She is amazing. Her speech made me cry. She may be young but she talks such sense and has so much passion. If only the House of Commons contained more people like her.

Don't you have to be from glasgow to be a Glaswegian?

It was a great first speech. Not PM material but the makings of a great back bencher.

Ubik All I can do is repeat what I've already said - if Mhairi Black's party had put any effort into alieviating the problems of the poorer areas of Scotland there would likely be no need for foodbanks here. They are hypocrites of the highest order. And in excess of £10m a year for an airport that nobody wants or uses should be put to better use. Hell, they could even have used that money to give extra handouts to those they have otherwise failed to help.

It suits the SNPs agenda to not change anything for the better. That way they can blame all Scotland's problems on Westminster and increase their support for another referendum.

Well SNPs goal is to split off from the rest of the UK so.......

Sadly....they were filled with people from other countries

I'm sorry but what the hell are the commiserations in aid of?

Report
Kardamyli · 14/07/2015 21:56

Cora she's just spent 4 years at university in Glasgow, so I think that would make her a weegie.

Kardamyli · 14/07/2015 21:57

What you on about Velour Commiserations are because too many people in Scotland are too lazy to get off their backsides and work!

Report
Behooven · 14/07/2015 21:58

Is she not from Paisley?

Report
Kardamyli · 14/07/2015 22:00

I think you can still be a weegie if you're from Paisley. Any weegies about to clear up this important point? Grin

No, 4 years at glasgow uni does not make her a weegie. She is from Paisley.

SantanaLopez · 14/07/2015 22:02

You're definitely not a weegie if you're from Paisley!

Sounds a bit like you don't like the fact that people who aren't Scottish are taking up job contracts based in Scotland?
As a European immigrant I tend to bristle at that sort of sentiment :)

Also I very much doubt that a significant number of the Scottish benefit-claiming population actually don't fulfil the criteria for receiving what they do. What's your source?
I'm happy to be told I'm wrong but I just don't think that the decisions taken concerning the welfare budget are the right ones.

It was a bloody impressive speech. I don't wish she was PM because well, she's 20 and she needs some experience of life but blimey, the potential there is immense. She'll go far.

Send her to Greece. See if she can sort out their problems. Loads of money for everyone. I think she should have a bit more life experience before becoming an MP. Haven't heard her speech.

Ok I probably worded my OP badly through a haze of blubbing. Maybe a better one would be 'AIBU to hope, for all our sakes, that one day Mhairi Black will be PM?'

velour that is not what I meant at all. I am just bemoaning the fact that there are too many people in Scotland who choose not to work. It is almost impossible to get anyone decent to fill unskilled jobs in the city I work in. Everyone thinks that a starting salary of circa £18k where no qualifications of any kind are required is beneath them and they get as much for sitting at home on their fat behinds. The SNP could have done a lot over the last eight years to change that, but no it's all about independence.

I don't judge politicians too much by their speeches as they've usually had loads of help composing them.
Frankly I despair at yet another career politician in the HofC. I want to see more people with proper life experience.
BTW I'm a politics graduate from Glasgow just like her. When I was 20, I thought I had all the answers. Twenty years later, I realise I knew nothing about the problems of real people.

Very impressive speech...she may well go far, but time will tell. I am no supporter of the SNP but we do need an effective opposition - a good start I would say.

Just out of interest, are quite a few posters who are applauding Mhairi Black from/living in countries other than Scotland? Or are you all Scottish?

Report
Hassled · 14/07/2015 22:25

I'm not Scottish. Well, some ancestry but have never lived there. I do wish I lived in Kardamyli though - one of my favourite places.

It was a great speech - no doubt she will have had help crafting it, but I was still cheering her on. Just great hearing someone standing up for the welfare state.
