That Wimbeldon ball boys/girls are exploited and treat like shit

I don't think they should be expected to pass towels to players after each point and when the player wipes the sweat off his face and walks around the court, have to face the player and walk backwards, waiting to be thrown the sweat soaked towel, sometimes viscously at their face. One ball girl was in tears yesterday after being yelled after by Novak-Djokovic. Can't be right surely.

Towel slaves. Grin

He should apologise, no doubt.

thatsn0tmyname · 08/07/2015 08:13

Back in the day the ball boys were selected from Barnardos homes as a treat. Can't be that bad?

ilovesooty · 08/07/2015 08:15

So that would be a "no" to my question then.

AgentProvocateur · 08/07/2015 08:15

"Towel slaves"!!GrinGrin

Get a grip, OP. No-one is forcing them to do it. (I'm still not sure if this thread is a piss take...)

Icimoi · 08/07/2015 08:17

OP, if the players went to fetch the towels it would really slow matches down, and provide opportunities for gamesmanship. I note that ball boys are allowed to have drinks on court, I imagine they could take wipes on if they want to.

BringMeTea · 08/07/2015 08:18

Don't talk wet (towels) OP.

Roussette · 08/07/2015 08:19

This is obviously a wind up, has to be. Most ridiculous thing I've ever heard on MN. Just had to tell my tennis mad now grown up DD, she's just choked on her coffee at work. I think we need to start a thread on possible trauma to DCs who laugh too much at MN threads whilst drinking coffee Grin

00100001 · 08/07/2015 08:19

I suggest OP contacts Wimbledon with her new safety and hygiene measures, and protection of children in the workplace concerns.... and see what happens!

margo sorry I know you weren't implying slavery, but OP was!

OP - SHAME ON YOU for comparing BBGs with ACTUAL REAL LIFE SLAVES.

Inkanta · 08/07/2015 08:19

Yep - towel slaves! Yes I'm calling them towel slaves and sticking with it. Grin

I'm at work now. Bye for now.

Sparklingbrook · 08/07/2015 08:21

If I am really bored later I might have to watch a bit of Wimbledon to see the towel slaves in action.

Inkanta · 08/07/2015 08:22

'OP - SHAME ON YOU for comparing BBGs with ACTUAL REAL LIFE SLAVES.'

Oh give over with the moral high ground angle!

they are volunteers.
often sporty kids used to being coached, often at high levels where a certain grit and resilience is needed

kids too molly coddled iMO

Tanith · 08/07/2015 08:23

I haven't forgotten the way that Victor Troicki once treated that poor ball boy in the French Open, so I'm very glad that Wimbledon have taken action over the shouting incident.

It isn't just the attitude they show. It's the fact that this is in front of everyone. I'd hate to think of my own child humiliated in front of the spectators and cameras of the world. None of you would like it yourselves and these are children.

FrankietheSquealer · 08/07/2015 08:26

a lot of us are used to some robust discipline on sports fields though.
Maybe its parents of non sporty kid who find it harder?

I allow other adults to coach and ( if necc) reprimand my children

00100001 · 08/07/2015 08:26

Maybe you should take your own advice OP??? Grin

ilovesooty · 08/07/2015 08:26

If you didn't want people to express opinion of your definition of slavery why post?

whois · 08/07/2015 08:28

He shouted 'towel'. He didn't shout 'bring me a towel now you useless piece of shit'. Towel should have already been there anyway.

I'm more concerned that the ball kids are missing two weeks of school - in the current age of attendance fines!

Nromanoff · 08/07/2015 08:28

Yeah op, tell people to give over with the moral high ground while you are banging on about this.

You clearly know nothing about what they do or how it's organised.

FrankietheSquealer · 08/07/2015 08:31

it would be down as ' approved sporting activity'

ilovesooty · 08/07/2015 08:32

Or work experience.

00100001 · 08/07/2015 08:33

Or "it's Wimbledon baby!" I suspect the absence code would W Grin

mrsdavidbowie · 08/07/2015 08:35

who is exactly.

theconstantvacuumer · 08/07/2015 08:36

Djokovic: "TOWEL!!!!!"
Ball girl: "Did you mean to be so rude?".

FrankietheSquealer · 08/07/2015 08:39

i fricken hate that expression

So arse tighteningly wank

BMW6 · 08/07/2015 08:41

OP if you are serious you are being idiotic. Here's a grip for you to get hold of.
