To allow DH to continue in his disillusionment

He has quite bad hayfever and I recommended he eat local honey. My parents gave him a jar of honey from their road (35 miles away). I have since read more and believe there is no benefit. Fine, except DH is convinced it's working and is very happy eating honey regularly now. He appears to be experiencing a placebo effect. I have therefore said nothing about my further reading on the subject and am allowing him to continue benefitting from the placebo. AIBU to conceal the truth in order for the placebo to continue working?

It might be working for him though Confused

Gozogozo · 08/07/2015 09:28

YANBU.

The misery of hayfever is awful. If his power of mind is so great, thank heavens for that!

Lancelottie · 08/07/2015 09:29

Depends how much honey he's eating! If it's a teaspoon a day, leave him happily deluded (after all, he could google it himself if he's bothered). If it's the whole pot, maybe not.

ladymalfoy · 08/07/2015 09:29

YANBU. It's awful this year.
How are you coping with your hay fever?

Wittynewnameifonly · 08/07/2015 09:33

YANBU - the placebo effect is medically proven. Whether it is the actual or placebo effect helping, the fact is he is feeling better so I'd leave him to it.

MrsAukerman · 08/07/2015 09:38

He has a piece of toast with honey on before his cereal now. I think I'll leave him be on the basis that honey's actually quite good for you anyway so no harm. Good point from pp that he could Google if he wanted to.

YANBU. I'd kill for an effective placebo right now!

BathtimeFunkster · 08/07/2015 09:39

Well it seems to be working for him, so there's nothing to tell really.

MrsAukerman · 08/07/2015 09:40

Well until you read this thread I could have recommended local honey!

ShadowFire · 08/07/2015 09:40

YANBU, as long as he's not eating ridiculous amounts of the stuff.

DMCWelshCakes · 08/07/2015 09:40

As long as he doesn't then go about evangelising about it to the rest of us that's fine!

(I find a fist in the face often offends. Grin)

Slopes off to take even more antihistamines...

Goshthatsspicy · 08/07/2015 09:43

I don't understand, are you just giving him Gales?

LaChatte · 08/07/2015 09:45

In any case honey is very good for you, with the added benefit of a placebo effect, I'd say it's a win-win situation.

DragonWithAGirlTattoo · 08/07/2015 10:03

well something is working for him, does it really matter if its really the honey or a placebo

i think YABU - and a bit mean/smug of you to say "oh, look i'm so clever, i can use google and you're doing it wrong'

HippyDippyRidingPretty · 08/07/2015 10:05

He should drink nettle tea, it's a natural antihistamine. You can buy it in food shops but I make my own as I feel it's more effective.

ExcuseMyEyebrows · 08/07/2015 10:21

DBil has been taking probiotics for several months (just because he likes those little drinks) and hasn't suffered from hayfever this year at all - he's normally quite bad so he's delighted with his accidental 'cure'

SooticaTheWitchesCat · 08/07/2015 10:24

Don't say anything to him, if it is working for him, even if only because he believes it, then that's good.

WorldsBiggestGrotbag · 08/07/2015 10:27

Why does it matter if it's a placebo effect or an actual cure, as long as he feels better?

Itllbefiiiiiiiiine · 08/07/2015 10:27

It worked for me.

SoupDragon · 08/07/2015 10:28

Why would you be so mean as to try and ruin something that is helping your DH?

JinglyJanglyJungleBigGameTours · 08/07/2015 10:30

It worked for me too actually though it was tricky to find actual local honey. I haven't been doing it this year though and I'm suffering really badly with hayfever at the moment, the usual antihistamines aren't cutting it.

SoupDragon · 08/07/2015 10:30

I have since read more and believe there is no benefit.
AIBU to conceal the truth

It's not the truth is it - just what you believe having googled stuff.

AlpacaLypse · 08/07/2015 10:34

We all know better than to trust Google to diagnose ourselves (at least I hope we do!) So why should we trust it about this?

Leave him to enjoy his honey in peace Smile

SayThisOnlyOnce · 08/07/2015 10:37

I thought the local honey had to be from bees one mile or closer to where you live/work/sneeze.

As long as your parents honey isn't stupidly priced I'd keep schtum.

Lateswim16 · 08/07/2015 10:46

So you have googled? Wow op you are a scientist. Do you read the daily mail and believe everything in that too?

If it's working for your dh it's working so he's actually right and you are wrong.

You do realise there's just opinions and not scientific fact on tinternet? No? Wink
