Washing hands after nappy change - MIL thread, sorry

My PIL are staying with us at the moment to look after DS, after I have had an operation. I appreciate is is very generous and lovely of them, and I am grateful.

However, MIL isn't washing her hands after pooey nappy changes. AIBU to be bothered by this? How can I get her to do this without basically implying she's being disgusting? We do have hand sanitizer at the nappy change station, but I found she as using that BEFORE she changed his nappy instead of after! DS is 8 months old, just for info, and my operation means I can't lift or carry him, or bend over/ kneel down, so I can't do it myself at the moment.

If all that handwashing is too much for you 001, why don't you start with this one

In contact with toiletty things - including washing before, during and after nappy changes, and my own toileting, then I'd be about 20 times a day

GoodbyeToAllOfThat · 17/07/2015 14:03

That seems like overkill to me, I don't think anyone could convince me to wash my hands before changing a nappy. That said, my kids are well out of nappies.

HarryTheDirtyDog · 17/07/2015 14:07

People who have to change nappies, prepare food, or be out and about a lot end up washing their hands more than people who don't. That's life.

Unfortunately there's no upper limit on the number of times it's reasonable to wash your hands IF you are doing lots of things that individually need it.

Reastie · 17/07/2015 15:04
Shock

^ this is my face reading this thread with all the non hand washers. I assumed everyone did.

Jo4040 · 17/07/2015 15:04

Ffs 0101. Just wash your hands when you can. If you don't want to DONT. It really is your decision.

Try not to be cocky about it tho bcz your sounding very silly. I know you don't think your sounding silly tho.

LadylikeCough · 17/07/2015 15:48

Bloody hell, 001. You've been on here for fifteen pages straight, and you still can't stop; it's like you're Mumsnet's PR rep for the norovirus.

'Wash your hands after a shitty nappy' --> 'oh, so we're supposed to wash BEFORE and DURING and AFTER nappy changes, and then DISINFECT OUR HOUSES and BOIL OUR SHOES and go LADY MACBETH on EVERY SINGLE TINY SPECK OF DIRT'.

Contact with excrement, baby/beast/adult/undetermined? Wash your fecking hands after! Why is this complicated? There are many degrees of cleanliness after this, but surely crap is the baseline? What basic hygiene tip do we need to debate next: don't shit where you eat, don't piss into the wind?

So glad I don't eat homemade cakes... just for this reason

A few people have mentioned this, not sure why is relevant as surely people always hand wash (with anti-bac) before any food prep anyway, regardless if they didn't previously do it after a nappy change.

00100001 · 17/07/2015 16:09

I can post for fifteen pages on an internet forum if I like... There's no internet police you know.

What makes you think that a billion other "micro biologists" saying stuff on a forum will make me anything different. Who's to say they're micro-bioologists? What even makes you think I'm telling the truth about not washing my hands after nappies? hmm?

00100001 · 17/07/2015 16:10

how do you even know if I've ever changed a nappy in my entire life?

Sootgremlin · 17/07/2015 16:11

ladylikecough but surely crap is the baseline Grin

Strongly agree

GoodbyeToAllOfThat · 17/07/2015 16:15

Oh dear. All we can do is take your word for it, 001.

LadylikeCough · 17/07/2015 16:32

Now, come on, 001. I can just about deal with the idea that half the population has shitty hands. But people misrepresenting themselves on the internet, just to provoke argument? Humanity is doomed.

Sootgremlin · 17/07/2015 16:55

I think the thing is that we don't trust those people who feel they don't need to wash them after handling poo to suddenly get all hygienic in the kitchen, jayne35

Jo4040 · 17/07/2015 17:19

OK. Question. If you walked to your front door, looked down at the door step and there was a nappy wrapped up. No visible poo on the outside but just a very strong smell coming from it. You pick it up, put it in the bin.

Would you wash your hands? Because after all..you habnt touched any actual crap.

SophiePendragon · 17/07/2015 17:40

I think people should stop engaging with 1000111000010010 because he or she is clearly enjoying winding people up.

I hate posters like that.

Ha some replies made me laugh!!! Poo is poo but baby poo pretty mild stuff.

We wash our hands after most changes, though I have to admit with a baby on 1 arm and a toddler in tow it's often a only a quick splash under cold water (the hot tap takes ages to come through and we're on a water metre) often with no soap . . . .hmmm . . prob not worth it in retrospect!

Jo4040 · 17/07/2015 18:27

I agree that baby poo is mild. When my baby was a new born I was once doing his nappyband my MIL was heaving. My FIL responded very sharply. For fuck sake Barbra, its a bit of dried up baby milk. Lmao

GoodbyeToAllOfThat · 17/07/2015 18:39

Breastfed baby poo is pretty mild, once they're on food it's just as vile as the adult version.

HaveIGotViewsForYou · 17/07/2015 19:31

I don't eat home-made cupcakes etc, except MIL's, because I don't trust other people's standards of cleanliness.

I am more revolted by pets though than I am people who don't wash after nappy changes - dogs and cats lick their pooey anuses, and their genitals, then lick their fur = fur is always covered in piss and poo - worse that it is not our own species. Utterly gross - and then people pat and stroke them. And have them in their bed??? ShockShock Very dirty, and I do judge people who have pets as having low standards of hygiene.

Cherryblossomsinspring · 17/07/2015 19:40

Just eat the f $#&ing cupcakes all you princesses. They've been baked in the oven! You are welcome to decline them if handed over by hand from a person who just changed a nappy and didn't wash their hands.

SophiePendragon · 17/07/2015 19:55

I don't think baby poo is as innocent as you might think. Some very high proportion of babies carry clostridium (C-diff) bacteria in their poo - not sure how this is affected by method of feeding - so while I agree it smells lovely when they are EBF it doesn't mean it's safe on your hands/handling food etc

Also I was told by a visiting HV when ds3 was born to wash my hands before and after going to the toilet and to be very careful with nappy changes as they had had quite a few women very ill with infections and they thought it was probably to do with nappy changing and hand hygiene.

It never got more specific than that but this was in 2013. No idea what she was on about - I think it is best to be cautious though.

TheDowagerCuntess · 17/07/2015 21:02

Surely, if this thread has proved anything, it's that a surprisingly high prorportion of people don't think hand-washing is even necessary.

I presume that most of you don't use cash then... It is covered in all sorts sadly.
