To be a bit shocked that my phone is apparently sectarian?

On unlocking the phone screen this morning the home screen showed the picture of my DGD as usual, the time and date, again, all as usual, then the line "Battle of the Boyne (N. Ireland). United Kingdom. All day"

This is the first time since I got the phone in April that it's given information about the significance of any given day. I'm a bit nonplussed tbh.

how is that sectarian? serious question

How many Catholics do you know celebrate the 12th July? Though I do know a Catholic man named William. How serendipitous.

If it said No Surrender then it is sectarian

Grin Grin Grin

Taytocrisps I love your user name. I had never even heard of Taytocrisps before my first trip to Belfast last year.

I'm catholic. Raised and living in NI. My parents (both catholic) attended 12th of July parades where they lived on the lisburn Rd before i came along.

I'm still not seeing the sectarianism in it. Confused

TiredButFine · 12/07/2015 21:38

It's a uk holiday. On some systems you can select "england and wales/scotland/northern ireland" holidays. On others you get a handy reminder to avoid Southport.

UseHerName · 12/07/2015 21:41

Mwahahaha are you on orange?! Brilliant Grin

BrowersBlues · 12/07/2015 21:42

I've got a Nokia Lumia and have the same problem. Spent a couple of hours last night trying to get rid of this. The Outlook help page says you can't get rid of it as it is one of the UK holidays (can't remember the exact wording), ie, if you choose to have UK holidays displayed on your phone you get this one included. I want to have the rest of the UK holidays (especially Easter, which varies).

In the feedback box I said I would like to delete this event as it is not a holiday in England. I will send them a proper email as well.

KillmeNow · 12/07/2015 21:48

Im a Belfast born catholic and some of my happiest childhood memories are of sitting on a high windowledge at the bottom of the Shankill Road for hours waiting for and watching the 12th parades pass. Had to get there early to get the best seats.

My favourites were the Lambeg drums and I still thrill to hear a proper marching band.

I dont celebrate the 12th as such but I always keep it in mind.

Do you mean delete it off your own alerts or off the alerts that everyone on that system gets?

I love hearing a marching band.

I mean delete it off my phone specifically but other people were asking the same question on the various forums I looked at so others clearly want this too. It is possible to delete individual/specific holidays from the version of Outlook we have at work (I found out how to do that), so it should be possible to provide this facility for phones too, or Outlook on Hotmail.

Today is also a good friend's birthday, and I have that set on my phone's calendar, but Battle of the Boyne appears to take priority over that so my friend's birthday does not appear on the home screen.

Cocolepew · 12/07/2015 22:01

Can't you just ignore it Briony?
Confused or is it intermittently playing the Sash during the day?

SurlyCue · 12/07/2015 22:03

Grin @ handy reminder to avoid Southport, Tiredbutfine. I used to work for a solicitors in Southport. I'll never forget looking out into the car park at the back of the office on this day, years ago, to see a very very drunk shouty woman taking a dump by the senior partners car. [grim]

It's a 2day public holiday in NI. I'm not sectarian but I love getting 2 days off in July.

Your phone was just telling you not to contact NI until Wednesday Doctor. They're closed.Grin
