Facebook is swarming with people saying how much they deserve it and other people patting them on the back. It seems like the world and his wife are in education or SAHM's with 6 glorious weeks ahead of them. Apart from a one week holiday I have a juggling timetable of various childcare arrangements to run to and fro from.

I am very concerned about where we'll be in 5 yrs time, and what experience of school my DS will have.

Teach him yourself. Can you really do a worse job than state schooling? I don't think so. You've been inside the classroom. Can you honestly say it is a good environment for your child to learn and grow in?

noblegiraffe · 17/07/2015 23:21

This year I've had to attend the funeral of a student, and teach maths to kids who are dealing with cancer, who are self-harming, have attempted suicide, who are are suffering from severe anxiety, and who have had a mental breakdown.

It's been a tough year, this one. Don't fucking tell me it's not the real world.

Wine to all teachers. Let's enjoy the holidays.

Wolfiefan · 17/07/2015 23:22

Ellie. I'm guessing if you have kids then they don't actually go to school?

This is true Flat. Please point me to the hundreds of threads complaining about those profession.

FlatWhiteToGo · 17/07/2015 23:23

Loki - please also help yourself to my cake and prosecco Grin.

Just one thing though...surely none of us can defend estate agents?!?!

EllieFAntspoo · 17/07/2015 23:25

Culture ... and DS won't have to eat all that shit they feed them either. Best of luck whatever you choose.

FlatWhiteToGo · 17/07/2015 23:25

Noble - that's absolutely awful. I really hope you're ok x

CultureSucksDownWords · 17/07/2015 23:27

Do you know, I would rather send him to a state school and get stuck in there if need be. Me teaching my DS at home might be good for him but it doesn't exactly help support and improve our state schools. Plus, I'm a secondary school teacher! Primary is not my area of expertise. I'd do it if I really had to but it's not my first choice.

I'm also very well aware that as the child of financially stable, educated and engaged parents, my son is fairly well insulated from the variance in teaching quality he might experience.

HeisenbergSaysHello · 17/07/2015 23:28

My 6 year old brought home all his school books and stuff on Thursday, i sat and looked through all the work he had done, since starting year 1 til finishing year 1 and thought to myself, how on earth do teachers do it? How do they have the patience to do it?

His 2 teachers have been amazing and i really hope they enjoy their break

ThoseAwfulCurtains · 17/07/2015 23:29

If it bothers you that much OP, why not stay off Facebook etc for a week or so till the joy has died down? They're public places and you'll have a hard job policing them but you can choose to do something else with your time and not allow it to get on your tits.

Nettymaniaa · 17/07/2015 23:30

I think you need to become a teacher to experience the joy. I am in work next week as I have a lot more to do before I can stop and yes I have broken up. I am in school by 7.20 every say. I leave late. It's my job. I do it. If you want to come and do it too you will be welcomed with open arms. What's stopping you. There is a looming teacher recruitment crisis and when you join us you might see it differently. I would love you to join us. It's not the job it once was. I have been doing it for 25 years. That makes me pretty much a veteran. I work with students who have complex needs. I was inspired today by a photo of a student with all his certificates. I didn't get to see him personally as I had to be elsewhereI had tears in my eyes as one family who have struggled until they came to our school left picking up their daughter for the last day of her school life. Come and join us. But let me warn you the worst bit about the job. Working so hard and having people who don't know the job tell you how crap and lazy you are.

Nettymaniaa · 17/07/2015 23:32

Oh and when my child was younger I used to have lots of other non teacher friends kids dropping round my house often to play with mine to help them during the long months. Just as extra friends and to alleviate stress.

echt · 17/07/2015 23:33

The difference is that most of those jobs don't seem to be open to public vilification all the time.
Banking... Politics... Estate Agent…

Ellie Please point us in the direction of threads vilifying those professions, and compare them to the ones that do the same to teachers on MN year after year after year.

Oh, I forgot, you don't do evidence do you?

EllieFAntspoo · 17/07/2015 23:37

I wouldn't take the chance of sacrificing my child's education on the alter of 'helping the state school system.' I'm a selfish c_nt and I put my own child's education before those of other children.

Anyways. Everyone enjoy your Wine. The government are gunning for the whole public sector. You have fun times ahead. Many many strike days over the coming years, and a chance to build solidarity with the nurses and council staff. You have a battle ahead, and the press will try to drive a wedge between you and the public at large. Good luck, folks. Regardless of my own opinions.

"The for bed." Said Zebedee.

Philoslothy · 17/07/2015 23:37

I used to moan about teachers and their long holidays. I then became a teacher precisely because I wanted 12 weeks a year off. It was great. I have it even better now, I am a SAHM and so I have my whole life off.

MurielWoods · 17/07/2015 23:37

OP, my best friend is a teacher. She works part-time or at least that is what her contract says and she only receives part-time pay.

But guess what? Even though she stops 'teaching' each day at lunchtime, it's easily 4.30 - 5.00pm by the time she gets away as she has a few hours extra work each day taken up by planning, report writing, assessments, endless bloody paperwork.

Not to mention the staff meeting and parents evenings and extra work for day trips, plays, display boards etc - all of this is done in her own time.

Oh and then there are the little bits and pieces that she buys for the children out of her own pocket because there are simply not enough funds in the school purse to cover it and she knows that the children will benefit from these extra resources.

There is a reason why I am not a teacher.

She deserves every single sodding off over the summer and I intend to take her out, treat her to so,e lonely things and get her drunk.

tilliebob · 17/07/2015 23:40

Ah Muriel - your mate sounds like me. I officially work and get paid for 3 days a week - ha ha! I took the position to get out of full time teaching thinking it would be less stressful. After newly a quarter of a century in this game you'd think I'd have realised - there are no cushy numbers!

tilliebob · 17/07/2015 23:41

CultureSucksDownWords · 17/07/2015 23:48

I'm not selfless Ellie, and I'm in the fortunate position of being confident that my DS will do just fine in pretty much all of the available state schools where I live. With the back up position of home ed should this turn out not to be the case. I'd rather get involved in my local school and community if I can, and help, rather than avoid, the state school system.

Bear in mind that I chose to be a state school teacher, so I am going to be interested in the education of other people's children!

Pipbin · 17/07/2015 23:50

Another thing OP, I'm sure you sometimes mention things saying how happy you are that it's the weekend. Remember that most teachers won't get a full weekend off during term time.

Sorry had to log off as been catching up on work at home this evening. Ok so you all work most evenings until 11pm, every weekend and at least 2 weeks of the holidays. I am sorry but I just don't believe that is the case and I think this is what really riles people. I get you can't choose your holidays etc etc but just enjoy them gracefully without the displays of martyrdom and I believe you will be less vilified.

OP posts:
barbecue · 17/07/2015 23:58

Teachers deserve every second of their holiday and will probably be working a fair bit of the time preparing for next term. The people who don't understand are always those who've never tried teaching themselves.
