntspoo · 23/07/2015 19:10

That is the weirdest thing I've ever heard.

Have you tried incantations? Use a pen to draw a pentagram on the fruit and light a tea candle beside it. It'll drive away the eavil spirits that cause upset stomachs, and it's easy enough to carry a pen and a tea candle in your handbag.

Homemadeapplepie · 23/07/2015 19:15

Not weird at all-especially apples and fruits like lemons if you are zesting them.

FranBrodie · 23/07/2015 19:16

I'm with you OP, at least with grapes. I hate that greasy dust they have!
And, to the "OMG! Chemicals!" bunch, don't you wash your dishes either? (BTW everything is chemicals, including you Hmm)

VulcanWoman · 23/07/2015 19:18

I do the same as you OP, as someone else mentioned, waxing and sticky with just water. At least do it with water unless you wanna eat insect piss and shit, and chemical spray residue.

DamsonInDistress · 23/07/2015 19:19

Anything with a wax coating like apples, and citrus fruit for zesting, I always wash with the tiniest bit of washing up liquid as water alone does not remove the wax. Anything else gets a rinsing with cold water and a pat dry with paper towel. Strawberries are one of the highest pesticide residue fruits you'll come across, they must always be thoroughly rinsed.

VulcanWoman · 23/07/2015 19:19

Plus dust/dirt.

VulcanWoman · 23/07/2015 19:21

Yeah, I heard that about strawberries, never seen organic one's though.

tigerdriverII · 23/07/2015 19:22

IIRC my copy of "what to expect when you're expecting " recommended this during pregnancy. It was what made me give up any parenting manual, ever Grin

DarthVadersTailor · 23/07/2015 19:23

Sounds completely unnecessary OP and frankly a bit weird, certainly never met anyone who does this before! But if that's the way you like it who am I to judge? At least washing up liquid is a low tox substance so even if you did ingest some (and you say you can't taste it so I'd assume it's well washed off) it wouldn't do much harm at all.

What started you washing fruit this way? Any particular reason at all?

Pastaeater · 23/07/2015 19:32

Weird.

Superlovely · 23/07/2015 19:35

Do you use lemon washing up liquid? Or strawberry?

VulcanWoman · 23/07/2015 19:35

Think of all the people that handle the fruit before you get it, it's nearly as bad as money.
