To find the term 'unmumsnetty hug' absurdly irritating?

  1. It is used with such frequency that said hug cannot, by definition, be 'unmumsnetty'
  1. It's just so ANNOYING! Why not just say 'sending you a hug'?!

Rant over. I feel better already.

'Clique' may derive either from an old French word meaning 'latch' or from ... Click. Grin Shall we just bugger off to pedants' corner?

Zucker · 09/07/2015 00:56

Mumsnetters are tough, stiff upper lip, punch in the shoulder, attagirl type posters.

Hugs aren't the done thing round these parts so we need some unmumsnetty hugs sometimes.

RonaldMcDonald · 09/07/2015 01:02

Hug is for serious. stuff. only

All else is fakery or frippery and must be discouraged

RonaldMcDonald · 09/07/2015 01:04

Lolling at clicks

basicbitch · 09/07/2015 01:18

Yeah it's weird - what's the issue with hugs here? It's like some strange in group taboo. OP YANBU

basicbitch · 09/07/2015 01:22

tiny Grin

ShadowsCollideCantLogInToMN · 09/07/2015 01:53

'I can spell a word any way I wish for whatever reason I wish'. Indeed you can crusts, but spelling a word however you wish doesn't mean that your own personal spelling of that word somehow becomes correct. Or that you can change the meaning of words. Click and clique actually have different meanings.

Grin at 'are you a pendant'

RhiWrites · 09/07/2015 02:27

Wasn't it Humpty Dumpty who said "when I use a word it means what I choose it to mean"?

Twasthecatthatdidit · 09/07/2015 08:05

Bit off topic but - do people actually pronounce clique "click"? Have I been unknowingly pretentious all these years I've pronounced it "cleek"?

IvyWall · 09/07/2015 08:16

Cleek. dictionary.cambridge.org/pronunciation/british/clique

Sparklingbrook · 09/07/2015 08:17

I always thought it was pronounced cleek. You hear about people being 'clicky' but that's not dissimilar to 'cliquey' I guess.

In-jokes are probably what I like best about MN. Sorry.

Unmumsnetty hugs - well, because we're all as hard as steel, innit? Unlike the other lot. I agree it's possibly overused, but then so are most in-jokes.

WoonerismSpit · 09/07/2015 09:34

are you a pendant?

Haha, please tell me that was intentional.

Nice attempt at trying to cover your mistake though Wink

ErrolTheDragon · 13/07/2015 11:47

'Pendant' is one of the ways in which Muphry's Law frequently strikes on MN. Grin

Sighing · 13/07/2015 11:54

I've seen these unmumsnetty hugs on posts since 2009. Reality is not friends with most internet forums Smile
