I have no clothes!
Four nights in Venice, flying Monday!
I am in a complete panic, I have nothing even remotely stylish to take with me. I only want to take a capsule with me as its only four nights.
What sort of things should I be shopping for tomorrow? Size 20-22, 5ft7, size 7wide feet. Very much a jeans and t-shirt kind of girls usually. :/ help me so that I don't start crying in the middle of town tomorrow!

I freaking love wonderfit stuff, so comfy!

30andtired · 17/07/2015 20:53

Hi OP,

I went to Venice last weekend and it's way too hot for jeans. I also imagined lots of beautifully dressed stylish Italians but the truth is no one is looking at what you wear, everyone is dressed cool and comfortable (especially shoes as lots of walking or climbing in and out of boats).

It's very, very busy there, millions of tourists.

I wore loose maxi dresses with sandals or linen shorts with vest tops. Pack sunglasses, sun cream, a hat and a secure bag that goes across your body.

Not many dress up for the evenings and I'd describe it as very casual.

The shopping is fabulous but expensive shops and the food is delicious. I averaged 4 ice creams a day Blush

Have fun

VegasIsBest · 17/07/2015 21:00

White trousers. Not linen as they bag and sag.

I like M&S white jeans. Plus a top, big necklace and comfy Sandles.
And big sunglasses

Glass or two of prosecco and you'll feel great :-)))

Have a wonderful time.

spottybottycream · 17/07/2015 21:00

I am really relieved to hear your reassurances. I was worried sick that I was going to stick out like a sore thumb! I do want some new bits though and I agree that jeans are too hot!
Do you think I could kit myself out at Asda? I only really have maximum £150

I live a few hours away and we're in the middle of a heat wave. It's 33c at 10pm! 38 during the day. I would die in jeans. Best option are very thin cotton trousers and vests. Don't forget a good face sunblock and a water bottle carrier.

Enjoy Smile

wtfisgoingonhere · 17/07/2015 21:07

Not read whole thread but echoing other posters, take regular clothes and DEFINITELY comfortable shoes.

The first time I went I was as worried as you but everyone wears all sorts, but it's not super chic dress code.

Went back in January and took dh as a birthday surprise took regular clothes and had awesome time

Just comfy shoes (2 pairs to rotate ideally) as we walk a lot but walked MILES in venice (without planning to just ambling and admiring) to the point our feet hurt and legs ached!

Enjoy, im very jealous!

Oh and buy a 7 2 hour/ 1 week (depending on flight times) ticket for the vaporetto - well worth it

AlpacaPicnic · 17/07/2015 21:16

And, you know what... You're never going to see those people again! Be comfy, be cool and have a great time!

fastdaytears · 17/07/2015 21:19

£150 is loads! Do Asda if that's what you usually like of course! Only think is it might be worth spending a reasonable chunk of your budget on shoes as cheap, new shoes plus heat and loss of walking could be painful.

LizardBreath · 17/07/2015 21:20

I have been in Venice / Verona / Garda this week, it is absolutely boiling! Whatever you pack make sure nice natural fabrics and that you're comfy in them. I packed when a bit tipsy and made some serious mistakes!

WestEast · 17/07/2015 21:20

I saw a woman carrying a chihuahua in a slight in Venice. Just saying.

WestEast · 17/07/2015 21:21

LizardBreath · 17/07/2015 21:22

Just read about stylish comments, it's all tourists there, wearing every outfit conceivable and also looking a bit hot and bothered. Really don't worry about standing out, honestly there's all sorts!!

fastdaytears · 17/07/2015 21:26

WestEnd amazing! A very well housetrained one I hope or that would be an issue for me. I'm not precious but...

OP you're going to have the best time! I'm so excited for you and a teeny bit jealous

Jelliebabe1 · 17/07/2015 21:30

Find a yours shop near you! They're great! I got all my clothes for holiday there. Shorts, light trousers and maxi dresses. And tops to match! Enjoy your lovely holiday

SweetCharityBeginsAtHome · 17/07/2015 21:30

Cheap and cheerful maxi dresses are your friends here. You'd never wear them at home because they're impractical but you're going to be swanning around in sodding Venice.

Here you go - tell me you wouldn't feel fab in that. A couple of things like that, a wrap/shawl for your shoulders for drinking Cinzano on the terrace in the evening, and a pair of really comfy flat sandals with bouncy soles - Clarks probably your best bet.

SweetCharityBeginsAtHome · 17/07/2015 21:33

However .... that does depend on whether you're happy to walk for miles in a dress with bare legs. If you'd find that uncomfortable then cotton/linen trousers are the way.

bigbluebus · 17/07/2015 21:38

Definitely don't wear jeans. I was in Venice last week - it was 33 C and humid and we were sweltering in shorts and t-shirts. The temperature is going up to 36C next week. Loose clothing all the way and definitely cotton fabrics. Don't plan on wearing the same outfit twice either - everything we wore was soaked through with sweat. We paid 15 Euros each to go into an art gallery because it had air conditioning - and we don't particularly like art Grin.

Flat comfortable sandals are a must as there are lots of steps and you will do a fair amount of walking. Don't have a large suitcase either. We saw many people dragging suitcases up the streets on wheels and then having to carry them up the steps over bridges and down the other side. There are no roads.

It is a beautiful city - have a fab time.

ohohohitsmagic · 17/07/2015 23:28

Something like this with a denim shirt you could wear on two days?

ohohohitsmagic · 17/07/2015 23:29

and then your nicest bag and a pair of comfy flip flops or Birkenstocks,

TheABC · 17/07/2015 23:38

Another vote for floaty maxi dresses from sainsburys. Take a look at defendants as they have so nice pieces in, as well. At the end of the day, if you look and feel cool and comfortable, you are as fashionable as you need to be.

Enjoy Venice - I am jealous!

GuiltyAsAGirlCanBe · 18/07/2015 06:41

Btw, Italian mosquitoes are evil, so take strength 5 jungle formula...

Mygardenistoobig · 18/07/2015 06:51

Buy a couple of maxi dresses.

Birkenstock sandals are great for wide feet.

PoppyFleur · 18/07/2015 06:57

The sales are on, it's a perfect time to go shopping. Venice is beautiful but it's going to be really hot, so avoid jeans. Even at night it is still likely to be about 25c around 10/11pm.

My suggestions, comfy pair of walking shoes suitable for day through to evening.
Sun shades & wide brimmed hat.
Cropped trousers, maxi summer dress, bold print skirt and wear your usual t'shirts with them. Go for colour & you will feel glam, avoid white & beige.

Hi there. Mine was the previous thread about a surprise city break and having nothing to wear. Having recently faced the fear (armed with a few new items thanks to the tips on here) I really would say that no one was as well dressed as I thought. I didn't stick out like a sore thumb despite being hopeless with clothes and just being an untidy looking person generally. The key really was feeling comfortable and SHOES. I walked miles.

One day we were on our feet from 8am until midnight and one friend was in tears by 10am, ditched her sandals and bought a pair of trainners (which she wore with a linen skirt - no one batted an eyelid )and she was able to enjoy the day.

It's easy for me to say as my wonderful weekend is over but by a few new bits from asda , be comfy and have a wonderful wonderful time. Wish I could do mine again now!

WutheringTights · 18/07/2015 08:15

Wide leg trousers all the way. www.asos.com/women/trousers-leggings/cat/pgecategory.aspx?cid=2640&via=top#state=Rf989%3D4995%40Rf-400%3D13511&parentID=Rf-400&pge=0&pgeSize=36&sort=-1

Will deliver tomorrow if you order by 5pm today and they're really good on returns (free) so if you change your mind or don't like them when they arrive you can send them back when you get home.
