To have felt sad about this

I work on Sunday mornings and I stopped at the BP garage to get petrol, it is one of those big supermarkets/subway stations as well as petrol.

There was a woman and toddler and I couldn't believe what she was buying, bear in mind this was before 8 on a Sunday. 3 packets of haring, a big cinema style packet of crisps and chocolate and a 2 litre bottle of Pepsi.

Both mum and daughter were obese, the little girl was only 3 or so.

I just felt sad, that little girl should have been enjoying a healthy breakfast instead of being am dragged out. The mum obviously had an addiction.

Honestly, mumsnet would have you believe that 99% of obesity is medication related!

^^ applaud

i see im not the only one tired of ye olde excuse machine

sometimes people are rude "because they are" and they don't have hidden disabilities

sometimes people are obese because they eat shite

Sparklingbrook · 05/07/2015 12:49

Obviously all that junk isn't good, but maybe it was just a one-off. Would you have had the same thoughts if they hadn't been overweight? Plus I'm guessing you don't see them regularly, so it's probably not something they do every Sunday.

When I was at school (not that long ago, I'm in my 20s now) a lot of the other kids brought in big bags of crisps and flasks of coke with their lunch, chocolate for break time etc. Packet of sweets on the way home. The school dinners were all deep-fried crap and most people had chips with their tea at least half the week. Very few kids were fat. Obviously if they carried these habits into adulthood it might explain why my generation is so overweight now, but we certainly weren't as young children, at least not where I grew up. We did play outdoors most days though. Classes full of fat kids are a very recent phenomenon; kids eating masses of junk, not so much. I blame our culture of keeping children indoors on their Xboxes, bored and surrounded by junk food, more than I blame the junk food itself.

Sorry, went a bit off-topic there Blush

Not the case at all. Just reminding some of you more spiteful, judgy biddies that sometimes it's the case and think before you open your mouths and judge. You have no idea what your comments do to others, how horrible they make people feel, how sad, how hurt and what the consequences of said comments could be.

AnyoneForTennis · 05/07/2015 14:08

I'm more worried about the consequences ofeating crap and feeding it to kids tbh. To the point of obesity. Those are consequences which can kill.

Olddear · 05/07/2015 15:53

A one off? They didn't get obese on fresh air.

YUDOTHIS · 05/07/2015 16:09

Hahaha. I get judged all the time when I'm eating anything less than a fucking salad in public. Little do people know I have a thyroid issue that means my weight goes up and down like no mans business and it is no mans business the only way I can shift it and keep it off is to go on the diet attached (please DO NOT attempt this diet unless you know what you're doing and are of sound mind, It IS dangerous and can kick off an eating disorder) and then once finished add 200-300 calories to each day and then literally live on this diet. Sometimes I just need a break and that break makes me balloon to a size 18+. Pull your judgey knickers out of your arse crack and stop staring and going "i judge fat/skinny people when they buy unhealthy foods" Well yes, I'm sure you're so perfect that you can afford to eat nothing but fresh grown fruits and vegetables every single day and never crave something unhealthy but not everyone is so perfect and as proven by this post, hopefully, things aren't always what they seem and the only way some people can lose weight and keep it off is to beat their metabolism into submission which isn't easy to do.
I may seem angry and projecting here but it breaks my heart for me to see these threads :( I want to be able to have a bag of crisps with my partner when out and about without being stared at, I want to be able to occasionally eat something thats not ridiculously healthy and I want to do that without being judged, But if I'm going through one of my off diet periods (I go from an 8-14 very quickly then continue to balloon to 18 plus, not a good look when you're 5ft and a creme egg) I AM stared at, I AM ridiculed for it and its wrong. BTW, DS (5) and DD (15mon) are both healthy weights and eat a healthy diet with the occasional treat, seems to surprise some people...

Fairyliz · 05/07/2015 16:22

Yudo I do understand where you are coming from as I have an underactive thyroid so have to watch what I eat.
However as its already been said most people don't have medical problems they just overeat.
For those of you who say its non of the ops business, won't some of her taxes be used to treat this womans health problems caused by being over- weight? I am sure I read somewhere that 10% of thr NHS budget is spent on treating illnesses caused in this way and this figure is rising. We judge people for smoking so why not overeating?

YUDOTHIS · 05/07/2015 16:24

Also, before anyone says "its actually cheaper to eat healthily" yeah, it may be when you take into account a PORTION of something, I.e a box of ten (Do they even come in tens?) oxo cubes may be £2, meaning its 20p per oxo cube, But who the fuck will or can buy a single oxo cube?! We all know the cheapest foods are canned crap and bags of high carb pasta and rice, a bag of penne pasta tescos own brand is around 20p. a bag of rice is around the same and you can get processed canned stuff from around 10pence a can- All high in stuff that isn't good for you.
a bag of mixed salad (about 2-3 meals) may "only" be 80p, But if for that you can get a big bag of value high carb rice (we'll say thats 25p) and some cheap add-water kind of sauce (starts from about 30p, tastes like crap) You'll get anything up to 10 meals, which will you choose? when DP and I first moved in together with DS (DS isn't his, you gonna judge me for that too?) we had an income of 1000 a month and rent of 450 of month, DP (Skinny as anything) and I had about £100 to feed us for the month, with a baby that was on formula costing £10 a week, Didn't really leave much room for us to eat healthily so me and my scrawny DP both ballooned- DP putting on 20lbs in 6 months. When i got a 2nd job alongside my apprenticeship we ate alot better and both of us lost weight, Not hard to do the math really is it.

DrankSangriaInThePark · 05/07/2015 16:28

I would judge. I also judge MNers who think they are being clever by pointing out other people's SPaG mistakes.
You really are bottom feeding when your only retort to someone is that they've spelled a word wrong.

YUDOTHIS · 05/07/2015 16:29

Fairyliz- I know not everyone is too poor to eat well or has a medical condition and I totally get that, I'm not living in a bubble where everyone is a special case however why judge, on the off chance? I also hate the notion that we can judge people because we pay taxes, for one we dont even know if the OP is a tax payer (we dont know either way) she may be, she may not be. Also, Telling people how to live because "you pay taxes" is a slippery slope IMO, Where does it end? It may start with obesity and smokers but will it end there? will you judge people for living your life in ways you wouldn't? Judge them for having a spare room we already do that judge them for having more than one child? sterilization if we get divorced after having a child/children? No tax credits for SAHM because I pay taxes, they don't and i dont want them to be a sahm (example, ive no problem with SAHM's) if we start excusing judgmental behavior because people pay taxes it will never end and some will take it to extremes.

BIWI · 05/07/2015 16:31

Well, interesting that this is the OP's first and only post on MN. Certainly goaded a lot of equally interesting replies ...

Olddear · 05/07/2015 18:35

They were buying a load of junk food and a large bottle of fizzy juice. They were both obese. Clearly, the first thing you would think is 'well, obviously they have under active thyroids or they are on some sort of medication cos it's definitely not what they're eating'

Pishedorf · 05/07/2015 19:08

sally as a fellow obesity 'specialist' (albeit working on my qualifications) I find your attitude alarming.

Part of working with patients, particularly in obesity, is to approach their issues with a non judgemental manner.

By all means, judge away in your capacity as a judgemental person, we all are capable of judging which is a horrible part of human nature. But if you judge people in your lofty position as an obesity specialist that's very wrong IMO.

Dunkyourcustardcream · 05/07/2015 19:09

Luckily there are two shops in our village, so I can alternate between what with all the crap I buy.

kali110 · 05/07/2015 19:12

My oh is a big guy. He will go to the shops and get a little cake.
You'd judge him i guess?
He hates cake. He goes shopping for me because some days i can't get out of bed.(hidden disabilitiesGrin ).
I wouldn't actually judge.
For all anyone knows they could have been going to a party!it's been a beautiful day in most places.
People get ready in the morning!
Nobody knows.

AyMamita · 05/07/2015 20:21

I'd have felt the same.

Love how everyone piles in to make excuses. Fat woman with fat child buying tons of junk food and nothing else? If it walks like a duck...

Jo4040 · 05/07/2015 20:22
