To be shocked that incontinence is ignored under PIP

I have urinary incontinence to the point that I wear nappy like pads all the time. I still have accidents and if I am away from home for long, carry spare clothing as accidents are not uncommon. However under PIP, this is totally irrelevant.

Probably not the right place , but having read the distressing situation people are going though, I just thought I would add a little of my own personal problem,
Clearly polaticians do not have a clue about real life and problems that people suffer and how they affect their lives,
I had bowl cancer, 60 sessions of chemo, 30 of radio theraphy, surgery to remove the cancer and alarge part of my bowl, then had a stoma, after one year they said the could reverse the stoma and reconnect my bowl, like most people I said yes, BIG BIG MISTAKE, after they reconected me I had no abolity to control my movements, on top of this i became incontinent in the other department as well, But the worst thing is you have no life, friends that used to come no longer come, no one wants to take you any where, and now my benefits will stop under the new pip rules,
could some one tell me how I can go out any where, oh I see I can get the bus, on a good day I only go to the toilet 6 to 8 times on a bad day at least 30, pads which i of course wear all the time and have to pay for as they are not available on prescription, are no use at all if i empty completely, iT COMES OUT THE SIDES AND UP YOUR BACK, Sorry to be so descriptive, I know every toilet within a 50 mile radius of my home I have to, if You do ever manage to get out, then you get grief if you use a disabled toilet , why because you can walk, frankly if i got my arse out and washed in the sink, I'm sure I would be ejected from any supermarket toilet, the majority of which only have one cubicle, where am I going with this ?. well now i will be car less so can never leave my home, oh sorry I will also lose my dla, so I will lose my home as well, not that I ever had any help towards my housing cost, I did not, amI bitter, hell yes, after working all my life paying into the system for ever until I got Cancer, it took 6 months before they would even give me the benefit they gave me, I had the bailiffs at my door so many times I lost count, and now , it seems with these new pip rules, I will not actually get any thing, because in the eyes og our blessed government it is ok to shit my self on the bus on the way to work for the really kind person that will give me a job, every day i used to wake up and think what is life about, but at least I COULD GO PLACES , is it any wonder so many people kill them selves after this pip thing destroyed ther lives,
I can fully understand why ,
I hate my life now, in a few more weeks , oh well, such is life, Sadly iItruly hope every --- politition that agreed with this gets my problem,
then may be they will realise what real people are about,
god bless you all

It does NOT include help changing or washing bedding as that is not part of the assesssment and does not appear in any of the descriptors. It also does not include help with washing or changing clothing after accidents - the ability to wash yourself, dress/undress is assessed elsewhere. Let's be clear, PIP is hugely difficult to claim successfully and any Incontinence needs will be ignored unless you need specific help with one of the following:

Using pads to cope with Incontinence
Help with either changing pads or specific help if you cannot manage physically to cope with catheterisation, stoma care or changing bags associated with colostomy/urostomy. You may also get points for help if you have to manually evacuate your bowels or use enemas, but this will only be allowed if you can prove you cannot physically do this on your own. I have seen an instance where a woman paralysed below the waist and in a wheelchair was refused any points for Incontinence despite having a colostomy and a urostomy. She was judged as being able to manage them herself. You have been warned.

I don't really understand what you mean because if you use a power chair it means you have little or no walking ability and will qualify for enhanced rate mobility component. To be eligible for a powerchair from council wheelchair services you have to be virtually unable to walk, so your comment doesn't really make any sense. The info from benefits and work on what constitutes an aid or appliance is meant to help the claim by clarifying what SHOULD score points at the assessment, and by and large, if you need an aid or appliance to complete any activity it should score 2 points. It is possible to achieve the standard rate of care (8 points) by aids and appliances alone.

This is completely wrong. Wheelchair use is not part of the mobility test for PIP and it doesn't matter how far you can travel in a wheelchair, if you cannot walk you WILL qualify for higher rate mobility allowance. The test descriptor for mobility under PIP reads 'stand and then move' and goes on to assess using descriptors for how far a claimant can walk. If you are confined to a wheelchair and cannot walk at all, you will qualify for higher rate, if you have two artificial legs it doesn't matter if you can walk ten miles, you will still qualify for the higher rate as you cannot put two natural feet on the floor in order to stand and walk. I think maybe you are confusing PIP with ESA. ESA still uses 50m as the test but since it assesses your ability to work, it looks at whether you can 'mobilise' not 'walk' and so if you can travel more than 50m in a wheelchair you will not qualify for the support group on that descriptor - however, ESA cannot take away your entitlement to motability, only PIP can do that. Hope this clarifies things a bit.

No it doesn't. You have to be able to cook a meal from fresh ingredients. Simply using microwave ready meals does not count.

Wow this is terrible that they are refusing people. They measured my scar once in an assessment. I thought wtf has that got to do with mobility.

brasty · 31/10/2016 18:54

I got zero for incontinence. You do not get 8 points for incontinence. You can get 8 points if you need someone to take you to the toilet, wipe your bum and put pads in for you. A lot more than incontinence.

brasty · 31/10/2016 18:56

I get pads from the NHS to cope with incontinence, I still got zero points. I should have got 1 point for that. The fact I still have accidents at time and thus have to wash clothing a lot more, means nothing.
