AIBU?

breastfeeding in the supermarket

Ok so I'm all for breastfeeding and think all mums should (assuming mother/baby are able to) but WALKING AROUND SAINSBURYS breastfeeding. . . Seriously? ?

Maybe it's only me that's shocked and I am not a mum myself if that makes a difference.
Don't get me wrong I certainly disagree with mums being ushered into toilets and the like but I felt a bit of modesty could have avoided awkwardness for both mum and others she may come across.

I have no issue with nudity either, i enjoy sunbathing topless and strolling around my home in various states of undress but I couldn't imagine ever feeling comfortable doing this myself

The last thing I expected on a Saturday afternoon trip to sainsburys was to round the corner of an aisle to come face to face with a woman with her top down and FULL BOOB OUT (I saw nipple and all!) strolling down the home entertainment aisle feeding baby. Yes I know this is what they are intended for but when men aren't allowed to enter shirtless is this not a bit much? Had she been sat outside the store on the benches or in a cafe (if they had one) I guess i or anyone else wouldn't have batted an eyelid

Just interested in others opinions

Is this taking things a bit far or perhaps it is just a multitasking achievement extraordinaire?

If she was feeding a tiny baby chocolate buttons, OP, then I would get my knickers in a twist. You need to stop looking if you don't like seeing mothers feeding their babies an appropriate foodstuff.

I admire the woman who had the confidence to obviously feed the baby as walking around. Well Done to Her.

I fed in supermarkets practically every time I went shopping when DD was little as she rarely went longer than 30 minutes between feeds when awake, and didn't sleep much. Nobody ever said anything. I didn't ever notice anyone staring. She was in a sling so you'd have to be staring quite hard to see much breast.

And there we have it OP she was obviously happy with her choice so where is your problem? What does it matter what others think? She was happy, you say you were not unhappy, just surprised, so where is the issue?

Pretty sure that this was me. My babies love a boob while shopping.

OP, if you look on YouTube there is a song called "Ruin your day" by Sparrow Folk, you should watch.

Jem - consider them as people mainly think this is ok so consider why I feel how I do
Who is Nigel?

Ginger - nah we don't have a clothing section!

Saul - I don't know how to format hence used caps

Starbrite - nope not shocked by lingerie models like I say it's context - m&s window regular models in lingerie, sainsburys don't generally see breastfeeding in the aisles hence surprised
I DO feel some people wear too low cut tops but again that's my opinion and I wouldn't suggest they change but would likely be surprised
Re lady in bikini being comparable I don't expect to see that in the supermarket either

Dawn again it's context and what is 'the norm' in a situation. I believe nuts etc can only show 'so much' on the cover and didn't they recently change the shelves they could be displayed on?

The only time I have been irritated by someone breastfeeding was in the supermarket.

She was feeding while paying at aldi. The cashier was putting her stuff through and placing it in her trolley as she had her hands full. Then baby got upset so we all had to wait agggesss while she got him to latch on again so she could pay.

Aldi checkouts are not a place to multitask!

So OP you've ignored everyone pointing out that if baby was feeding you wouldn't see her 'large breasts and large nipple'

"Understand how breasts are sexual, an arousal zone for women"

Breasts are sexual, but they are also there to feed a hungry child. These two issues are totally separated.

The same as a man's penis; used for peeing & used for intercourse.

Also in case you haven't noticed it's been hot this week - hard to double layer (which if you want to do it, can make it a tad easier to feed discreetly), so if baby needs feeding, people just have to accept there might be a bit of partial boobage on show.

op I think you've really been given a hard time here. I can see exactly where you are coming from. it's not so much the breastfeeding, more so that you just weren't expecting it (I've also never come across this). I'd be a bit shocked at first, but more so because I've never seen it before and I'd also wonder how it can be comfortable waking and bf and shopping. People have really turned this thread around and are bashing the op saying she is against breastfeeding and accusing her of supporting bottle feeding (which one poster called some horrible words) which I think is totally wrong. You do realise that when you are bashing bottle feeding you could be really upsetting peopke who are unable to breastfeed. Some posters really need to think before they comment.

Society has made this how it is so there's no use in bashing op. and for what it's worth... yes breast ARE sexual as well! There is a sexual feeling in them.

shitebag, I have to disagree, they were the primary use for breasts, and yes most of the time a woman who choses to have a baby will use them to breastfeed. However, I was speaking in modern terms. I don't think it is fair to say breasts are for feeding, get over it. There are many a reason why that is not applicable in today's society. Now I'm not saying they are just for sexual gratification either, I'm only trying to put out another point of view about how just getting angry and saying "why should you care op, you idiot, why should anyone feel any discomfort seeing this?".

I think if breastfeeders showed the tiniest bit of tolarance towards people who didn't instantly whooping for joy, shake your hand, or just plain ignore you for feeding 'any damn place you need to', as you expect to be shown to you, I think there wouldn't be half as much of an issue going on as there is. There needs to be more acceptance on both sides of the debate, and the grey area inbetween.

Because hopeful she is exaggerating and needs an anatomy class as she maybe confusing a bit of areola with a nipple.Grin

Oh also.... on some women you can see the nipple when a baby is feeding. not everyone has small nipples

Saul you missed out the "udders" comment.

We're just like animals when we breastfeed don't you know!

Baby wasn't in a sling nor was it currently feeding at the precise time I bumped into the mum hence I saw full breast

Re the image of a bikini yes I would be shocked if I saw her in sainsburys

Maybe she forgot to put boob away OP? I've nearly answered the door like that before!

I did a parent and child tour of an art gallery once. There was a mother on the tour who was pushing a toddler in a pram while at the same time breast feeding a new born which she was carrying with her other arm.
I was quite impressed actually although she was showing off a lot of skin. She had her too pulled up so she was bare from waist to boob on one side.
